Charming, quiet, very private with great access for sightseeing

4 of 5
The cottage is one of a trio of buildings sitting on a terrace cut into the ridge on the northern bluffs of the Loire. Beautiful, pastoral views and quick access to the main road; enough chateaux and wineries here to keep you busy for months. The landlady, the gracious and genial Marie-Claude, lives in the middle; this is one of the outbuildings on either side of her home. I think it was once a barn or agricultural building. Now it's been converted into a cosy space, with a sitting/dining area, kitchenette and bathroom downstairs, and a comfortable bedroom beneath timbered eves above. (A word of warning: the two are linked by a compact spiral staircase that's a hassle if you need to use the bathroom in the middle of the night; this is not a property for the less-agile.) The decor is bright and festive. Upstairs, you feel as if you've been wrapped in a Provencal tablecloth; downstairs, the high-ceilinged space is given warmth by wallpaper of butterflies supping at poppies and daisies, balanced by contrasting walls of elegant stripes. It's all very French. We have a choice of tables and lounge areas in the garden outside our door, and though Marie-Claude is just a stone's-throw away it's been very private because her primary entry and exit are beyond our view. We only see her when she drops by to make sure everything is going well. There's enough WiFi for basic connection, but don't push it with streaming video or attempting to connect an Apple TV device! Cooking is always a bit of a challenge in holiday homes. You'll find all the basics here ... two hobs, a microwave that doubles as an oven, essential cookware. And you will want to cook, because one of the few drawbacks of the location is that there is almost nothing in walking distance. Fondettes is essentially a sleepy suburb of Tours rather than a village in its own right, so you'll need a car for groceries and restaurants. If you are coming from the UK or the US, remember that French rentals are less inclusive than in other countries. You'll need to bring sheets and towels (unless you arrange to hire them from Marie Claude), the cupboards will be bare (not even salt & pepper) and you'll need to pay for the heat you use. The last can be very expensive in France; worth keeping in mind if you're on a budget.

A great stay

A comfortable converted barn with farmland all around. Jean and Françoise were a delight to have as the property owners. We felt like a part of their family. The barn with post and beam construction, ample room for four adults, and green and yellow pastures around you made you feel a part of it all. The lower part of the barn was being converted into more living space. We had to say goodbye personally. They invited us to meet their son and view their home. They asked us if we wanted to share some wine. Unfortunately the road was calling for our drive to Paris. We all would love to return
