not worth the cost at $800+ per night

  • 2 of 5

Bottom line - it was not worth the cost per night. The property itself was run down (i.e. rusty lawn furniture, doors that won't close unless you use a rock, broken ice maker and water filter from fridge, leaky shower faucet, and a muddy/swampy plank of wood to get from the stairs to the beach). The cottage itself is quite small, which was not that much of a surprise given the pictures. That being said, people with a BMI in the overweight range will have a hard time walking around in the bedroom due to the cramped space. The private beach was ok. Nothing spectacular. The beach itself was very limited also in space (perhaps due to the time of year). We were warned about this prior to coming; it was only problematic in that you have no choice but to sit very close to the tall grasses, which are swarming with flying beetles and tons of small black bugs crawling around everywhere in the sand. You will have to bring your own beach equipment too. I would not stay here again even at a reduced rate. Plus being that this property is rented through a larger agency, they require a $50 early check in (only 2 hours earlier though) and $50 late check out. I think this is absurd given the amount of money per night being paid for this particular property. To provide fuller context, I'm an outdoorsy person and have stayed in many a cabins/cottages from the east coast to the midwest. This is by far the worst I have ever stayed in.

Owner's Response: Our greatest interest is in matching our guests with the right home, which is why we love talking with our guests about the homes. If you have any questions or concerns about the features of this home just give us a call! The few maintenance issues were also reported during this stay and have been addressed. We have made it clear through the description what to expect. We describe it as a classic and traditional cottage. The kitchen is well-maintained but shows its age through original countertops and repainted cabinets that depicted on the listing, along with all the other rooms and furnishings. A few of the guest bedrooms are small and show in the images. The home is located in a wooded area which provides great privacy but also comes with bugs. The home is on a mosquito and tick treatment plan however it is only treated around the house and yard. We do not treat the beach as to not disturb the sensitive dune environment. Our check-in (4PM) and check-out (10AM) times are required to properly clean and maintain the exterior of the property throughout the summer when back-to-back reservations are common. There are fees associated to extending your stay. We have rented this home since 2003 and has attracted happy guests every year. It is unfortunate that this guest did not enjoy the house and we do discourage future guests from this property who prefer upscale accommodations.

Cozy, Cute and Comfortable

  • 5 of 5

We have visited the Saugatuck/Douglas area many times over the years, but now we have finally found the perfect fit for our family of four at the Beach Cottage. Down a long shady lane, surrounded by beautiful trees with a spectacular view of Lake Michigan, this cottage is perfectly situated. You are only a five minute drive to the restaurants, shops and galleries of Douglas and Saugatuck yet you are in a world of seclusion and peace in this lovely cottage. Gorgeously appointed with chic rustic details. The kitchen is stocked with all the tools you need. We loved the firepit and climbing the 65 stairs to the quiet beach. Gorgeous sunsets. Don't miss Kismet Bakery, a five minute drive to the southeast. We enjoyed board games on the sun porch and peaceful nights in the three tiny bedrooms. Lovely.

Charming Beach Front Cottage

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we saw this cottage we were impressed. Nestled in the woods yet minutes to all amenities, this beach front home has many wonderful features. From relaxing in the cozy sun porch enjoying the spectacular sunset to watching my kids romp on the private beach much joy was had by all. The only down side was the myriad of steps leading down to the beach. I would not recommend this place for the elderly who would find the trek down the steps daunting.

Charming Beach Cottage

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a secluded beach home yet close too all the amenities look no further. This beach house is nestled in woodsy surroundings yet minutes from downtown Saugatuck. With spectacular views of Lake Michigan and private access to the beach it was the perfect setting. At night we were able to cook out on the gas grill and enjoy family time while sitting around the fire pit. I would recommend this cottage to anyone.

Very Nice Cottage

  • 4 of 5

Great management company, great house, great private beach. Everyone was so friendly and helpful when keeping us posted as to when we could check in. My husband and I would walk our dog every morning on the beach and determined that the beach frontage was one of the nicer ones among all the homes. Very peaceful and relaxing.

Owner's Response: Happy to hear you and your pet had a great stay at Beach Cottage. We do everything we can to make the check-in process as seamless as possible. It is important to us to make everyone feel like a guest and not just a "renter" so we answer any questions about the area and give recommendations at check in.
