“This luxurious 4 bedroom townhouse is located a short walk from the crescent shaped beach of Essaouira and the fabulous Medina and the house offers peace and privacy that is unique to this property. The spacious living area includes an open plan kitchen-dining room which is fully equipped for self-catering. The housekeeper, who visits daily on request, can cook our guests delicious Moroccan tagines and couscous from our in-house menu and breakfasts. A comfortable salon with open fire has views over the town of Essaouira. Four traditionally decorated en-suite bedrooms are located over three floors and all have views of Essaouira towards the sea. The roof terrace offers spectacular panoramic views of the town, is sun drenched all day and faces the sea. The terrace has dining furniture and a pergola which is perfect for alfresco breakfast or dining on the warm Moroccan evenings and there are sun loungers for soaking up the Essaouiran sunshine on a beautiful day!
Day Trips: You can take short day trips to; Moulay Bouzerktoune a stretch of beach with a stronger side shore wind than Essaouira, and offers one of the best wave spots just outside Europe. In the winter with 2 - 5 meters waves this is a spot for confident wave sailors.
Sidi Kaouki to the south of Essaouira this is a 5 km long beach again with a cross shore wind and good waves in the winter. Conditions here can vary and with different entry points you will find the right waves for beginner and more advanced wave sailors.
Festivals - there are many world-famous festivals throughout the year in Essaouira, notably The Essaouira Gnaoua and World Music Festival (annually in June) - a celebration of the mysterious music of the Gnaouas, the product of a mystic tradition with branches as widespread as Haitian voodoo and Brazilian Candomblé.
Fiona and her husband purchased the property after visiting Essaouira for a half term adventure with their two school age children. They have been married for 15 years and live in the UK near Guildford. Fiona's mother was born in Demnat, in the Atlas Mountains during WW2 and lived there with her family until she was 6 years old. Fiona grew up hearing many tales about the exotic and exciting country. When the opportunity arose to purchase a property in the country arose they couldn't resist the challenge. The photo is of Fiona, her mother and the two children in Place Moulay Hussan during their July 2015 visit to Dar Doughri.
Fiona Sutherland purchased this house in 2008
6 months before we purchased Dar Doughri the building was transformed from a two storey home into a 4 storey property with a panoramic roof terrace by an intrepid Englishman named Peter and his Moroccan friend Omar. We were looking for a spacious but well located property with a private and secure roof terrace that was well built and maintained that would not be blighted by the damp and noise that can pervade the riads within the Medina wall. Within 4 months of purchasing the house Dar Doughri was ready to receive guests and swiftly became one of the most successful rental properties in the area.
The close location of Dar Doughri near the Medina, beach and bustling town life combined with the sheltered but sun-drenched roof terrace and light and airy rooms made us fall in love with the property. The house is a balanced combination of modern living such as large windows, comfortable furniture and linens, and a fully equipped kitchen combined with traditional touches such as the huge tadelakt bath, pod shower, traditional salon with open fire place. Its location is in a quiet residential street allows our guests to feel immersed in Moroccan life and culture while enjoying the peace and privacy that is essential on holiday. Essaouira is a family friendly destination where their whole family can enjoy the culture, shopping, delicious food and the fabulous beach all through the year.
This was our second visit. We did not think it could be any better, but we stayed longer - 2 and a half weeks - so we found even more to enjoy.
Fouad arranged the taxi from the air[port and was there late in the evening to make sure we settled in.
Karima looked after us well. We had home-cooked meals which were tasty and at the just the time we ordered. The house feels like a second home !
We also found a few more local eateries and takeaways.
As always, the local people were very friendly, and seemed pleased that we
spent time with them.
All in all, another great holiday.

My wife and I have, for many years, rented houses in various parts of the world using Homeaway Holidays. While none have been disasters some have been better than others. Some owners can embellish the facilities and comforts on offer and we all know that photos can lie. However,Dar Doughri is every bit as good as the description states and the photos are an accurate depiction of all the rooms.
On our previous visits we have rented riads within the medina but Dar Doughri has facilities which are excellent but also has the benefit of an extremely peaceful location. The medina is only a five minute walk away and the road to the Bab Doukala has some very good bakeries, coffee shops which are well worth a visit. Also, the area to the east of the house on the road which leads to the temporary home of the fish market and the Jewish cemetery is worth a trip.
In the opposite direction a ten minute walk will bring you to the beach.Should you feel hungry at the end of an invigorating march along the sand then the restaurant Tamouziga will provide a splendid lunch -the menu on the board shows the catch of the day. There are sunbeds for those who wish to have a snooze after a long, leisurely meal.
After a hard day walking, eating and generally enjoying yourself it is a pleasure to return Dar Doughri.
All the rooms are bright and airy with comfortable furnishings. The kitchen is also very well equipped should you wish to make a quick snack or prepare your own breakfast .Karima was very attentive and kept the house spotless and Fouad,a most jovial fellow, was always available should he be needed.
I have no hesitation in recommending Dar Doughri to anyone visiting this most pleasant of holiday destinations.
My family and I stayed in this lovely house in Essaouira for 5 days in August where we had a great holiday. Fouad met us at midnight at the property after we got a taxi from Marrakesh Airport. Immediately we were impressed with the beautiful decor and spacious layout plus spoiled for choice with bathrooms.
Everything was clean and ready for us and the house looks very well looked after.
We opted for Karima to come and make breakfast for us each day ( liaising in French was the best way ) which was a lovely way to start the day. This could either be eaten on the roof terrace or in the lounge.
Fouad was a great asset and fantastic at organising anything we wanted to do
- he always came over to the house very quickly once we phoned him. He arranged a 2 hour camel ride for the 5 of us at the stables in Diabat, which we all loved and they sent a car to collect us ( included in the price ). He also arranged a berber massage for my daughter and me which was so relaxing - also at a reputable place.
Each day we enjoyed walking into the old town which is only 10 minutes away and finding different restaurants to eat in. We found the shops were cheaper here than in Marrakesh so well worth stocking up on gifts in Essaouira.
Due to it being quite windy we spent a couple of late afternoons on the beach when the tide was coming in which was good fun ( this minimised the amount of dry sand blowing around ).
I would definitely recommend this house to friends or family.
The house is ideally situated away from the hustle and bustle but within a few minutes walk of medina and beach. The accommodation is exactly as described and the services of Fouad make life a lot easier. We had breakfast and one evening meal cooked by Karima who is really sweet and this saves any shopping and cooking as eating out is reasonable. We really enjoyed haggling in the souks which are a lot more laid back than in Marrakech and seeing the fish market in full swing. Terrace is spacious and private but we didn't spend much time there as weather was a bit misty. We enjoyed out time here and wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone .....
My husband and I had a lovely week at Dar Doughri. We spent lazy days wandering around the Medina and the harbour or just sitting watching the locals going about their business. Everyone was very friendly and we never felt pressured to buy anything. We hired bikes for a couple of hours from a place near to where the camper vans park. They were in good condition and reasonably priced and the owner let us take them away without even paying a deposit. Karima was lovely and cooked us some delicious meals and we never went hungry for breakfast. We enjoyed sunbathing and having breakfast on the terrace. Fouad was very helpful if we needed anything. All in all a very enjoyable and relaxing week. (We did have the "moroccan funny tummy" but luckily it only lasted about 24 hours). We would recommend DD to our friends and hope to stay again one day.
We visit Essaouira with 2 families, 4 adults, 4 children and 2 babies and found enough room for every one. The house is clean an hold in traditional style. The local team ist very good and professional. The lunch is good the breakfast the best we had in Marocco. The house is close to the medina and about 10 minutes walk to the beach. We would recommend it to families.
