Like most of the coast of North Carolina, the Oak Island area has a humid subtropical climate that is greatly influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. Winters are often short and mild, and snowfall is rare and often light. Spring, fall and summer months can be warm and humid, and the wettest months of the year are from July through September. The area receives approximately 58 inches of rainfall and less than two inches of snowfall per year. The average high temperature in the summer is in the upper 80s and in the winter is in the upper 50s. The average low during the summer is in the 60s and 70s and during the winter is in the 30s.
How to Get There
Some people will fly into the local Cape Fear Regional Jetport located in Oak Island, but many others will fly into either Myrtle Beach or Wilmington for access to a larger airport with more commercial flights available. Renting a car is common when flying into the area so that you can explore the area at your own pace. When you are driving into Oak Island, take Highway 17 to Highway 87 south. From Highway 87, take Route 133 into Oak Island. Because of its small size, bus travel is not common directly into Oak Island.
