Hawaiian- Oriental Beach House at Kahalu'u National Historical District . Hawaiian Kings and Chiefs lived here because of the location!. They loved to Surf, fish, and grow amazing gardens. Kahalu'u Beach is only steps away, and has the only Surfing Hei'au in the State of Hawaii, where the Hawaiians prayed to the God "Akua" for Surf.
The Huge Lanai is both covered and open. Lounge chairs to catch the sun rays, or relax in the shade with your favorite book. The covered area has built in table along the front with chairs to enjoy the ocean views. A dining table, and a Koa Bar. Lanai couch and chairs for an open space living area.
The house opens up to this lanai, with original oriental shoji doors. The Sparkling Blue Ocean and Cool Breeze, just about comes thru the house. Its simply Amazing!
The main house has 2 bedrooms and 2 baths. Private being its separate, being on each end, north and south of the house. Shoji doors for privacy. The separate Studio is located in the rear of the house. It has its own separate entry, and is included if 5 or more people are booked.,

Behind the house is an open field with large monkey pod trees with lots of singing birds. Some of the endangered birds live here, the Hawaiian Hoary Bats, and Hawaiian I'O hawk. Pheasants are often seen hanging out in the trees.
Often times you will see the full moon, and well as the amazing Sunsets at the same time.
We own the home next door! Great for large families, re unions, check out Hale O Makai, VRBO #49376 sleeps additional 10, total combined 20 people! The home combined is quite huge. .
Alii Drive is Kona's Ocean Scenic Route. You will love the location! The supermarket, and shopping center is only one mile from the house. Every Saturday there is a farmers market, where local produces, and home made products are sold. Cut flowers, baked goods, honey, jam, and crafts. . Its great to support our local businesses, and the supermarket KTA is also a local business of 100 years. Live entertainment happens once a month.
Guest love going to the beach at least twice a day. You don't have to worry about getting a parking space. As this beach is the most popular Snorkeling beach on the entire Island, in my opinion, the State. The ocean park is absolutely a playground in Paradise, fishes galore! Make sure you have plenty of sunscreen, and get your cameras ready for some amazing life time memories.

You will love the location for one. Our price $$$ per night is the least expensive home in our neighborhood. We are surrounded only by private vacation rental homes, and not condo's or apartment. So for the most is quiet and peaceful, you can't help but love the feeling of a Hawaiian Home.
Location, Location, Location !!!..its why King Kamehameha I and III decided it was their playground and residence.
Thank you for sharing your lovely home with us! We enjoyed the relaxing lanai, and exquisite sunsets, and slept WELL in the large comfy beds.
Just got back from two fantastic weeks at Mele Kai @ Kahalu’u Beach. Two years ago we stayed at the property next door, Hale O Makai, also owned by Simmy and Michael with a smaller party of five. This year we needed more space to accommodate 6 adults and 3 children under 4 and were lucky enough to rent Mele Kai. Not only are all the pictures and descriptions spot on, Simmy and Michael are wonderful to work with and truly go above and beyond to make your stay unforgettable. If you don’t see something that you can’t live without, mention it to Simmy and she has always been able to accommodate. Lots of equipment for beach going including boogie boards, coolers, umbrellas, and currently beach chairs with shoulder straps so you can really load up for the day. There were toys galore for the little ones for both land and water. The wading pool shared by the two houses was really appreciated in the heat of July to cool down. The lanai is the highlight of the house and she has a little child gate to close one end so the kids didn’t get away from us. I know the nearby amenities are listed with the house amenities, but I want to push them all anyway since they are just as important as the house. There is shoreline access almost directly across from the house with a tiny sand area and, depending on tides and experience, you can get in the water there, but it is a rock entrance. The sandy beach park is 4 minutes walk away…or 7 if you meander looking at the flowers and great water views between the houses on the way. Kahalu’u is a great beach park with multiple water entrances and depending on the tides a nice little pool forms below one of the lifeguard stands, great for sitting and playing with little ones in the water while gentle waves wash through occasionally. There was also a food truck with snacks and the all important SHAVE ICE! Turtle viewing from above and below water is almost guaranteed. When I was coordinating this trip with multiple families I used Google Earth to show them distances and where the sand was. This location and rental was exactly what our large family needed with plenty of private/quite areas for those needing naps or less family time! Already repeat customers and Simmy will be the first person we contact on our next trip.
Fantastic location, perfect accommodation for couples or families. Within walking distance of best snorkeling beach on the Kona Coast. Simmy, the owner was a pleasure to meet and help us get settled. We highly recommend.
Our family of 10, my husband, our daughters, their husbands and our 4 grandkids, thoroughly enjoyed our 5 day stay at Hale MeleKai. Simmy lived nearby and was able to help us get settled in and answered any questions we might have. Our two 15 year-old teens and our 11 year-old boys, (all cousins) enjoyed having the “dorm style” back room to themselves and the sofa bed in the living room worked out fine for our third couple. We ate all of our “at-home” meals on the lanai in the front of the home. I especially enjoyed the home’s many ceiling fans on the warm, humid days. We all snorkeled several times at nearby Kahalu’u Beach and watched beautiful sunsets a few times at the beach access across the street up from the house. My daughter appreciated having the use of a surf board and surfed every day except the day we all spent the entire day enjoying the Volcano National Park. During our last evening in Kona we were all thrilled to snorkel at night with the manta rays up at the nearby Sheraton Hotel. The “Fair Wind” night snorkel with the mantas” was amazing and included soup & buns & hot chocolate after the snorkel. We would definitely recommend it. This was our family’s first visit to Kona, and Hale MeleKai was the perfect home in a great location from which to discover Kona’s unique qualities and sites.
The pictures are true and correct. Having arrived in the early evening with a six hour jet lag, Simmy was kind enough to meet us at the home to show us the ropes. The lanai is wonderful as is the view. There are at least two parks within easy walking distance for kids of all ages and there are enough water toys to entertain the entire crew. Keauhou shopping is about one mile away, has a KTA grocery, Pizza place(really good) and other shops of interest. Please note that food and alcohol is expensive in Kona like any other vacation spots.
The trade winds will keep you cool in late afternoon and somewhat chilled at night. The road noise from Ali'i Drive is minimal. You could drive a golf ball down Ali'i drive after 8:30 PM or so and wouldn't hit a soul.
For the chefs; If the item you need isn't in the house, you probably don't need it. The kitchen is fully stocked. There are two grills, one is gas and the other is a small charcoal grill and both work well.
For the bird lovers, get ready for a grand time with several varieties to observe. If you have little ones, you can fill the bird bath in the back with water and they can entertain themselves watching the birds bathe.
For us, the best was early morning with coffee on the lanai and watching the joggers and walkers go by and wave.
The trip to Kona Town takes about 15-20 minutes with the slow speed and stop signs. We would go in the morning and hit the lanai for happy hour.
One of the best things about this house is the host, Simmy. What a special person, if there is a problem or if you just want to know the easiest way somewhere, she is there for you. If you are a novice surfer and want to improve your style, ask Simmy really nicely and she might, just might help you hang ten. She still surfs most days. This house is a definite return for us.
Simmy, Mahalo Nui Loa
The house had everything we needed for making breakfast in the morning and having an overall comfortable stay. Lanai was our favorite spot for morning coffee, afternoon games (when it was raining) and nightcaps with conversation of what we had done that day. Location is perfect for being close to Kona town, Magic Sands and other great spots, like place of refuge for snorkeling. Very easy to work with Simmy as she is very attentive and a great host. I would book again. :)
For me, one of the things I enjoy the most about vacation is the mornings; sitting outside with my husband and friends drinking coffee and enjoying the morning. There couldn't be a better place in Kona to do just that than this property. The view is exactly as it appears in the picture and the lanai is huge, with options to sit at a table, lounge in a chaise, or sit at the bar. Whatever you choose, you have that beautiful view and a variety of bird species singing good morning. The property is central to several activities, and walking distance to a beautiful beach. The owner was very easy to work with and our deposit was returned within a week of coming home. Highly recommend this one!
Kahalu'u is a Historical Preservation District. Hawaiian High Chiefs and Kings were born in Kahalu'u. They lived here for all its beauty and because it was close one of the most beautiful beaches in Hawaii, Kahalu'u. There was plenty of fishes and still does. And also Surf in our protected bay. Kahalu'u beach park is 4.2 acre opened in 1953. It has fishponds, bathing ponds, and popular is the shallow, calm water, which teems with tame, colorful reef fish, coral head, and turtles. The Kohala Center sponsors the Reef Teach program, in which volunteers educate visitors about the marine life and water quality in order to minimize damage to the natural resources . There is still standing the ancient Surf Heiau, where they often prayed for waves. Its a very special place, and you will be amazed. We are located on the race courses of the 'Ironman Triathlon World Championship', and the Lavaman races. Our location is key, numerous beach parks are all within 10 miles, including White Sands, Pahoehoe County park, Honokohau Harbor, Old Airport has an Olympic swimming pool. gymnasium, football and soccer fields, a skateboard facility, ball fields, and community center.
