A Nice resort for Stuart Little and his mouse family

  • 1 of 5

Our family has been going to Deer Trail Lodge in Iron River for the past 20+ years and we always rent out the entire resort. The place has slowly been going down hill since the caretaker, Bruce, left. The cabins have been sold off as condos and not all owners take pride in their property. Some cabins are rented through Bear Country Rentals and others are rented through some folks named Bill and Jayne, who were living on the property and never did any upkeep. Bill and Jayne have since moved to Florida but still rent out some cabins.

When our family arrived to camp this year, we found out that Bill and Jayne had double booked some of the cabins. Now we had family members without lodging. Another family member had a terrible stench inside their cabin to only discover there was a rotting mouse under the kitchen sink. The cabin I was staying in had mouse poop in the silverware drawer and a mouse nest was found in the extra sheets in the closet. The futon where my son was going to sleep was also covered in mouse poop. Dishes in our cabin were put away dirty and had to be washed before we could use them. Another family memeber's cabin had mouse poop on the kitchen and bathroom sinks, on the beds, and in kitchen cabinets. This family didn't even stay at the resort once the infestation of mice was found and had to find new lodging across the lake.

When we spoke to the Bear Country Rental place about the issues, they admitted to knowing there was a bad mouse problem and that they had a pest control person there to check out the problem but knew it was not resolved. He said that he has a cleaning crew who is supposed to clean cabins and check dishes to be sure they are clean. Obviously this cleaning crew does a terrible job.

There are many other issues with this resort from the unkept beach, non working motors on boats, and filthy cabins. Years ago this place was a real gem to visit. It is sad that it continues to go downhill.

I would not recommend this resort to anyone. It is gross!

Gross!!!

  • 1 of 5

Cabins were dirty with mouse droppings all over the futon, in the silverware, and a mouse nest in the closet. Another cabin had a dead mouse under the sink and it stunk terribly. Cabin next to us also has mouse droppings all over including silverware and on the beds. There were other issues of poor cleaning with food crusted on dishes and unclean bathrooms and floors. Obviously they do not do a good job cleaning nor do the owners care much about fixing the issue of mice. Beach and swim area was very weedy. Appears that no one rakes the beach and swimming area like they used to years ago. One cabin in our group was double booked and they didn't realize it until 11:30pm the night before our vacation. Paid for a motor on one of the boats and it never worked. Several issues. Overall campground continues to get worse every year. Very disappointing. Would not recommend.
