Waterfalls

There are many waterfalls close to Helen in the Chattahoochee National Forest such as Amicalola Falls. Anna Ruby Falls nearby has a visitors' center with restrooms. A short hike with an easy grade brings you to the beautiful, unspoiled falls. Minutes away, you can pan for gold at Duke's Creek Mine in nearby Sautee Nacoochee, GA.

River Rafting

In the warmer months, many people go rafting and tubing on the Chattahoochee River nearby. The water is shallow, and a shuttle is available to take you back to your starting point. There are also zip lines nearby and plenty of scenic hiking trails.

Vineyards

The Habersham Vineyards and Winery is on Main Street in Helen. The admission price includes wine samples and a souvenir glass to keep. The winery features local Georgia wines, and the attached shop has gifts for wine lovers. The winery also hosts an annual WineFest in May, with food, live music and crafts.

Weather

Daily average temperatures are in the fifties and sixties from November through March. Occasionally, there will be a drop in temperature that allows snowfall. Helen gets about three-and-a-half inches of snow a year, so you have to time it right to experience snow. Highs are in the seventies in the spring and fall, and summers are pleasant, with temperatures in the eighties.

How to Get There

Helen is 86 miles northeast of Atlanta, GA. Driving from I-85 South, take Exit 173 to GA Hwy. 17 (Helen/Toccoa) and travel west toward Toccoa. Follow the Hwy. 17 signs to Helen.

From I-85 North, take the Gainesville Exit 113 to I-985, which becomes Hwy. 365. Turn left on Hwy. 384 and right on GA Hwy. 75. Helen will be three miles ahead. If you are traveling from a distance, Helen is 100 miles from the Atlanta Airport. Hartsfield-Jackson International is a large airport with plenty of rental car options. Taxis and shuttles to Helen are available for about $100 plus tip. You can also take a three-and-a-half-hour train ride to Helen for just over $100, but you will travel most of the way on a MARTA shuttle to the train station in Toccoa, GA.
