Take a short ride to Millway Beach (lifeguarded) and along that road you'll find the Whale Watch excursion boat, and deep sea fishing charters and several of the finest restaurants in the area. Take a ride 10 minutes away and you'll come to the Cape Cod Mall, Hyannis and Island ferry boats to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket! About J. Cameron Smith

We came to the Cape over 20 years ago and fell in love with it. If you haven't already visited before, we are sure you will fall in love with it too! The photo is at the Audubon Society Long Pasture Meadow Beach at the end of Bone Hill Road that is 1/2 mile away walking through the beautiful Pasture's paths.

J. Cameron Smith purchased this house in 2007

Why J. Cameron Smith chose Cape Cod

My family bought our Cape home because we the love the area and want to live here someday. The home is close to Barnstable Harbor, Audubon Society Wildlife Sanctuary Sandy Neck beach, and Rt. 6A, and although close to Hyannis and all the amenities, it feels like we are far away from the hustle and bustle. Being close to the Audubon Society's Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary allows us a beautiful walk to the beach through the grass and meadow trails and also brings all the birds and their beauty right to our home.

What makes this house unique

The quaintness of Barnstable village and the bay side of the Cape offers 'Old Cape Cod' feel with everything from beaches to restaurants to shops to malls to whale watches, bike rides, long nature walks, to stress-relieving relaxation!

Guestbook comments from the owner

This lovely home offers a peaceful and private setting, yet is located ideally for exploring the Cape. Our family enjoyed walking to the beach at sunset, boogie-boarding in the waves of the Cape's beautiful beaches, taking in Cape Cod League baseball games, and cooling off with a swim after a long bike ride. The house is well-organized and thoughtfully equipped with everything you might need on vacation, and the owner's tips on restaurants, beaches and other local information were invaluable. For our family, this was the perfect spot for a great summer vacation! Alex A. of Chevy Chase, MD Vacationed August 2009

An Idyllic getaway

  • 5 of 5

From the second you walk thru the door, you can tell this is a home that is loved by it's owner. It is clean, well cared for, and personalized in a way that makes you feel right at home, without being ostentatious. It's roomy, well lit, and well ventilated. If you're traveling with more than one family, it's easy to find some privacy too.

Janet, the owner, is a friendly and committed host. All questions are answered in a timely manner, and excellent suggestions for local attractions were offered freely. Other big pluses include an outdoor shower that is heavenly, 1st rate gas grill, beautiful patio that overlooks a sea of grape trees, and two cabinets of games for the kiddies.

My only criticism would be that the beds are not quite up to par with the rest of the house. Much too hard for me, but if a hard bed is your thing, than you can strike this last comment and know that I give this place 100%.

Thank you Janet!

Owner's Response: I am happy to have accommodated you and your family and that you enjoyed your stay. (Since I only share my home for a short time in the Summer and occasional weekends, there is no way to be able to accommodate each guest with individual preferences.) Otherwise, I am glad you enjoyed my home for your Cape Cod vacation.

Great setting, location and host but the beds and TVs.....

  • 3 of 5

This is a very beautiful area of Cape Cod. The proximity to good restaurants,

food shopping, ice cream, beaches, and other areas of the Cape is perfect.

Janet was great to communicate with and we enjoyed the house's layout,

kitchen and deck with bbq. Walking distance away is Bone Hill Beach and it's lovely.

The downsides for us were the uncomfortable beds (we used all three bedrooms) and the

outdated TVs in the master bedroom and upstairs family room.

The bedroom air conditioners made some very funky noises too which didn't

help our sleeps either.

If you can sleep on anything and don't watch tv, you'll love it here!

Just my honest opinion...

Owner's Response: I'm sorry to learn you were disappointed. When I called to ask how everything was, you informed me everything was great so this review comes as a surprise. I do know the bunk beds have light mattresses because heavy mattresses make it impossible to make bunk beds, possibly making them less comfortable, but the master bedroom has a 3" tempurpedic topper and a quality mattress and all the other beds have quality mattresses too. All television sets work well, and I have premium channels. I agree with you though, if you are coming to Cape Cod to watch television on the newest technology, another home might be more suitable for you.

Quiet family-oriented retreat

  • 5 of 5

Janet has a lovely home and was very easy to work with. The house was set up with everything we needed for a family of four and even some fun bonuses for the kids that we don't usually see at rental houses. The toys in the garage were a nice distraction after a full day at the beach. It was also the most tastefully decorated vacation house that we've stayed in. One minor detraction - the beds in the bunk room could have been a little more comfortable, but my 3yo didn't mind! Also important for those with young children to keep in mind - the master is downstairs, pretty far from the other two bedrooms.

We enjoyed the easy access to great beaches - Dowses and the local Bone Hill beach were our favorites, although we just called the local spot "The Hermit Crab Beach" for reasons I won't bother explaining. We loved exploring the tide pools for sea creatures and walking out as far as we could.

We would gladly stay there again.

I was expecting a better equipped house.

  • 3 of 5

I guess I am not used to Cape Cod Rentals (although we have rented in Martha's Vineyard twice and in Chatham once). The most serious problem was an inadequate supply of toilet paper (a total of 1-1/2 rolls for 3 bathrooms). We only discovered the shortage after we had used up half of the supply. The other deficiency was a lack of silverware to serve more than 6 people. We were visiting family and would have liked to have entertained more than 4 guests for a meal. That really would have been very difficult. I will say that the glassware and especially the wine glasses were excellent both in quantity and quality.

The house very nicely appointed and well designed and furnished. The toys for our grand kids were great and the yard is very large. The house is incredibly quiet which made it very nice on the mornings we wanted to sleep in. Knowing what I know now, I would rent the house again but check the toilet paper and paper towels as soon as I walked in.

I got into quite a tiff with the owner. Her biggest complaint was that my son dared to bring some food and staples for us, left in a couple of bags on the kitchen counter, and arrived before 4:00pm. A huge taboo for this owner.

Owner's Response: Thank you for letting me know that I need to replenish my eating utensils which I will do before my next guests arrive on Saturday. You had mentioned to me that you had not read the lease until I re-sent it to you midweek of your stay, so it is understandable that you were not clear on the terms of the lease. As I nicely explained to you, when guests arrive 3 hours before the agreed to arrival time of 4 pm, my home is often still being cleaned and moving things into the home before the agreed to arrival/access time impacts the cleaning crew's ability to clean thoroughly without moving guests' items brought into the home before they are finished cleaning. Providing a clean home for my guests is very important to me! The lease also clearly states that renters are responsible for all consumables including toilet paper, paper towels, etc; however, I do start each guests' stay with all 3 bathrooms equipped with fresh rolls of toilet paper, a roll of paper towels in the kitchen and plenty of laundry, dishwashing, and dishwasher detergents, many kitchen consumables and ask my guests before departing my home to replenish any owner provided supplies which they have depleted. So hopefully you now understand that it is important to read and print out a copy of the lease prior to arrival to understand the terms you have agreed to when you booked your vacation stay. Other than that, I am glad you enjoyed your vacation and stay at my home!

Great house for 2 families

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed the house. It is in a quiet location but convenient to Barnstable Village. It is a good set up for Grandparents and a family with kids. Janet has provided all linens and this is a big plus. The only downside ( if you consider it one) it the lack of current technology in the home. The WiFi is perfect but the old CRT monitors are not! So if you really enjoy TV in the evening this is not a good experience. Janet has a beach pass for all Barnstable beaches and we spent most days on Craigsville Beach but you need to arrive early, be 10:30. Great weather and nice, clean house. Enjoy.

Beautiful home, located on major route on Cape which is easily accessible to everything!

  • 5 of 5

First off Janet was amazing. Her home is beautiful and located in a great place that is easily accessible to everything.

Janet was super accommodating and a pleasure to work with in renting her home. The cleaning lady she uses is equally as nice and accommodating. I highly recommend this property for your summer vacation down the cape!
