The remote Puna district on Hawaii's eastern coast is a dramatic land of old lava flows, lush sub-tropical forest and black-sand beaches. Few travelers make it down to the Puna vacation rentals, but those who do are rewarded with bubbling natural baths, heated by the Big Island's geothermal power, scenic coastal cycling roads and some seriously good snorkeling. Try to make some time to explore the charming little town of Pahoa, stock up on local Hawaiian produce at the Maku'u Farmers' Market, or go hiking in the unworldly Lava Tree State Monument.
It's all about Puna's nature
Let's face it, you're not going to find a whole wealth of historical attractions near your Puna vacation rental, it's more about the natural wonders. That said, the Star of the Sea, a little Catholic church whose modest exterior doesn't hint at its spectacular painted interior, is well worth the drive to see. Along Hwy 130, you can get to grips with the island's geothermal power at the stream vents and craters. Alternatively, swing by the farmers' market, to mingle with the locals and bag some exotic produce or handicrafts to take back to your rental.
There's no bad time to visit Puna
The enviable weather in Hawaii is rather pleasant all year-round. The temperature rarely drops below the 70s, even in winter. That said, the dry season between April and October sees the most number of travelers coming to stay in Puna vacation rentals and the climate can get a little sticky. The rainy season runs from November through March and short daily bursts of rain are a daily occurrence. The happy medium is between these 2 seasons when, if you catch it right, you'll rarely see rain and the temperature will be at its most agreeable.

Nearby Wao Kele is one of the archipelago's largest wetland forests and teems with vines, ferns and tumbling waterfalls. If you're a nature lover, there are few places on Big Island which measure up to this paradisal place near your Puna vacation rental. While you walk through the park, you'll likely spot eagles soaring overhead, as well as spotting all manner of exotic fauna. Down along the coast, a major highlight is the pods of dolphins, which playfully swim and jump in the calm waters among huge shoals of exotic fish.
