Stay in a Canyon Lake Cabin or Retreat

Canyon Lake is halfway between San Antonio and Austin, Texas, in the middle of the rolling Texas hill country. The lake has 80 miles of shoreline and covers over 8,000 acres. You can have lakefront views from a spacious home or lodge with all the amenities. Cabins and even heated Tipis are available for the more adventurous.

Boating

Canyon Lake is large enough to support two marinas, and there are 23 boat ramps spaced along the lake.

Swimming

The lake is over 900 feet deep and there are lots of beaches and other swimming areas around it. The Guadalupe River is a popular site for tubing, with long lazy currents and few rapids in the tubing area.

Fishing

Guadalupe Park has a public fishing pier, and fish in the lake include several types of bass, catfish and crappie.

Hiking

The hilly landscape gives you a moderate workout, and there are several trails to navigate while breathing the clean, fresh lake air. The top of the Canyon Lake Dam is a great place to walk or run, and it has a breathtaking view of the lake.

Nature Watching

Canyon Lake is home to an abundance of wildlife including foxes, white-tailed deer and armadillos. There are several parks around the lake, and many of them are the starting points for hiking trails that wind through the habitats of local wildlife.

Canyon Lake Gorge

On the other side of the dam, the Canyon Lake Gorge features waterfalls, lagoons and natural springs.

Local Area

Nearby San Marcos is home to Rio Vista Falls with its three drop-offs for exciting kayaking. Canyon Lake is also less than an hour's drive from Austin, Texas, which is known for its beautiful natural grottos, springs and caverns.

This is one of the favorite lakeside restaurants for visitors. Affordable Italian food and local fresh seafood is complimented by luscious desserts like cannoli and chocolate layer cake.

Las Barcas

This Tex-Mex restaurant features Mexican soft drinks and all the usual Mexican specialty dishes. Las Barcas also has a complete breakfast menu.

San Antonio Nightlife

The lake is less than an hour's drive from this cosmopolitan Texas city of over a million residents. San Antonio is the place where you can find a thriving nightlife and music scene.

Shopping and Museums

Tanger Outlet Stores

The Tanger Outlet Mall is 34 miles away in San Marcos with dozens of shops offering everything from children's toys to upscale clothing and housewares.

Heritage Museum

The Heritage Museum of the Texas Hill Country has a collection of dinosaur track fossils found in the area around the lake. There are also exhibits of Native American artifacts and a geology display with more fossils.

Weather

July and August are great months for swimming and boating with temperatures reaching the low nineties. During the spring and autumn, the weather is pleasant and temperatures are mostly in the sixties and seventies. Winters are mild, rarely reaching the low forties. Canyon Lake gets slightly less rainfall than the national average, and there is no rainy season.

How to Get There

The closest major airport is in San Antonio, an hour away from Canyon Lake. Rental cars and taxis or shuttles are available. From the San Antonio International Airport (SAT), take US-281 N via McAllister Freeway. Take a slight right onto TX-46 and turn left onto FM-3159/Smithson Valley Road; then follow the signs to Canyon Lake. The lake can also be reached by TX-46 E from I-10 or TX-46 W from I-35 if traveling by automobile.
