Explore the beachside setting in Hatteras
The beaches and other outdoor surroundings create an inviting atmosphere in Hatteras. Travelers to this relaxing city praise the surfing, seafood restaurants and fishing. Whether you're planning a family vacation, friends trip or romantic retreat, HomeAway has a great selection of vacation homes. Many rentals come with a full kitchen and separate dining area, perfect if you need a space for entertaining.
A wave from the Graveyard of the Deep
What Hatteras lacks in neon-lit fairground attractions and fairy floss, it makes up for with incredible sandy beaches, fantastic fishing, and fascinating museums. The Graveyard of the Atlantic, on the southwest of the island, is a modern-built maritime museum focusing on the shipwrecks found off the Outer Banks. It has a varied collection, from old-fashioned diving helmets to curious artifacts dredged up from the deep. It's open Monday to Saturday all year round, and hosts scavenger hunts and expert talks.
Haul in a Blue Marlin like Ernest Hemingway
Bordered by hundreds of miles of roaring Atlantic Ocean and over 50 miles of sands, it will come as no surprise that Hatteras Island is a beach-lovers paradise. Book a pastel-hued Hatteras vacation rental and you're moments from rolling buttery sands, a wild surf, and an ocean full of fish. Big game fishing is a popular pastime on the island, and game fishing fanatics descend from all over the country to try and land a Blue Marlin, Hemingway-style. Fishing aside, the wild Atlantic waves are also great for surfing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing.
Hatteras is (quite) hot, hot, hot!
Hatteras Island has a humid subtropical climate, which is generally mild throughout the year, but spring and summer bring the rain. The most popular time to visit is in summer, when temperatures reach highs of 70°F and 80°F. It's worth booking Hatteras vacation rentals well in advance, as summer is the island's peak season. The shoulder seasons of April and May, or September and October, still attract a solid weekend crowd. For many, winter is the nicest time to visit, when the crowds have gone and you get the beaches all to yourself.
