Holidays in Lagrasse. Stunning medieval apartment set in walled garden with pool

Bedrooms 2

Space 1,022 sq. ft.
Property type apartment
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

A luxury 1st floor self-catering gîte with air con & en suite shower rooms.

Situated within the walls of the village our house offers visitors a relaxed, peaceful & historic holiday experience. Guy and Claire provide a warm welcome and are on hand to provide advice or suggestions on where to visit. Our reviews are excellent so why not search 'Holidays in Lagrasse' to view the comments from our past clients who describe the activities and the high standard of service that we provide. Held number 1 Speciality Lodgings 2014/15/16 in Languedoc-Rousillion and awarded Certificate of Excellence for 2015, 2016 and 2017.

During loving renovation, the house unveiled many historic secrets associated with the Cathars. There are 15 authentic stone arches scattered throughout the property and various 13th century paintings. The latter are currently under restoration with the first paintings unveiled in the village Maison de Patrimone (September 2014) revealing 20 chevaliers including one that depicts the coat of arms for Simon de Montfort who was hated in the Languedoc for his cruelty and ambition towards the Cathars - you are sure to feel you have taken a step back in time! However, with all mod cons and a comfortable feel to the living accommodation in the self catering gîte, it is history at its best! With arguably the most spectacular façade in the village, Neuf Rue de Cancans really is a gem nestled within the cobbled streets of a village voted 'One of Frances Prettiest.'

The Arch Apartment so called for its many splendid medieval arches is on the first floor of our 13th century house and has two bedrooms. The Master bedroom (kingsize), has a 3 metre high double Venetian arched window at the foot of the bed and is a light and airy room with a handmade vanity unit and large Italian shower. The garden bedroom, so called for its lovely views over the walled garden from the Juliet balcony, is a large fresh room with twin beds (can be made into a double) and has a unique modern en-suite shower room situated through yet another stone arch. There is a separate WC.

The majestic Venetian window central to the lounge/diner allows the sunlight to flood the room and window seat beneath adds character but also invites languid afternoons of reading. The fully equipped handmade reclaimed French oak fitted kitchen adds to the charm of this apartment. The apartment and garden has free wifi (18 MB) and is fully air conditioned.

The apartment also includes access to the communal garden. One of the few houses within the village walls to have a garden - a little piece of paradise can be found. With its beautiful grassy lawn, 3 BBQ areas, a pizza oven, a recent addition, 5 terraces & solar heated secure pool with sun deck, spending time in the communal garden will be high on your list of priorities.

Cathar Trail: As Lagrasse nestles in the foothills of the Pyrenees on the Cathar Trail there is an abundance of historic sightseeing to be done within the region.

Water Sports: Lagrasse has a small river beach which is a fun place to spend time relaxing and excellent for fishing. For those who want more excitement the beaches at Lucate and Port Nouvelle are only half an hour away. Here you can wind surf, water ski, kite surf, book fishing trips, hire boats and go sailing.

We provide: free wifi internet, bed linen plus tea towels and bath towels. Laundry facilities are on site. Cooler bags, ice packs etc are available for the days you would like to take a picnic. We can arrange holistic treatments, wine tasting, painting courses and for those feeling more energetic guided walking is available through the local countryside and bike hire can easily be arranged. For those of you bringing your own bikes we have plenty of secure space on site.

Holidays in Lagrasse is an ideal solution for friends and family looking to holiday together but wanting their own space! Please see our website Holidays in Lagrasse for further information on our other properties (The Grenier Apartment, The Garden Studio and the Pool View Studio).

Will consider: long term lets and short breaks.

We are open all year round.

About Guy Viccars

We are a couple that originated from Cornwall, where we both grew up in the holiday industry. After careers in the marine industry, super-yachts and economic regeneration we have found our little piece of paradise here in Lagrasse.

After a 5 year and 600 ton renovation, the secrets of the property have been revealed, providing some of the most amazing architecture, sculptures and paintings from the Cathar period.

Supplying plenty of things to see and talk about over a cold glass.

Guy Viccars purchased this apartment in 2004

Why Guy Viccars chose Lagrasse

The house is nearly a 1000 years old. It has a unique past and ongoing story that seems to build with every room you walk into.

What makes this apartment unique

To much to tell so we will wet your whistle.

Sculptures of the chief knight for the abbey of Lagrasse ( the true location of the Cathar trial).

Painting’s of the battles dating back to the 13th century. The first 26 paintings have been restored with some on display at the village 'Maison de Patrimone.'

15 arches with the last 13th century arch finally put in situ in the early part of 2014 completing a loving renovation of an immensely historic house.

Sculptures dotted throughout the property.

Why not come and see for yourself and join us for one of our legendary BBQs.

Our French home from home

  • 5 of 5

We spent my 60th birthday , the 3rd time we have stayed with Guy and Clare, they are super hosts, and we look forward to a return in the not too distant future.

Again we had a smashing time and although we had been twice before we still found new things to do and places to go, plus the much loved ones already visited. We would recommend the salt production ,place, at Gruissan (excuse spelling), just follow the signs for 'saline' if your French is as good as ours. Other recommended visits: the cafe at Ribout (sit with the locals at lunchtime and take pot luck!) , the new 1900 bistro and the restaurant at |Fontfroid (spelling again). |These are just added attractions and an added extra when staying at Claire and Guys'. All the apartments there are lovely and a better welcome you could not get anywhere.

Cheers Claire and |Guy - see you soon we hope.

Most excellent place to stay in Lagrasse

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely wonderful accommodation with perfect hosts.

The apartments are spotlessly clean with beautiful comfortable beds and lots of original features.

The communal areas are also fabulous with a garden area for relaxing full of lovely fruit trees an outside kitchen and plunge pool - all in all just wonderful.

The hosts Claire and Guy could not have been more attentive and helpful and arranged a BBQ mid week for everyone.

We have been to this area of France often and without a doubt this is the best accommodation and hosts we have experienced.

You won't be sorry if you book l promise.

A Little Piece of Paradise in Lagrasse!

  • 5 of 5

Our holiday and this magnificent accommodation in Lagrasse exceeded our expectations. Our suite was beautifully appointed and every consideration for our comfort and enjoyment was provided by our hosts, Guy and Claire (and Chili). They also took the time to share some of the best that Lagrasse and surrounding areas has to offer and we had fun exploring the castles, gorges, restaurants in the surrounding community during our stay, and wished we could have stayed longer. We highly recommend this accommodation and Lagrasse; you will not be disappointed! Sincere thanks to our hosts. We will be back!

Beautifully located and excellent hospitality

  • 5 of 5

Fabulous place and a credit to Guy and Claire who have clearly put their heart and soul into this place. Very good facilities and every detail considered. Beautiful courtyard where we enjoyed many happy communal evenings with our friends staying in the Arch apartment and Pool Studio. Great BBQ area. Pool small but perfect for cooling off and we especially loved the river area at Ribault for bathing.

Lovely accomodation and great hosts

  • 5 of 5

We spent 7 days staying in the Arch appartment in this beautiful property in Lagrasse. The accomodation was very clean and well equipped and the owners Guy and Claire could not be more helpful, making sure we had everything we needed. We were very lucky with the weather which was well in to the 30's most days, too hot for really long walks so we made great use of the beautiful garden and pool. The village is lovely and be sure to take a swim in the river, a great experience. We would highly recommend this property and Claire and Guy as hosts, who have worked so hard for many years to renovate the house and bring it to it's present glory. There are 4 other appartments and it was great getting to meet everyone staying and share this lovely house with them. Wendy and Dean, Norfolk

With consistent temperatures in the mid to late 20's from May to September this part of Southern France has something to offer everyone, with its colourful landscape which changes dramatically through the seasons.

Lagrasse is situated just 30 minutes drive from Carcassonne and 40 minutes from Narbonne. Both these wonderful cities are steeped in history with many beautiful and interesting places to explore. Lagrasse has something for everyone - bars, restaurants, local artisan shops, local supermarkets and a boulangerie to name but a few. In the summer 'brocantes' are held where you will pick up all sorts of wonderful and quirky artifacts. There is a market every Saturday in the village square where fresh regional produce can be sampled and purchased. Throughout the year you will find many events are held including live bands and classical concerts such as En Blanc et Noir. During July a internationally renowned music festival is held that engulfs the entire village. There are of course fireworks and live music to celebrate Bastille Day on July the 14th and in August there is an international ‘Banquet du Livres’ situated within the old stone walls of the medieval banqueting hall. All these lively and fun things will ensure a typically French atmosphere is found and most definitely enjoyed!

A two minute stroll up the main street will bring you to the tennis courts & the football & boules pitches. Sailing & windsurfing can be found 30 minutes drive away, so there is also something to occupy the more sporty! Skiing is approximately 2 hours away. For those wanting a truly relaxing French village experience there is the pretty beach on the river Orbieu which is only a stone's throw away through the cobbled streets. Superb fishing is also found on this river & with the Canal de Midi close by, tranquil boat trips are a must. Wonderful walks can be found in and around the village which can be tailored to suit individual needs. So whether you are wanting an invigorating hike high up in the hills or a gentle stroll along the river bank this region walking will suit all. Cycling is a fun way to explore the cobbled streets of the village and the surrounding areas we have bikes available to use. The Tour de France passes nearby each year and the tree lined roads are filled with spectators who travel from around the globe to cheer the cyclists on their way! Within easy driving distance you will also find a myriad of Cathar castles and ruins to explore.

The beautiful beaches of Leucate, Gruissan and La Franqui are located approximately 35 minutes drive away and offer all you would expect from French seaside towns. Port Leucate and its weather conditions are perfect for wind surfing, bringing keen surfers from all over Europe to hop on their boards here! There are 2 fun Aqua parks located within an hour of the house and a pirate theme park in Gruissan. In Carcassonne and Leucate there are the O2 Aventura Parcs where older children and adults can test their climbing skills - and their head for heights - in the tree top adventure park. In Sigean there is an African Safari Park which plays host - to amongst other things - elephants, lions and rhinos.
