Lee Byers, a full time Highlands resident of 14 years, worked in Highlands as a teenager at his father's clothing store and fell in love with the area. He's been around Highlands since he was 5 years old and can frequently be seen displaying custom leather and pearl jewelry at most art shows in town and throughout the southeast. He volunteers in and is part of the Highlands community.
Lee Byers purchased this cabin in 1948
The Byers family built this cabin, and it has remained in and been maintained by the family so each generation could enjoy the wonders of Highlands and this cabin getaway. This location was chosen for its spectacular view and access to the lake and proximity to attractions.
The lake view, private dock, canoes, and sunset over the mountains are hard to beat. The large dining table has been host to many card games, family dinners, and relaxing times with friends. The rocking chairs on the porch provide a great way to enjoy the scenery while the steaks cook on the grill. The loft provides an open but separate area for 6 people to sleep.
The cabin is far grander in person than in the photos. It is also very comfortable and the lake setting is serene yet spectacular. Lee is a true southern gentleman and a wealth of knowledge regarding the many dining and entertainment options that are very nearby. We were on a tight family wedding schedule so we weren't able to take full advantage of his suggestions, but we did love the amazing food at Mountain Air. Oh, and the downtown is beyond charming and is very close to the cabin. We are hoping to return later this summer or early in the fall.
This cabin is a gem and owners were a pleasure to communicate with! Plenty of comfy seating to gather the family at night which is a bonus! Kitchen fully stocked. More than enough of whatever we needed. The view is amazing and the breeze off the lake was truly fireplace worthy on a July night! Great deck! Quiet private street. Within minutes from downtown Highlands but feels so secluded from it. We will be back! Pointers for cabin seekers: trek down to lake is steep and could be unsafe for younger children or elderly. Trek back up is challenging for the cardio challenged. Neighbors are close by but lovely people. Canoes were a huge bonus! Cabin was clean and comfortable. No negatives! Beautiful area and cabin!!! There is no central AC but we didn't need it in mid July! Highlands temps are typically much cooler than surrounding areas and add the breeze off the lake and it was heaven! We were literally cold at night with blankets.
You will love this place!
The photos do not do this place justice. My family (me, my husband, two young girls - 9 & 11, and our two dogs) had the best quiet but fun family time at this house. We have been to Highlands, Cashiers and Scaly Mountain many times. We used to visit many times a summer when we lived in Atlanta. We moved to Destin about 6 years ago and since then, only get to NC about once or twice a year. We are so thrilled to have discovered this house! This will be our first pick going forward. My whole family loved this house and there's much more room for more to join us next time! There are many books and fun games at the house (including cards, the cutest checkerboard I have ever seen, Cranium, and many, many more) and a large picnic style table inside that accommodates dining or games with bigger groups. Outside is a grill, hook and loop game (which my daughters seemed to master!), adirondack chairs and outdoor dining set. We spent much of our time on the back deck with the most gorgeous view. I have photos of our girls every year at the same spots on some of the trails. Usually we are off hiking and seeing waterfalls (which there are many nearby), but this house sits right on Lake Sequoyah and we found it hard to leave the house and it's serene settings. The beds are very comfortable as well as the rocking chairs and couches inside. It was too warm to use the fireplace but we plan on visiting in the fall and I know we will love it. The house does not have A/C but even in mid-June we didn't need it. There was constantly a nice breeze as well as plenty of fans. We enjoyed having the windows open at night. Best of all was the owner. He went out of his way to make sure we had everything we needed, and then some. He lives in the area and is easily reachable should you need anything at all. He checked on us mid-visit just to make sure everything was going well and that we were having a great time. Of course we were. We would recommend this cabin to anyone.
Quiet, peaceful cabin in mountains with a spectacular view of Lake Sequoyah. This is secluded and perfect for relaxing. Hiking trails and beautiful water falls are nearby as well as the town of Highlands with unique shops and many restaurants. We enjoyed a blue grass band at the Ugly Dog Café. This cabin has a cozy living room, comfortable beds and everything you need. This was our first trip to the area and we want to return. We would highly recommend this cabin to family and friends.
If you're looking for a quiet, peaceful place in the mountains with comfortable beds, a well-equipped kitchen, a warm, cozy living room, and a large deck directly overlooking beautiful Lake Sequoyah, look no further---this cabin's for you!
It's secluded and private and perfect for relaxng, yet just a short distance from great hiking trails, breathtaking waterfalls, and the charming town of Highlands with its many restaurants and unique shopping. You can be as idle or as busy as you choose to be.
The only negative is that after several days, we had to pack up and leave. This was our first trip to this area, and we can't wait to return. We would, without hesitation, recommend this cabin to family and friends.
We had a great time staying in Highlands. Loved going into Highlands to shop and loved being at the cabin. Beautiful and peaceful
