A very comfortable home to stay with family. We loved the location. Felt secluded but yet close to main roads. Enjoyed watching all the deer & the view was beautiful.

Amazing home in an amazing location!

  • 5 of 5

We are a family from MN and were looking for a relaxing time away from the big city lifestyle. This home provided all of that and more. What an amazing experience! The home itself was beautiful and made you feel right at home. The location couldn't have been better. We enjoyed sitting on the front porch looking out over the mountains or sitting on the secluded back porch. Even though you felt you were miles and miles from civilization you could drive 5 min to downtown Deadwood, which was a great experience as well. Even though the drive from SE MN was quite lengthy this home provided everything we could have imagined and more. We all thank Randy and his family for opening up their home to us. We look forward to coming out again!

Beautiful House, Great Location, Poor Communication

  • 3 of 5

Our stay at the Gold Dust Manor was very nice. The house is beautiful and well kept, and the location is very quiet and private- just a short distance from many main attractions. Our family enjoyed a week together celebrating my grandparents birthdays. With all that being said, the reason I cannot give this a 5-star review is due to poor communication with the owner. To his credit, Randy is very prompt and is always just a phone-call away, which is greatly appreciated. However, two weeks before our stay, there was a lot of confusion and miscommunication about how many people were staying, as well as our parking and logistical needs. From the beginning, we made our intentions with the property very clear. We explained the special circumstances that surrounded our reservation, and in the end, we had to make alternative arrangements for some of our family members. This was very frustrating as we had written documentation of our details, and spoke with the owner on the phone before booking the property. We booked the property over 7 months in advance, and as we got closer, the owner did not seem to remember our conversations, and his story always changed. Randy did not charge us for the extra family members we had on the property during the day, which was appreciated; however, we wish he would have been up front from the beginning of our conversation and told us that his place would not accommodate all of us. This message came far too late, and well after all the payments had been made. All in all, we made it work and had a lovely time with our family. I would recommend this property as it is a beautiful location and a gorgeous house. I would also strongly recommend that you have all correspondence in writing and avoid phone conversations that have the potential to lead to a classic "he said, she said" situation. I certainly hope that this issue will cause the owner to be more careful and attentive to details before allowing people to book his property in the future.

Owner's Response: I hate commenting but This is an unfair remarks about the situation. GUEST decided to relocate their motor home after I agreed to let them keep it on property. They had been advised that an upcharges would be added for the 5+ guests over my maximum. They than wanted me to pay for their decision to park in town. I DID not up charge them and refused to pay for their 50' motor home & 2 campers that were parked in town. This is why they are angry. FYI, I have this all in writing. Please know that ALL 18 members of this family utilized my house at no additional charges by me.

Beautiful setting with lots of wildlife but centrally located

  • 5 of 5

This home is spacious (yet cozy) and contains the modern amenities we have come to expect when renting vacation homes. Our 9 year-old loved having the downstairs area to herself and particularly enjoyed being able to watch TV on the bigscreen after long days on the road out sightseeing during our stay. It was especially nice to be able to come "home" in the evenings and cook dinner in the large kitchen and then retire to the game room for a few games of pool before going to bed.

Having never been to South Dakota before, we were uncertain about the location and wondered whether it would work for our family. In hindsight, I can say that we nailed it with this location. It really is reasonably close to all of the beautiful sights and tourist attractions that people visiting the area want to see and visit. Our standard response when our daughter asked how far something was from this house was that "it's about an hour away." And that's one of this home's greatest attributes. The home is close to Deadwood for those who want to dine in town for meals, but there is a great little grocery store (Lynn's Dakota Mart) that is 10-15 minutes away (in neighboring Lead) that had all of the necessities that we needed since we chose to cook instead.

Seeing deer while having coffee on the front porch and wild turkey while dining on the back patio was an added bonus!

Although we experienced a hot water shortage a couple of days into our stay (which was a Sunday and thus caused us concern about how timely the issue would be resolved), we contacted Randy by phone to report the problem. Randy immediately contacted someone in the area who came out to the house while we were out sightseeing (so we were not inconvenienced in any way) to remedy the situation. More importantly, Randy called us several times throughout the day to keep us informed about what was happening back at the house. Upon our return that evening, the hot water heater was working fine. Other than this - which was handled timely and satisfactorily - we have nothing but nice things to say about the property.

Randy was a pleasure to work with, and he is the first and only property owner from whom we have rented who emailed me before we even made it back home to inquire about our satisfaction. We appreciate his genuine desire to please his clients and to offer a memorable experience!

Nice private location and lots of space

  • 4 of 5

Plenty of deer to view and a few wild Turkeys. Nice accommodations. Apparently the hot water heater is on a timer as early afternoon shower water was only tepid. Pool table could use some new felt and rails and kitchen spices a bit sparse. But just minor issues would definitely stay again.

Owner's Response: Just to clarify some comments here. Hot water heater is not on a timer. I appreciate this comment so that I may look into the problem. We DO NOT supply spices or any consumables to our quests except for package coffee. I always encourage my guests to let me know if they encounter any problems.
