Milos—it's the best place you've never heard of

Whisper it lightly, but Milos may just be Greece's best kept secret. Halfway between Crete and the Greek mainland, this sparsely populated island is known for its quaint Cycladic-style villages, crystal clear waters and lunar-like landscapes. Take in a show, Ancient Greek-style, in Milos

Like much of Greece, you only need to walk so far before you come across some history. One of the island's most popular attractions is the Catacombs, set near the village of Tripiti. Built in the 1st century A.D., these 3 burial chambers weren't discovered until 1844, and are among the old oldest Christian catacombs in existence. If that's not old enough for you, then head to the nearby Ancient Theather ruins, which dates back over 2,000 years. Down by the coast, you can check out the old Sulfur Mines at Paliorema, which lie next to an attractive beach.

Beaches, beaches, and, you guessed it, more beaches

Milos has dozens of beaches (more than any other Cycladic Island), so you'll never be short of places to soak up some rays. The porous white rocks of Sarakiniko beach, which give it a moon-like quality, contrast with the crystaline waters and provides a stunning backdrop. The equally spectacular Kleftiko Beach, with its many white sea stacks and caves, is also worth a visit (although it can only be reached by boat). In Adamas, in the center of the island, you'll find many bars, restaurants, and shops, as well as a naturally made harbor, from where you can take day excursions.

There's never really a bad time to visit Milos. Its Mediterranean climate means it experiences mild winters and warm dry summers. In July and August, temperatures push into the high 80s, while in the cooler fall months of September and October, you can still expect highs in the mid 70s. Even in December, it gets into 60s. Milos tends to stay pretty dry most of the year, although may experience intermittent showers in winter. Since the summer months tend to be the most popular for travelers, you'll find cheaper Milos vacation rentals in spring and fall.

Milos is part of the Cyclades Islands in the Aegean Sea. Its volcanic origins have shaped it, and given it its unique horseshoe shape. Due its volcanic geology, Milos has many impressive sea caves to play pirate in. There are some really great sea caves at Papafrangas and Sykia, although the best examples may be at the imposing cliffs of Kleftiko, on the south of the island.
