Good Family Time in the Painted Hills!

            5 of 5
My sister and I treated our parents to a Father's Day weekend in Mitchell. The Sunset Cottage was a perfect base for our Painted Hills mini vacation. Mitchell is a very small town and the cottage was easy to find. The wood stove was perfect to take the chill off during our first rainy day there. The sun came out for our second day and we thoroughly enjoyed sitting on the back deck with wine and music. We came prepared with plenty of food as we knew that grocery stores were limited in the area, however, we did make daily trips to the small store in Mitchell and appreciated the friendliness of everyone we encountered. We would not hesitate to return to the Sunset Cottage in the future.

            The Perfect Cozy Cottage

            5 of 5
During our visit to the Painted Hills region of Oregon we stayed in the Hollyhock Cottage. This was a wonderful treat and a place full of surprises. The cottage is very comfortable and had the best supplied kitchen of any place I have ever stayed, that included a kitchen. You will not want for anything. The farm fresh eggs were a real treat as well. There are plenty of towels too. The gardens around the cottage are incredible and a delight to explore. It does take some getting used to not having cell phone service out in Mitchell, or the surrounding areas, but the cottage does have an extensive DVD library. There were probably 100 DVDs to pick from. There is Wi-Fi, but too slow to support Netflix. My 15 year old son really enjoyed exploring the game room, which is located behind Hollyhock Cabin in a separate building (it is full of games and DVDs). This can also be rented for a small fee. I think the next time I return I will bring my son’s friend and rent this for the two of them. It is a great space for teenagers. There is also a laundry room with a washer and dryer and laundry soap if you need to wash clothes. Just about anything you need you will find here. At night go outside and go star gazing. If you check out https://spotthestation.nasa.gov/sightings/index.cfm you can find out when the International Space Station goes by and get a very clear view. We happen to see it just after 11:00 p.m. This is truly the best place to stay during your visit to the Painted Hills area. My suggestion is a minimum of 3 nights in order to see the Clarno Unit, Painted Hills Unit and the Sheep Rock Unit areas. If your teenagers complain about the lack of technology you should tell them once upon a time we did not even have DVDs.
