|Minimum Stay||2 nights|
The property is 9,900 square meters (around 2.25 acres) and features: a main house with 2 bedrooms/bathrooms (one with a king-size bed and a sofa/single, the other with 2 full-size beds and a sofa/single), a living room, kitchen, porch, patio, and dining table. A separate cottage (honeymoon suite) has a king-size bed, a beautiful half-open bathroom and private terrace. There's a playpen and toys for kids. There is also satellite TV in both houses as well as a portable Wi-Fi hotspot for 5 hookups. A rancho (straw hut) has two dining areas, 'open-air' and 'inside', as well as hammocks and couches with great views of the beach. The main patio has an unimpeded, 180-degree view of the ocean, with couches and chairs and a big umbrella for shade. A small house for the handyman/gardener is next to the entrance to the property.
The experience is one of beauty, peace, and tranquility. With no immediate neighbors, the place is private and secluded. At night you hear nothing but crickets and crashing waves, and when the sky is clear it fills up with stars. The houses and hut have a rustic feel with modern convenience.
Aside from the handyman/gardener, a cleaning lady/cook comes daily from 8 am to 3 pm. She makes breakfast and lunch, cleans the houses, makes the beds, etc. Neither of them speak English but simple Spanish will suffice. Both are hardworking and extremely nice and have experience with foreign guests.
The beach is a famous surfing destination, yet parts of it have no or small waves were kids and less experienced swimmers can enjoy the ocean. A small river disembogues right in front of the house, giving the place an added water experience.
Just 2 Km away on the Panamerican Highway is Coronado, which offers restaurants, supermarkets, shopping centers, drugstores, banks, a hospital and a 18-hole golf course. A 45-minute drive in the other direction is El Valle (the valley), where you can enjoy hiking, mountain climbing, water falls, horseback ridding, bird watching, bike ridding, canopy tours, hot springs, and a local market on the weekends.
My parents bought this land in 1980, when Panama was still mostly unknown to the outside world safe for the Canal. I grew up spending most weekends and vacations here and it will forever hold some of the best memories of my life...
Andres de Vengoechea purchased this house in 1981
Even though Panama has experienced a boom in development and construction in the past few years, the area around this house, in particular the beachfront, has remained largely unchanged, with only family-owned houses facing the beach and river. Living in New York City, this is the place where I go to unplug and escape from it all...
A popular destination on the weekends for surfers and beach-goers alike, Punta Barco is mostly deserted on weekdays, making it pretty much your own private beach. At night, with no one around for miles, you can see the stars and listen to the crickets. In the morning you wake up to the sound of waves crashing and the smell of nothing but fresh air...
6 of my dearest friends (think, "friends who become family") and I travelled to Panama from San Francisco for my roommate, another friend, and my birthday in mid-February 2016 and stayed at Andres' compound [let's be honest, it's a compound :)] for 5 days of R&R. Let me put it simply, we couldn't have drawn up a more perfect location, residence, or scenery if we tried.
The pictures Andres has shared will make you fall in love and want to be there immediately, but they do not even come close to doing it justice. From the wooden picnic bench to the many hammocks to the mosaic floor, you're constantly smiling while staring at your home.
Jackie and the gentleman (I forget his name, sorry!) are there to cook for you every day and they do a marvelous job. They also make up your beds and organize the bathrooms for you each day. They are so kind, and make you feel at home.
There's access to the beach from the side of the property - a beach that is generally EMPTY. If you walk more than a few hundred yards in either direction, you will not see anyone for however far you choose to walk until you return.
The skies are filled with stars all evening leaving you lying on the grass, listening to music, sharing wonderful conversation with your friends - exactly what you would want!
It is a short drive to the town of Coronado, which has 2 terrific supermarkets on the main road and a plethora of delicious restaurants to choose from. The local residents are among the friendliest and warmest people I've met anywhere in the world. Take the time to talk to a few of them, they surely will leave your heart full.
I cannot recommend this house or the town enough. Thank you Andres for making your home available to folks like us!
PS. Stop by Cholo's (bar and restaurant), ask for Cesar and tell him Brendan and Alex from San Francisco sent you :)
(Party of 6; 4 adults (2 couples) & 15-y-o/20-y-o children.) We went to Panama for a family event and some desperately-needed beach time. This house could not have been more perfect for us. The home is clean, tastefully and cheerfully-decorated, and extremely comfortable. We enjoyed using the well-appointed kitchen and eating our meals at the many outdoor dining spaces. In fact, while at the house, if we were not sleeping, we were always outdoors. The hammocks are ideal for naps, the table for talking & dominoes, and the lawn furniture beckons at all times of the day. Each of us slept soundly in the bedrooms. My husband and I had the casita; OMG - the open-air bathroom was delightful. The view of the water and beach from all points of the back of the house/casita/rancho is spectacular, and access to the the beach is just steps away. During the week, we pretty much had the beach to ourselves. The caretaker lives on site in the house at the entrance to the property with his two very friendly dogs (Pirata came to the beach with us every day and Spiky napped beneath our hammocks whenever we did) and the chickens that freely wander the grounds but don't come up on the house's veranda or the porch of the casita. (How did he train them to do that?) He was incredibly attentive, helpful and friendly. The housekeeper comes daily and leaves everything looking fresh again for you. I loved strolling through the property, enjoying the sounds of the ocean and taking in all the lush and colorful foliage. On clear nights, the stargazing was phenomenal, especially with a distant lightning show. (Bring insect repellent!) The home's owner is responsive, pleasant, and quite helpful in answering questions to enable visitors to have the best trip they can. This home is located off of a nicely-paved road in a private area, yet is very close (car is needed) to grocery stores, restaurants, pharmacies, fruit & vegetable vendors, banks, and - as we unfortunately discovered - a healthcare clinic with Saturday hours, fast service, and an onsite pharmacy. (Our son ended up with swimmer's ear from body slamming himself into the waves.) It's also minutes away from the town of San Carlos (where our family is from) and about an hour's drive to El Valle, which should absolutely be experienced. Walk the beach northward during low tide & explore interesting rock/cliff formations. We were honored to be able to stay here & would do so again in a heartbeat. Thank you, Andres!
I'm originally from Panama but I've been living in Miami, FL for the past 14 years so I was looking for a house with a real Panamanian feel and I hit the jackpot with this house!. I went for 4 nights with my family and friends (husband, 2 boys, mother, ant and 2 friends) and had a wonderful time. The view of the house is just unique!, it looks directly to a local surf spot, the beach called playa Teta so there was activity around us during the day which was lots of fun. The beach is beautiful and you can enjoy it even better when is low tide. The house itself is well maintained, very cozy and relax but with all the necessary commodities like tv cable, wifi, full kitchen and a/c. The property sits on a hill with plenty of space to play around. In the case of my boys they were more than happy to be able to roam around with no trouble.
We will definitely be back to this house in the near future. We made great memories in this house.
the place is as shown in pictures, no surprises. near from the highway panamericana but no asphalt. there is a person who can cook for you. if you like seafood there is beach near to the house and buy some, you have to go by car. also have supermarkets (99 and riva smith) by car too. the beach is 100 mts from house. 2 very good rooms with 6 sleeps and other one next to the house as an independent aparment, both airconditioned. on sundays a little noise from people that come to enjoy the beach but no problem at all. you dont have to bring anything because the house is completly equiped. beware with seawater because it rises to fast in the afternoon. its better to come by car. safety place. owers are so helpfull people and very, very gentile. no problem with payments.
We are used to spend week end in this charming house from years now and nothing has change so far, its a very quiet place, the house is nice for big families, or various families and the best is that pets are allowed ( they have to behave frindly with Pirata the dogs' owners). A cleaning service is supplied you can really enjoy a lazy week end between sea and hill. Breath deeply in the morning watching the line up, and if it good for you, walk down barefoot to the beach with ur board !! A pure experience!!
You must have a car to get from the city to the house, and to go shopping or sightseeing in the nearby towns, beaches and attractions.
