  • Bear Island: Hammock Beach State Park is located on this three mile oasis. A ferry takes less than 15 minutes to cover the 2.5-mile trip from May to September. Personal boats and marine taxis also offer transport to fishing and more. The catch of the day includes flounder, bluefish, and trout. Camping is a favorite activity with kayak and canoe trails waiting to fill day light hours. Groups can take a guided ranger tour for an educational experience. This is home to the loggerhead sea turtle with large eggs seen throughout the island.
  • Harkers Island: A boater’s paradise is this bustling four mile island with nearly 1,200 residents. It is the gateway to the National Seashore with two bays, two sounds, one strait, and two banks for boundaries. Fishing, swimming, and snorkeling the white sands and sculptured dunes keep tourists busy. A trip to the infamous sand hole on the west shoreline is only 16 feet above sea level. Doormat Flounder is the prized catch of the day.

Croatan National Forest

This coastal maritime forest is home to carnivorous plant species including Venus Flytraps and Sundews. Swamps, bogs, and marshes have meandering trails such as the 21-mile-long Neusiok Trail. Off-road enthusiasts will find the Black Swamp OHV Trail filled with eight miles of ideal terrain. Emerald Isle has a pier that stretches into the Bogue Sound with views of the fauna and flora of the forest.

Cape Carteret’s Weather

Warm weather dominates this area from February through November. Cool temperatures translate to just under 60 degrees for January and December. Ocean breezes keep things mild in the evenings with summers hitting 90 degrees in June, July, and August. Visitors should come prepared for plenty of sunshine.
