|Minimum Stay||2 - 4 nights|
The Sleeping Moose Cottage is located on the North Shore of Cape Breton Island, 8 km south of Cape Smokey, between the Cape Breton Highlands National Park (25 km) and the town of Baddeck (65 km) on the Bras d'Or Lakes.
The North Shore, originally settled by Scots in the early 1800s, is now home to lots of moose, a crab and lobster fishery (May - July), as well as many fine artisans and crafters.
From the deck of the Sleeping Moose Cottage you might see whales and seals, for sure ocean birds, and 'our' Bald Eagle who does a 'fly-by' a couple of times a day. Walk to our pebble beach and enjoy the beautiful view and sometimes-loud silence of the waves hitting the pebbles.
There are lots of hiking and snowshoeing trails in and outside the National Park, and if you like golf... Highland Links is a beautiful 25-minute drive away.
The Sleeping Moose is a housekeeping cottage with a full kitchen, but it is conveniently located on the same property as the Dancing Moose Cafe. It serves unusual breakfasts and lunches bilt around Dutch Pannekoeken (stuffed pancakes), Belgian waffles, a daily soup, and baked treats, all made from scratch in our own kitchen.
We are an all-season accommodation. Start your day watching the sun rise over the ocean. Then, spend a lazy summer's eve on your private deck watching the stars come out. Light a cosy fire in your wood stove on chilly evenings, or in winter when snow has changed the landscape. On rainy days, enjoy a free movie or a bit of surfing with our free wireless Internet.
My husband, small dog and I recently spent three nights here. The rustic cottage was clean, well-cared-for, and well-supplied. We were impressed with its very efficient layout and how well-built it was. Everything was in excellent working order, and we enjoyed a very comfortable and relaxing stay. The views at the nearby rocky shore were spectacular. We used this cottage as a base from which to explore the Cabot Trail by car and the Cape Breton Highlands National Park on foot. We went on a whale watch out of Bay St. Lawrence and saw whales, seals, an ocean sunfish and incredible geologic formations. We attended a ceilidh one evening in a nearby church and enjoyed an intimate acoustic concert of traditional Cape Breton folk music. We enjoyed our breakfast of Dutch "pannekoeken" at Ton and Yvonne's Dancing Moose Cafe so much that we returned another morning for more. Our host was friendly and helpful, and made sure we felt welcomed. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here, and would heartily recommend it to others.
We had a great time at the Cottage in Wreck Cove! Simple place but had all the conveniences we needed. Just walk to the
ocean or breakfast/lunch at the restaurant. The chickens roamed around the property, were cute to watch! walked for miles by the ocean
not a sandy beach rocks, rocks and more rocks but still nice. We had a campfire our last night and watched the stars. Just down right nice and peaceful. Definitely would go back.
This cottage is perfect for nature lovers. The property is steps away from the water, and is secluded. The owner was very accommodating and very pleasant to deal with. The cottage was clean and had everything we needed. I would definitely come back.
Great place to stay on the east coast of Cape Breton, just south of Cape Smokey (about 20-25 minutes to the park entrance). Two rooms (cool bunk bed in one can sleep three, two in the small queen in the other room), functional kitchen, nice bathroom, living room with a view, wifi that is there most of the time. Good eats at the adjacent Dancing Moose. The owner is very friendly and helpful.
There is only one mirror, a cosmetic one in the bathroom, so it could use another mirror somewhere.
Our family recently spent six nights at the Sleeping Moose Cottage and absolutely loved it. It was the perfect location for exploring Cape Breton. The cottage had everything we needed for our stay, the kitchen was equipped with everything we needed to make meals, our kids loved the bunk beds in the second bedroom and the beds were comfortable. The cottage is so clean, and the pictures/description on Home Away don't do it justice as it's even better :). The view was amazing, and we spent most evenings down on the beach at the fire pit. Our kids really liked watching the chickens roaming. The owners Ton & Yvonne were so nice and accomodating. We only ate breakfast one morning at their Cafe, but it was the best breakfast we had! We only wish we had more time to spend, but will definitely stay here again if we are fortunate enough to return!
We selected this cottage for our first week of holidays in Cape Breton because of its ideal location; right off the Cabot Trail with an amazing ocean view. We were pleased with the cottage, as it was clean, well maintained and supplied just as described on the website. All appliances were in excellent condition. The owner, friendly and helpful, provided storage for our bikes—which we greatly appreciated. The cottage was far enough from the road that no noise was heard during the night, a perfect place to unwind and relax. We had coffee at the picnic table by the ocean most mornings—what a treat! We had breakfast at the Dancing Moose Café and enjoyed Dutch pancakes prepared by the owner (also owner of cottage)—very delicious and definitely a must whether or not you rent this cottage! We certainly recommend this cottage.
Located on the Cabot Trail, south of Cape Smokey. Close to the only road into the Highlands from the eastern side of the Island. For the golf enthusiast, the Sleeping Moose is located between the Bell Bay Golf Course in Baddeck (Best Value Course in Canada 2001) and The Highland Links in Ingonish Beach (#1 Golf Course in Canada 2000). We're less than a half hour from some of the finest fresh and salt water fishing in Eastern Canada. Cape Breton Highlands National Park is just a scenic 25-km drive away, and hiking trails are plenty. Cape Breton is a beautiful island in all seasons of the year, and the Sleeping Moose is available year-round, fully insulated and equipped with electric heat and your own wood stove.
