About Dan Gilroy

Originally from Ohio I moved our family here before the children grew up because it is the opposite of cold and grey. In the decades since I have grown to love the natural beauty of things in, on and around the water.

Dan Gilroy purchased this house in 1996

Why Dan Gilroy chose Lower Florida Keys

We had wintered in the area for 2 years and picked this location because of good neighbors, easy water access and a quiet street that was still near enough to US1 to have easy access to necessities. Honestly, the view from the house across the water is the best I've ever seen down here. There's not a house in the Keys that I've ever visited that has a better view. See for yourself and decide.

What makes this house unique

The view. Almost a half acre of land which is quite large for the Keys. Lots of privacy fenced parking for friends , boat trailers and good times. Both blue water and backwater access right outside the door. Did I mention the view?

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our group had a very enjoyable stay at Casa Domingi. The weather was cooperative as we were able to fish every day and did not have any rain. The property worked out fine for us. The location is excellent for fishing the bridge area. We docked three boats and rafted two together which worked okay. The big inflated buoy’s worked great to keep the boats off the sea wall. We moved the table from the west patio into the living room for dining. We had plenty of room for parking our vehicles and boat trailers. The place is very quiet and somewhat isolated which we liked. We ended up with seven people as one individual had an accident the week before the trip and had to cancel. I slept one night on the couch and the rest of the week on the seaside patio on an air mattress and cot. The breeze was very nice and kept the mosquitoes away. Our group was definitely liked the properties and will consider it next year. I liked your house manual as it is very complete and well done. We did not eat any meals out and cooked all our meals in house.

A couple of improvements we would suggest are a fish cleaning station and rod racks for stowing the fishing rods would be nice. I did see a scorpion in the lower lever as it scooted under the chair. The seawall could use a few more cleats and bumpers to more conveniently dock three boats directly on the sea wall.

Peaceful retreat!

  • 5 of 5

We just spent a week at Casa Domingi. The house has fabulous views of th water. We were too lazy to get up with the sunrise, but saw some fantastic moon rises from the patio. The views never failed to impress us. We did a lot of sightseeing in the area and enjoyed the relaxing and peaceful surroundings of the house when we got back. There was a notebook full of terrific information at the house and we read it daily and even went to the bars and restaurants recommended. It was great information. The house iteself is very well stocked and had pretty much everything we needed. We had a small issue with an air conditioner, but the owner responded right away. The house is about a 40 minute drive to Key West and very close to the Honda Bahia State Park which is awesome. We all loved this place and highly recommend it.

Owner's Response: You nailed it, thanks folks! If you're looking for a place to recharge your batteries all the while being just a few minutes from the action, Casa Domingi is the hut for you. Walking out through the French doors to the water side veranda is breathtaking. If you did nothing more than that, your vacation would be complete... but there is so much more. It is freeing to enjoy a week of paradise here in the Florida Keys, irregardless of your game plan. That notebook is our little friend. It give you our vision of almost 20 years of local knowledge and lets you enjoy your vacation like a boss, making the most of your time. After you left, we went back to that A/C and found a kink in a line. We broke out our de-kinking device and now that we are kinkless, we have high anticipation of good things.

Owner's Response: Thanks guys! It is a great place to relax, we're glad you had a great time. As we speak, we're hard at it freshening things up to make it even more comfortable and relaxing. A little paint, a little art, we've even added a few new chaise loungers on the patio to aid in taking in that great view from the perfect location down here in the warm and sunny Florida Keys.

Quiet, Great Water View from 2 Levels, Covered

  • 5 of 5

Inside, the kitchen has all new appliances, and everything you need to cook, serve and clean up. Bedrooms are bright and happy, two overlooking the water with really comfy beds. The decision between the sunrise and bed was tough, but what a sunrise! Rooms have individual remote control temperature controls. I like energy efficiency. Shiny clean bathrooms, too. Lots of games, books and movies available for all ages, just in case. Also, read the white notebook. Very helpful.

Outside there are THREE different covered patio spots for hanging out, each with tables and chairs. One day when it was too windy for the upstairs balcony, we moved the party to the downstairs patio. Perfect. Also, the large front balcony off the kitchen overlooks the big front yard. There were mosquitoes closer to the road, but the breeze on the water side seemed to keep them there, away from the house. The citronella candles on the tables helped for the one time we were out at dusk with no breeze. The dog had a great time too. He learned stairs, and that the roosters in town were not his friend.

Next time, hopefully a longer stay, we'll rent a kayak and paddle boards to enjoy the water from the water. I would definitely recommend this property for anyone who likes quiet and remote, but so close to restaurants, bars, groceries, etc. Visit Key West if you've never been. It's pretty cool.

Owner's Response: What can I say but a very humble thank you kindly, folks. There's not much more for me to say. This accurate review says it all. There just isn't a better view on this island especially if you love dramatic sunrises. The location is excellent, convenient, quiet and tropical. This is a great, clean and well maintained base station for your next vacation.

Fair

  • 3 of 5

House was nice.

ACE in one of the rooms didn't work and it got very hot.

Refrigerator was a mess it'll turn off randomly and it was hard to stay cool.

Worst part was the mosquitos! We barely used outside patio because we got bit even with bug spray on ( hope it was because season).

Overall I give it an OK!

Owner's Response: We're located in a National Refuge, the no-see-ums can be annoying for just an hour or two around dusk and dawn during certain times of the year. The county does a great job with the mosquitoes, in 20+ years I've been bitten by a mosquito less than a dozen times in total. It would have been nice if you had contacted me just once during your stay, 2 minutes on the phone would have saved what sort of seems like a lot of distress. We saw that the A/C (they are high efficiency heat pumps) remote control for that room had been switched to heat during your stay. Oh those darned kids. The refrigerator is cleaned and sanitized between every guest and is a high end stainless steel 3 door model that is computer controlled and preset to 35 degrees up top and 0 degrees in the freezer. There is a preset buzzer that goes off if the doors aren't shut completely, because some people aren't used to these types of units. That buzzer was on when you got there and off when you left. We also went ahead and shut the fridge doors when we got there. The A/C is cold, as is the fridge, just the way we like them. I promise not to tell anyone of my mailbox being broken off after being run over by your boat trailer or the place being left in the biggest mess in 4 years after your 15 person party. Let's face facts, this place is great, your "fair" assessment, really isn't fair.

Relaxing, comfortable stay at Casa Domingi!

  • 5 of 5

We had a a great stay at Casa Domingi! The house is well equipped and very clean, the beds are very comfortable, and we had everything we could need. Dan was very responsive to questions and helpful to our trip planning. There was cut up fruit in the refrigerator on our arrival which all of us enjoyed. The view from the deck is awesome! Loved watching the sunrise over the water. My husband and I were there with our three boys (two teens and an 8 yr old). They loved being able to fish right off the back deck. We rented kayaks for the week and were able to just paddle out whenever we wanted. We had another couple staying with us for the first few days and had plenty of room. We were less than 5 minutes from the grocery store which was great for us. Lot's of good restaurants nearby, including some in walking distance. Springers is less than half a mile away and we ate there twice. No Name pub is not far and had great pizza, and about $250K of dollar bills attached to the walls of the restaurant! We visited Key West, went on a fishing excursion, a kayaking excursion, a snorkeling trip, and visited Bahia Honda beach. Key deer, iguanas, and crabs in the front yard gave us lots of exciting viewing. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay at Casa Domingi!

Owner's Response: Thanks much folks, we're glad you had a great time and you bring up some great points. Casa Domingi has a spectacular view and a great location. Quiet, comfortable convenience is pretty tough to find these days, we are lucky to have all of that right here in paradise. The Keys is truly the best America has to offer. Kids and adult kids have lots to do every day and night down here, with the only things that are dull being the butter knives. We like things clean, bright and fun here in the sun...we think you do as well. Thanks for your business and your thoughts and have a great year.
