Cannon Beach is one of the most charming and spectacular towns on the Oregon coast. Famed for the ocean views of Haystack Rock - a towering rock that sits out in the ocean’s waters - Cannon Beach is a popular destination for families and romantic vacations for two. Your vacation house, cottage or condo is likely to have ocean views and may include amenities such as Internet access, satellite or cable TV and free parking.
Ecola State Park is located on the north end of Cannon Beach, and it is famous as one of the filming locations for the classic movie, “The Goonies.” The 1,023-acre park has glorious views of Haystack Rock and includes hiking trails, picnic areas and whale-watching viewpoints. This park is one of the best-loved locations in Oregon, but its wide open spaces prevent it from feeling busy or crowded.
"Terrible Tilly": The 1881 Tillamook Rock Lighthouse - also known as “Terrible Tilly” - is nearly a mirage in the sea. It can clearly be viewed from Ecola State Park, but it is not accessible by boat which is the reason it was decommissioned in 1957. This lighthouse sits on a rock which is an ideal location for a light, but it became too difficult for light keepers to access the location. Many stunning photographs of this lighthouse can be found on the Internet, but few know where to find the best views of this mysterious lighthouse. Ecola State Park provides the best viewing location with the assistance of a telephoto lens or binoculars.
Cannon Beach is one of the best walking towns on the Oregon coast with quiet streets lined with cedar-sided homes, gardens and boutique shopping opportunities. Art galleries and quaint restaurants make this a well-known destination for artisans, and it is a popular location for weekend excursions or vacation stays. You’ll find a wide variety of cuisine, including fresh seafood, local wines and farm-fresh vegetables.
Cannon Beach’s Events: Cannon Beach hosts many annual events, including a popular sandcastle contest, several arts festivals, a yoga festival and a wine and culinary arts festival. These events add an air of excitement to this already vibrant town and offer more activities and options for your entertainment during your visit.
Cannon Beach is home to many opportunities for outdoor sports, including hiking, kite flying, horseback riding, bicycling and surfing. Surf shops in the town are available for renting surfing equipment and gear, and kites are offered for sale in many boutiques. Hiking can include beachfront exploration or forested hikes in the hills of Ecola State Park or other nearby areas. Beautiful ocean views can be seen and crashing ocean waves can be heard throughout the forests.
The weather in Cannon Beach is often rainy and windy which makes it an excellent location for storm watching and beachcombing. The temperatures are very moderate, and freezing temperatures are very unlikely any time of the year. Summer heat is also unlikely with the ocean breezes allowing for warm - but not hot - summer weather. Packing a waterproof, windproof jacket and sturdy waterproof shoes or boots will ensure that you are prepared for all types of weather in Cannon Beach.
The Oregon coast is fairly remote and there are few services. Small airports on the coast may provide an opportunity for private or charter air travel, but the best way to arrive is to fly into Portland International Airport which is a 90-minute drive from Cannon Beach. A private or rental car is the best way to travel to the coast. Commercial bus service also provides travel options to the Cannon Beach area.
