Serene Comfort

The house is just as charming as the pictures show but even more beautiful. Immaculately clean, roomy, comfortable and filled with family memories. The views and surroundings make you want to stay home and relax...which the 2 of us did on a couple of our days there. At night you could see the lights of San Martino di Freddana in the valley, Lucca to the south or the lovely illuminated church on an adjacent ridge (be sure to take the walk to see it--perhaps with the friendly local dog as your guide). What a delight to pick the last of the season's tomatoes and herbs to make a tasty sauce in the well stocked kitchen, then enjoy al fresco lunches in the garden. It is also a great spot to do a little artwork. Maurizio is a wonderful host and provided us with a delicious array of meats, cheeses, olives, bread, local spring water (the tap water is wonderful too) and wine. We only regretted not being able to spend more time with him, as his practice demanded his attention while we were there. After several attempts, we were able to access WIFI on our USA devices. Lucca is about a 20 minute drive, but the first 5 minutes down the hill are a bit challenging (although only lightly traveled). Castelnuovo Garfagnana and Barga are places not to miss. Gratefully the windows have screens as there are evening mosquitoes. The usually peaceful nights can be interrupted by barking dogs (chasing away some animal?). Our week here was quite idyllic and I would highly recommend this for a quality retreat in an authentic, cherished home.
