Overview

About the property

2 bedroom, queen size sleeper sofa, 1 bathroom, sleeps 6

The Nelson house was built in the early 1870’s and was a farmhouse with several out buildings. It was built before the streets were put in so it sits crooked to the street and was sited for the least amount of heat gain from the sun in the summer. The two cottages were added in the 1920’s. The home passed from the Nelson family to several owners and the present owners bought it in 1980 and remodeled it into a preschool that served this neighborhood for 20 years. In 1999 it was remodeled again into the home and rental units it is today.

The Nelson house is located in the Old West Austin/Greater Clarksville neighborhood. Located just a mile from the Capital, Congress Ave, and the heart of downtown, this neighborhood has a varied and lively history. Originally farms, after the Civil War part of this area was turned into a black neighborhood to house the former slaves that chose to stay on and work on the farms for pay. The black foreman in charge of parceling out the lots was named Clark – hence Clarksville. Over the next hundred years the farms were slowly developed into middle and upper middle class white neighborhoods. In the 1950’s and 60’s the area, under threat of being demolished for a freeway that was never built, fell into disrepair and became a popular place for UT students to find cheap rent close to campus. About 1970 the neighborhood began a renaissance and gentrification that continues today. It has become one of the most desirable neighborhoods in town, particularly for professionals and young families, with its good public schools, great restaurants and retail within walking distance and a location that lets its residents avoid many of the city’s traffic problems. Although some of the houses (including the main Nelson House) date to the 19th century, the predominant architecture is 20th century cottages and bungalows, with a scattering of modern homes added recently.

Perfect Spot in Austin

  • 5 of 5

My friend and I had a wonderful time in Austin and loved staying in this home. It was in the perfect location. Close to shopping and restaurants, yet in a quiet neighborhood. Everything we needed was provided. The house is decorated great, clean, and has very comfortable beds. Couldn't have asked for more. If we return to Austin, this will be the place we'll call home.

Very Nice Space

  • 4 of 5

The house we stayed in met our needs. The only problem we had was with the lock. I love keyless entries, but it didn't work. Fortunately, we were able to get ahold of Amanda who at first was reluctant to help but then did.

This property is Not in Clarksville, but near by. My daughter-in-law was interested in the price which fluctuates according to time of year. Is this true of many properties?

Owner's Response: Let me apologize again that you had an issue with the lock! The keyless entry works but the batteries were low and needed replacing. I took your call while a truck full of hundreds of pounds of gravel was being deposited in my yard Saturday morning. The timing was challenging but I stayed on the phone and helped with battery retrieval as well as installation. I also recoded the lock and sent a text saying I had done it. The Nelson house is in the Old West Austin/"Greater Clarksville" neighborhood. The boundaries commonly recognized by Austinites are Lamar Blvd to Mopac and Enfield to 6th St. You may be referring to the 3-5 blocks designated as Clarksville's "Historic district". It is common for Homeowners to adjust their pricing seasonally. We have recently lowered our weekday prices as well... Always looking for the right balance. I am very glad that the Nelson met your needs and I am sorry again that you were inconvenienced. Thank you for the valuable feedback.

Most enjoyable stay in Clarksville section of Austin

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week staying at this charming, tastefully decorated, charming historic home. It was clean, well maintained and stocked with kitchen supplies as well as paper goods and plush towels. The house is located right in the center of the Clarksviille community, just under a mile walk from two coffee shops, a pharmacy, grocery store and diner. Also, a very short drive from the center of Austin where we enjoyed a wide variety of activities, on our first visit, ranging from comedy club, dueling pianos, live blues, Austin Symphony, state capital, fine restaurants, Whole Foods and Starbucks and of course TX BBQ trucks. There was always a parking spot in the driveway right in front of the house. We experience the property owner and rental agent to be very responsive to one question we had about operating the dishwasher (in Austin electric must be off when not in use) and the instructions and access were provided in plenty of time in advance. The combination lock was easy to use and better than having to keep track of a key. The two bedrooms slept four with the two bedrooms (1 KB and 1QB-both comfortable). The kitchen was roomy and allowed us to make breakfast and lunch on occasion in between meals out. It met our needs (my wife and I and our adult son and his partner) nicely for a one week destination Christmas and birthday celebration. We highly recommend this property and would seek it out first in the event of a future trip to Austin. Michael L.

Comfortable Stay

  • 5 of 5

The house was in a wonderful location for exploring Austin. You could walk to downtown (if the weather is good and you like to walk). You are near shopping and restaurants. The house itself was very clean and well appointed. Our stay was comfortable without any issues. I would stay there again
