About Mathias André
We are a young couple from France, living in Italy for 8 years after some years of humanitarian work in developing countries. Our desire to grow roots some place not too far from our country of origin was naturally answered when we met with Italy and Umbria.
Mathias André purchased this House in 2008
Why Mathias André chose San Venanzo
We discovered Umbria along motorbike touring week ends off Rome. We were touched by the genuine beauty of Umbrian landscapes first. Then, the wealth of Umbrian culture as well as warmth of its people achieved to convince us that this was the place for us.
What makes this House unique
Nested in the heart of a natural reserve, this house is the dream of any nature and calm lover. Its environment is as suited for open air activities such as trekking, mountain biking etc. as it is for cultural visits, due to its ideal distance from a number of great art cities such as Todi, Orvieto, Perugia, Assisi... Tuscany is also very closely, with Montepulciano at only 60 kms, Siena 120 km, and Florence at 180 kms.

Beautifully restored and upgraded farmhouse, in beautiful country setting.
This stone home is beautifully done inside and out preserving classic hill country charm. A well appointed kitchen with stone sink, upgraded appliances and spacious comfortable dining area, made for memorable meals. Beds were comfortable, and screened windows allowed us to sleep comfortably with plenty of fresh air.
The outdoor area was very well maintained with ample seating and loungers in choice of sun or shade, dining table, and wood/charcoal BBQ. We enjoyed being able to take walks on quiet country roads, and drive to small village communities while avoiding busy traffic and discovering interesting landscapes and businesses, including country cafes and restaurants.
This home is centrally located for driving trips to most Umbrian attractions and hill towns. Marsciano has a wonderful farmers market featuring good quality produce, cheeses, pastas, and ham.
We would definitely return on a future trip.
We are glad you appreciated the house and garden atmosphere, and the charms of the lovely Umbrian countryside! You are most welcome when you wish to return to the Casale. Wishing you the very best until then! Warm regards.
Wonderful holiday home in Umbria
We had a wonderful week at this lovely home. The owners were very prompt in replying to any enquiries before, during and after the trip; there is a person "on the ground" who was equally accessible who let us in and showed us around. The house is in a great location for touring Umbria, and there is all the shopping you could want in a town 10 minutes drive away. The house was spotlessly clean, we had every possible necessity for our stay, (we were particularly happy with the kitchen set up and the washing machine). The house looks even better in person than it does in the photographs. The bedrooms have window screens so no worry about anything flying in at night. I would wholeheartedly recommend this house for a stay while touring Umbria.
We came back a second time!
What could express more our satisfaction than our repeated booking one year later?
Once again, we have enjoyed the wonderful tranquility in the so tastefully furnished house with its wonderful garden and the romantic barbecue place!
Everything went smoothly at the time of booking and the friendly takeover on site.
We (Family from Austria with 3 children aged 12, 10, 10) indeed had again a very relaxing time at Casel le Ripe! We enjoyed it!
A magical place, thank you Aurelie and Mathias!
Nested in a green valley of Umbria, 'the green heart of Italy', the house constitutes a perfect starting point to tour the region, be it for nature-related sports, or for cultural visits.
The house is surrounded by lots of green paths going up and down, with breath-taking views or within forested areas, starting with the 600 ha wide natural reserve facing the southern terrace.
The property is also the ideal location from where to go for day trips at the discovery of the many cultural beauties of Umbria: medieval cities or villages, or even Rome or Florence, only distant of about 2 hrs of motorway drive.
Amongst cities to visit in the region are:
- Perugia, the regional capital of Umbria, 20 min drive away, is a charming medieval stone town that offers multiple visit opportunities, and hosts great antique or flea markets on some week ends. In July, the 'Umbria jazz festival' is worth the trip!
- Assisi, 30 min away, is an ancient white stone city where you can calmly walk on the footsteps of San Francesco's.
- Todi, 20 min drive away, is a smaller version of the her above cousins and its fortified walls and etruscan treasures give it a certain charm.
- Orvieto, 40 min drive away, is known for its imposing black and white cathedral, nice old pedestrian city center, as well as its white wines.
- Spoleto, at 45 min drive, is another splendid and particular town that hosts a recognized music festival during the summer.
But even closer, you can also discover so many of the lovely ancient villages with suggestive names, such as Poggio Aquilone, Rotecastello, Civitella dei Conti, Ospedaletto, San vito in Monte,... which each have they own traditional Saint fairs, with live music, tables outside and delicious local foods to be shared with all their villagers.
