This almost new mountain cottage has a master suite with king sized bed, a door leading to the covered front porch and a large master bathroom. On the other side of the house are 2 guest rooms with a shared bath. One guest room has a king bed and the other has 2 sets of bunk beds with adult comfortable mattresses.
The living/dining areas have cathedral ceilings, wood floors and are open to the kitchen. The well furnished screened porch, located through french doors from the living/dining area, offers an outdoor living area with TV and fireplace. There are two stone, wood burning fireplaces with gas starters - one in the living room and the other on the screened in porch. Easy to light and to enjoy!
The cottage sits between two streams which provides a perfect backdrop of flowing water. Across the street is the Millpond Pavilion which features an indoor living area with full kitchen, a large covered area with massive fireplace and 2 stocked, catch and release trout ponds-perfect for the kids! A great place for evening cocktails and a fire too.
You can enjoy winter activities within 1 hour of Bear Lake - Skiing at Cataloochee (toward Waynesville) or Sapphire Valley (toward Cashiers) and snow tubing and ice skating near Highlands at Scaly Mountain Outdoor Center.
Pets will be considered with a $100 pet fee.
We live in nearby Highlands, NC (another beautiful place) and built this cottage as a weekend getaway to enjoy the lake, golf course and great clubhouse! Our family is from Savannah, GA and moved up to the mountains to raise our family of 5 girls in 1985. We enjoy renting and house swapping all over - Mexico, California and the southeast.
Margie Ashburn purchased this cottage in 2006
Bear Lake Reserve is very unique. While we are 'in the middle of nowhere' you have every amenity at your fingertips without the crowds. You can visit many places during your stay at Bear Lake - Sylva - 20 minutes; Western Carolina University - 15 minutes; Cashiers - 30 minutes; Highlands - 45 minutes; Cherokee - 40 minutes; Asheville - 1 hour. Explore the Blue Ridge and Smokey Mountains from this spot and return to a very special place.
This cottage is situated close to the Greeter's Cottage (entrance) and just down the road (a few minute walk) from the Mill Pond with stocked trout ponds, streams, hiking trails, large covered pavilion with a huge fireplace (wood provided), bathrooms and a nice living room with fully equipped kitchen. A great gathering place for meals or just drinks.
My family and I had a wonderful and relaxing Thanksgiving holiday on Bear Lake Reserve! What a wonderful gem that we have discovered and I know we will come back year after year. The Mill Pond House, where we stayed, was very cozy and had all the amenities of home and more! We loved sitting by the porch fireplace drinking wine, playing board games and listening to music ( wonderful Bose speaker provided) while in your home! I can't even begin to tell you how much fun we had exploring the Bear Lake grounds! We hiked, fished, kayaked and packed picnics that we enjoyed daily by one of the many outdoor fire pits along the way. I can't say enough about how much we loved this beautiful part of the world! This was definitely the most fun and relaxing Thanksgiving we have all had in a long time! Can't wait to come visit this summer and enjoy the many water activities and that POOL! Thank you for opening your vacation home to us! We will be back soon!
This was probably the most well furnished, comfortable, and tastefully decorated mountain house rental our family has ever visited. House was clean upon arrival, beds were super comfortable, and appliances (kitchen particularly) were either new or in almost new condition. We cooked all our meals at the house so am unable to comment on restaurants in the area, although the club house looked like it was serving up great food.
Margie was super helpful throughout the whole process and is very attentive and communicates well.
The only drawback was that the cable TV was missing NBC. It should've been there but for some reason there was no signal on the channel. Ok, normally, I would never watch TV in the mountains but the Olympics were on... I did not contact Margie regarding this as we were only there for 2 nights and we were DVRing the Olympics back at home. As we couldn't watch TV my wife enjoyed the transition from evening to night on the screen porch with a good bottle of Cab. Not a bad way to spend the evening.
I would certainly recommend this property to others, and plan on renting again next year for the Lake Logan triathlon weekend.
This was our second time to Bear Lake and we thoroughly enjoyed it again! This unique community has a wealth of outdoor activities for the whole family. We spent time at the pool, paddle-boarding, rented jet ski's and tubed from a pontoon boat. Then we would return to the Ashburn's lovely home that was quite comfortable for our party of 7 (4 adults, 3 kids). The house had everything we needed (kitchen supplies, movies, etc) and the back porch was definitely a highlight. Margie was very responsive and accommodating. We look forward to our next trip to Bear Lake!
This home was very nice & we had a most enjoyable time! The furnishings were beautiful & the kitchen was well stocked with everything you would need to prepare meals. The porch was lovely & we enjoyed sitting out there listening to the babbling stream. Great vacation spot!
Our family recently visited BLR and stayed at the Ashburn Cottage. We were very pleased with the cottage. It was clean, nicely decorated and had a very cozy feel. The kitchen was well stock with everything we needed and more. Being close to the amphitheater and mill pond was very entertaining for our kids. Also, Margie was extremely helpful with booking and making further arrangements with the cottage. Overall, a fantastic stay and our best experience at BLR so far!
Margie, my family and I loved our stay at your home at Bear Lake Reserve this summer. The home was very clean, comfortable, had everything we needed, and was exactly as promised. The setting was wonderful! We enjoyed canoeing on the lake, swimming in the pool, and having lunch at the lodge. We also enjoyed a day in Asheville (including a visit to the Biltmore Estate), visiting a beautiful waterfall (Glen Falls), and visiting the Harrah's casino (all within a reasonable drive). The Mill Pond was a little paradise and the running stream provided calming background music as we enjoyed the screened in back porch. We will definitely recommend your home and Bear Lake Reserve to friends and family - and we look forward to a return visit!
We recently stayed at the Ashburn cottage in Bear Lake Reserve and enjoyed every minute of it. The home was very well appointed and we enjoyed cooking in to listening to the water of the rushing creeks on both sides of the home. We were a short walk from the Greeter's cottage, Amphitheater, Mill Pond, and numerous trails. This home is well positioned toward the front of the development which allows easy access to get out to 107 if going to Cashiers, Highlands, or Sylva. The home is about about 5 miles from the lake club, but the drive there is beautiful and only takes about 15 minutes. We can't say enough how much we enjoyed the entire experience... In fact when we were ready to go our yellow lab would not leave the house as he knew we were heading home.
We will be back.
