San Leandro oozes suburban charm
San Leandro isn't just the gateway to the departure halls of the Oakland International Airport. It's also a pretty little section of the San Francisco Bay Area, known for its verdant recreational spaces, long history, quaint lighthouses, squiggling bicycle lanes, and down-to-earth suburban character. With great connections to downtown Oakland, beautiful views over Heron Bay, and oodles of classy San Leandro vacation rentals on the line up, it might just be hard to refuse a stint in this intriguing corner of Northern California.
Birds and biking in San Leandro
San Leandro might not have the world-famous attractions of its big brother across the San Francisco Bay, but it does have its own share of cerebral, off-beat draws. Make a beeline straight for the Oyster Bay Shoreline to watch as hulking airplanes descend onto the runways of Oakland International Airport, or to join the Bay Trail as it weaves south from Oakland central. Meanwhile, biking paths extend all the way from the heart of the town to the Lake Chabot Regional Park, and Oakland Zoo is just a stone's throw from the city with its swinging chimps and hulking African elephants.
Rest and recreation in San Leandro
It's all about chilled living and enjoying the suburban character of the San Francisco Bay Area in San Leandro, which is precisely why most travelers here will find themselves enjoying long days of bird watching on the edge of the Pacific coast, hiking local reserves, boating on nearby lakes, or simply flitting between the quaint teahouses of the central streets. Festivals also sometimes pop up in earnest, from the Vietnamese New Year in winter to the Cherry Festival that matches with the fruit harvest in June.
San Leandro is the gateway to the East Bay region
Nestled just south of Oakland city and right next to Oakland International Airport, there's arguably nowhere that fits the bill of the gateway to the East Bay region better than San Leandro. Of course, that brings the wetland stretches of the Oyster Shoreline and the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge to the fore, but also the rising hills of the Anthony Chabot Regional Park. Those gradually turn from bucolic sylvan valleys to rugged, serrated peaks over on the Las Trampas Wilderness, hosting vultures, waterfalls, and bull pastures.
