About Jim Erler, Manager LakeAway Vacation Rentals

Jim is an engineer/entrepreneur who, in addition to running Silver Bay, designs Arts & Crafts homes and advises emerging technology companies.

Catriona is a garden author/photographer/ speaker who has written 9 books and countless articles for national and international publications. See her articles in the Smith Mountain Lake Magazine (free at local businesses).

Jim Erler, Manager LakeAway Vacation Rentals purchased this estate in 2002

Why Jim Erler, Manager LakeAway Vacation Rentals chose Smith Mountain Lake

When the Point became available in 2002, Jim and Catriona purchased them and began major rennovations to prepare them for large reunions. Since 2003 Silver Bay has been a first choice on Smith Mountain Lake for reunions.

With the lake becoming a year-round destination there was a growing demand for hot tubs. So, in the spring of 2012 the Erlers undertook a major renovation project where hot tubs were added to both houses, and all the properties were updated with new HDTVs and furnishings.

What makes this estate unique

The houses on the Point enjoy the finest views of the Silver Bay rental properties, and one of the finest vistas at Smith Mountain Lake. It is also the largest of the properties, capable of accommodating up to 16 overnight guests.

Fantabulous (Fantastic location and awesome facility)

  • 5 of 5

We spent three days for this New year -2017 and our stay has been really pleasant. There were 16 (including kids) of us in the main house and Cedar cabin. This property has great lake front and views, well maintained, great recreation facilities for kids considering winter season, plenty of room, great open floor plan in the main house;. We had a blast and kids have started missing this Vacation house. We are planning to visit again during summer. Jim - the manager and owner of the property was a great guy and was cooperative helping us out in all ways to make our stay as pleasant as possible. I am going to recommend this vacation house to all my friends and colleagues.

Perfect every time!

  • 5 of 5

This is the third time we have reserved Mr. Erler's properties and we have never been disappointed. We had a sale's meeting and rented The Main House, The Cedar Cabin, and Cabin 2. Our sale's team and corporate managers could not wait to get here. It was a first for a few of the members and like those of us that have been here before, they were astounded by the properties. The number of people from our HQ that wished to attend was crazy! Everyone has heard of past meetings and all wanted to be invited. We had to pick wisely and may have to rent more properties next time. Each property has it's own personality but the one thing that is shared is the beauty that surrounds them. We had plenty of room for the meetings in the Main House and the kitchen was adequately stocked with cooking necessities to create great meals!

The fire at night under the stars is the best way in the world to end the day. Golf is nearby, the fishing is phenomenal if you know what you are doing and Mr. Erler is a great host. We take our meetings to different locations each year and this location is the favorite of all who attend.

The amenities are great for grown ups and I believe this would be an amazing spot for a family trip and/or reunion as well.

Great times!

Great property, great views, super location, great family fun. We celebrated 40 years of marriage, Patty and I, with about 25 family members, 3 birthdays and Fathers day all in the same week...

Perfect! Clean, nice, beautiful views.

  • 5 of 5

I could not have asked for a better place to hold my husband's BD party with a large family. The house and cabins are well maintained and the views were beautiful. We felt at home and I hope to make this an yearly gathering. Our questions or concerns were addressed promptly by the owner and they made me feel very welcomed. I would highly recommend staying at Silver Bay.

There is nothing more enjoyable than to stretch out on the dock with a good book, and then dive into the clear, warm water for a refreshing swim. The lake is one of the cleanest in the East Coast, and as you swim or relax, you are looking across to undeveloped wilderness.

Fishing opportunities at Silver Bay View Cottages are unbelievable. The properties are located on Witcher Creek where the stripers spawn every spring. The lake is regularly stocked with game fish, and contains striped bass, large and small mouth bass, muskies, northern pike, and an assortment of small game fish. Fishing guides are available to introduce you to the lake. See our web site for recommended guides.

There may be no better lake in the Mid-Atlantic region for boating. The 20,000 acres of Smith Mountain Lake and its 40-mile length make it a perfect place for water skiing, speed boating, canoeing, kayaking or sailing. Power boats and waverunners can be rented at several locations on the lake. See our web site for nearby marinas.

Very young children enjoy going to the sandy beach at Smith Mountain Lake State Park, which is about 10 minutes away from Silver Bay View Cottages. The park imported tons of white sand to create a lovely beach and protected swimming area that is also monitored by life guards. Be sure and bring sun screen and an umbrella to protect you from the sun. There is also a well equipped playground adjacent to the beach.

Older children enjoy 'Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn' experiences along the shoreline. Catching bait fish with a bare number 16 hook provides endless entertainment, as does catching craw dads, and fighting imaginary dragons! A boat trip to one of the islands is always a treat. After everyone has had a chance to explore every corner of one of these tiny islands, build a campfire and roast hot dogs on a stick followed by s'mores. There are campfire rings on most of the islands, as well as ample fallen wood. Just bring newspaper, matches and a pocket knife (to whittle your own hot dog and marshmallow stick) and have your own 'Huck Finn' adventure!

Nearby and along the shore of Smith Mountain Lake there are lots of interesting places to visit and things to do. You can hike along the shore at the State Park, take a cruise on the lake, tour the Visitor Center at Smith Mountain Dam, see a movie at a drive-in or indoor theater, or enjoy browsing through the many art galleries and shops in the area. The lake area is also well known for the golf courses here, as well as the hunting opportunities.

Smith Mountain Lake State Park

Only 15 minutes from Silver Bay, is Smith Mountain Lake State Park. With its 500’ wide sandy beach, it is a great place for young children to wade into the water. There are 13 hiking trails that meander through the park’s various features, including hardwood forests, pine forests, secluded coves and picturesque vistas.

Enjoy a Sightseen Cruise

Silver Bay Views is a beautiful corner of the lake, but there is much more to see. If you aren’t able to get out on the water on your own, a sightseeing tour on the Virginia Dare is a great option. Their dock is only 15 minutes from Silver Bay.

Visit Smith Mountain Dam

The Visitor’s Center at Smith Mountain is open to the public with a view overlooking the dam. Exhibits tell the history of the dam and how power is generated at the unique two-lake complex. Adults and children of all ages are fascinated by how energy is stored in Smith Mountain Lake, and its’ important role in the national power grid.

Camping and Picnicking

Smith Mountain Lake is full of islands that are ideal for camping and picnicking. One of our favorite activities is to build a campfire on one of the many inlets along Smith Mountain and cook hot dogs and marshmallows for lunch. Swimming in these pristine, mountain inlets is also a memorable experience.

There are several golf courses, both public and private, in the vicinity of Smith Mountain Lake. Course open to the public include Mariner's Landing Mariner's Landing (15 minutes from Silver Bay) and Westlake Golf & Country Club Westlake Golf & Country Club (35 minutes from Silver Bay).
