Lake Champlain Islands Cottage Rental Photos and Description

3 bedrooms , 1 full & 1 3/4 bath, sleeps 6

As beautiful and peaceful on the outside as it is on the inside, you can be among the first to enjoy a stay at this brand new, year round lakeside cottage, completed and just listed for rent in April, 2012. Situated just steps away from the quiet western shore on the southern end of the historic island sanctuary of Isle La Motte, you’ll enjoy spectacular sunsets over Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains right from your own screened-in porch. Built by a local craftsman, the cottage features decorative woodwork, charming furnishings and attention to detail that is evident in every aspect of this island getaway.

Isle la Motte is perfect for bike riding and exploration, which will surely include a walk to the Historic Fisk Farm for Sunday afternoon Tea. Each week in July and August, features musical entertainment and art exhibits on the lawn and in their historic horse and carriage barn. Every visit to the island should include a visit to the Fisk Quarry Preserve, a 20 acre site which contains rich wetland habitat for birds and animals as well as home to the 450 million year-old Chazy Fossil Reef . Be sure to also visit St Anne’s Shrine on the northern point of the island, the site of the island’s first French settlement in 1666, which included a fort and chapel.

Suitability:
  • children welcome
  • non smoking only
  • pets not allowed

Perfection and peace

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing week at Little House on Isle La Motte! The house exceeded our expectations. It was immaculate, and modern, completely as described and the pictures suggested. We really appreciated the kayaks, canoe, bikes, even corn hole because that meant we didn't need to bring anything but our clothes and groceries for our week stay. The island is quiet, the lake is beautiful and clean and so clear. It was nice and cool in the morning. Temps were perfect for biking and my husband was able to get some nice long runs in without worrying about heat or humidity. We loved biking to the South End Cafe for a great lunch and pastries, the Fisk Farm on Sunday for music, tea in the garden and an arts and craft show. Our two teenaged daughters were also able to enjoy the peace and quiet (and stay connected with all their friends back home with the wifi). We'll definitely be back!

A wonderful retreat

  • 5 of 5

We (four adults, one child) loved Little House. The place is meticulously clean, well-organized with all the necessary amenities inside (pots, pans, local resources, etc.) and out (croquet, chairs, boats, etc.).

The water access is lovely...a sturdy deck with chairs perched a bit above a long dock. As you may be able to tell from the pictures, the lake is across a road...but it is a quiet dirt/cinder road and was not at all an impediment. The water at the end of the dock was perhaps about 3.5-4 feet deep (reportedly lower than usual for early July) so no diving, but there is ladder access both at the end of the dock and to a rocky beach if you prefer to wade in slowly. The water was crystal clear and refreshing. Water shoes are a MUST, as is true in most settings at Lake Champlain.

Three of our party were avid bikers and found plenty of local routes. There are also bikes on site for more casual riders.

The screened in porch is generously sized and welcoming...a great place to have a morning coffee, watch the sunset, or have an evening cocktail...or all three!

The bedrooms are arranged such that downstairs is a master suite with a king size bed (premium sheets and bedding, very nice) and bathroom (shower). This bedroom is separated from the main living area by a slightly strange telescoping set of doors that took a bit of getting used to and didn't always stay shut. Nevertheless, the room was cool and comfortable.

Upstairs are two more bedrooms, one a queen size bed and one with two twins, along with another bathroom / shower. These rooms are smaller, but functional and well-appointed.

Good thought was given to needs for linens, towels (for both beach and bath) and basic supplies, as well as a sweet gift of Vermont coffee.

The owner met us at the property for check in and check out, and lives nearby (but does not drop in or anything like that!) Pre-arrival communications with the owner were easy and informative.

We enjoyed the local old-school Ruthcliffe Lodge (5 minutes away) that serves solid food. Ask for a table outside...the inner dining room is a bit gloomy / panelled. Also, strangely, the restaurant is found at the end of a trailer park...but the food was good.

We also revisited our old standby from previous trips to the Island, the North Hero House (20-25 minutes away).

We may well rent here again -- it was a lovely spot!

Perfect in every way!

  • 5 of 5

The listing description of Little House, the photos, and the prompt, informative and friendly responses to our inquiries prior to our arrival raised our expectations and excitement about visiting Isle La Motte for the first time. We were not disappointed. In fact, our magical experience far exceeded our expectations. Alex and David are absolutely lovely, and their Little House is truly an immaculate, well-appointed, beautifully designed gem. We were four adults, and our accommodations provided us with both privacy and comfort. Every possible amenity was present including top quality mattresses, linens, dinnerware, artwork, and a Vermont Casting outdoor grill which my husband is still raving about! The location is beyond belief. We couldn't take our eyes off the beautiful lake and mountain views, right outside our window....and just a few steps away. My husband caught his biggest bass of the season from their provided rowboat! We rode our bikes almost daily to St. Anne's shrine, and I miss that destination still. Alex's recommendations for shopping and dining were spot on. Burlington was lovely, the Shelburne Museum unforgettable, Ruth Cliff for dinner out was extraordinary, and the Market in North Hero for fresh meats, vegetables, and baked goods was so convenient. We can't wait to return, and we would recommend Isle La Motte and the beautiful Little House to all!

Everything we hoped for and more

  • 5 of 5

We were 4 adults and we just spent two glorious weeks at Little House. We were blessed with excellent end-of-summer weather and thoroughly enjoyed relaxing by the lake, reading, swimming, kayaking, biking and using the wonderful outdoor kitchen/grill almost every night. Evenings were spent on the screened in porch which is a perfect addition to an already perfect home. Little House is not so little and provided ample space for the 4 of us to be together or enjoy our privacy. Isle La Motte is a small jewel that comes complete with beautiful scenery, killer sunsets, starry nights and friendly, helpful people. Two of the most friendly and most helpful are Alex and David. They love their piece of paradise and are anxious to share it with visitors. They go out of their way to make you feel welcome and will do their very best to accommodate any wish or request you may have. The house is exactly as pictured, immaculate, well maintained and lovingly cared for. We were sad to leave and look forward to returning at some time in the not too distant future. Book it! You’ll be glad you did.

Extraordinary Vacation

  • 5 of 5

A week at LH is the best way to experience the Lake Champlain Islands of Vermont. My family, which includes my wife and two children (ages 5 and 8), had a fun-filled week in mid August. The beautifully, custom-built home is situated perfectly on the island. Alex and David have thought of everything that you could possibly want to enjoy yourself on vacation. They provide a well-equipped kitchen for those who enjoy cooking, comfortable couches for chillin' out, kayaks, bikes and helmets, a canoe, paddle boat and a floating dock. We had the best time biking around the island, doing cannonballs off the dock, kayaking and fishing in the lake, and hiking in the nearby state parks. My son and I caught over 30 fish in the lake, it was ridiculous! We enjoyed grilling our fresh-caught bass and dining in the screened-in porch, before walking over to the dock to watch the sun set right on the lake. The LH rocks when it comes to a high-quality vacation for your family, one that we will never forget.

Wow! Best accommodation on the island!

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a clean, quiet, well-equipped get-away, Little House is for you. Alex and David were superb host/hostess and couldn't have been more accommodating. The kitchen has every appliance and gadget you could possibly want, with a full spice rack available! The grounds (lawn, gardens, etc) are meticulously tended and the inside of the house is well-appointed and sparkling clean. We appreciated Alex and David's balance of being available in an instance should we need them, but not interfering with our privacy. They are seriously, the best hosts anyone could want to rent from. We took trips into Burlington, and up to Montreal and had a wonderful time...but always looked forward to coming back to the peace and quiet of Little House.

Two suggestions - if you are thinking of booking a vacation at Little House:

First, if the availability of water activities are high on your list, don't book Little House until late June. We went the first week of June and the water temperature was still 47 degrees. Because of this, we opted out of kayaking, boating, etc. For us, this was no big deal...instead, we went on a sunset cruise on Lake Champlain and that was beautiful. But swimming, boating, etc. were not an option for us.

Secondly, if you need fast internet, the island does not provide this. The internet connection was OK for checking email, etc., but not usable for downloading or streaming. Again, no big deal - a vacation from technology is not a bad idea! :)

If you are coming to Isle La Motte from the west, we would suggest using a ferry crossing. This was a fun introduction to Lake Champlain. Just be sure to check to make sure the ferry crossing you choose is open. The first one our GPS took us to was not yet open for the season. We ended up at the Plattsburgh ferry crossing. It was fast, convenient, inexpensive, and fun.

Bottom line - highly recommended. Alex and David thought of everything! Literally EVERYTHING! We hope to be back to Little House in the future.
