As you can see from the previous reviews this lovely house is very well equipped and we stayed only for a long weekend and did not have the time or the weather to take advantage of everything. We were 8 adults who try to get together annually and this house was perfect, which unfortunately the weather wasn't! You don't go to Ireland for the weather but the Craic! Rooms were comfortable, fire a godsend and the views spectacular. We enjoyed our stay here very much and would come again. Also recommend a trip to skellig Michael, where dolphins played around our boat, and we saw puffins, seals and gannets. Memorable weekend.
This was awesome. My family of 7 and my father's family of 3 met up for a week's vacation in the Ring. The house comfortably slept 10 and we could have squeezed a few more in! We had visions of doing a lot of sightseeing, but once we got to the house, our plan was overtaken by relaxing days at the beach. The house has a fabulous view of Kenmare Bay, the house is laid out where the front porch, kitchen, conservatory, living room and dining room all have full views of the bay. What makes the house even more perfect are all the "extras". Full size dryer in the shed, 2 kayaks (1 and 2 person), various sizes of wetsuits, body boards, a gas grill, gulf clubs and I think I even saw some fishing poles. The house is about a short 10-min walk to the local beach, which is where we spent most of our time taking the kayaks out of. And at dusk, the whole family took part in the local nightly traditions of pier jumping at high tide. This was one of the kids highlights of the week. At high tide, the locals and vacationers (of all ages!) would gather at the pier and demonstrate their acrobatic skills. Dozens of people each night. the local area i very quaint with some nice restaurants, cafe and tea/cakes. There are also 2 more surrounding beaches, about 10 min drives as well which were nice to visit. One has a beach bar (Carroll's Cove) which makes for an all-inclusive beach package! Just make sure you bring the kayaks! (shed has car tie downs as well).
House also makes for nice quick trips around the Ring, It's location breaks the ring up in half. EAsy trip to Skellig Bay, up to Lady's View and then over east to Sneem/Kenmare. And you can avoid all the tour bus traffic!
The owners were fabulous. Very welcoming, responsive and attentive to our questions and needs. I can't say anything more than if you are vacationing in the Ring of Kerry, this house is the only place you should stay. Absolutely perfect!!
Celebrating my husband's 70th birthday, our four adult children joined us at this lovely house for idyllic days of hiking on the Kerry Way and in Killarney National Park. The house is beautifully decorated with inviting views out each window. But perhaps more importantly, the hot showers, good internet connection, and comfy beds were perfect! We enjoyed cooking simple meals in the nicely designed kitchen, then playing card games at the big dining table- -late into the night. All of us were delighted by Caherdaniel's shops and pub (a 5 minute drive from the house): Freddy's, for a quick grocery stop; Sugarshack Cakery for tea, sandwiches, and sweet treats; The Blind Piper pub for terrific fish dinners, hot soups, brown bread, and Guinness. Just down the road from the village is a beach with low tide access to the hauntingly beautiful Abbey Island. And don't miss the nearby village of Sneem- -postcard pretty with mmmm good scones at Kelly's Bake Shop. This is a really wonderful house in a great location.
We have a large family that includes both teenagers and toddlers, so taking a family vacation that makes everyone happy is a challenge. In July 2012, we spent a month in Ireland, and we all agree that our one-week stay in this house was the best vacation we've ever had! The house is beautiful, roomy and clean with all the modern comforts you'd want – fully equipped kitchen, 2 washers and dryers, outdoor shower for post-beach rinses, large charging station for U.S. electronic items, and free wifi. For night time entertainment, there’s nothing like sitting outside and watching the stars in a pollution-free sky, but if you tire of that, there’s also a big-screen TV, ample selection of books, games and movies, and a fireplace for chilly nights. The house also includes some great amenities that enabled us to fully enjoy the peace and incredible natural beauty of the surrounding area, including use of beach towels, kayaks, fishing poles and wetsuits. The caretaker, Kathleen, who lives locally, is a delightful person who is eager to help and offer suggestions of where to eat, visit, etc. Though the owners are not local, they were readily available via email and phone and they made a point to check in with us before, during and after our stay to make sure all was going well.
Our family of 2 adults and 8 children was quite comfortable in the space, and we think it's a great size for smaller-sized families to gather for a reunion or to go away with friends. The location is simply incredible. We had originally planned on touring the south of Ireland during our stay, and though we did drive the beautiful ring of Kerry a couple of times, we ended up rarely leaving the immediate area, because we truly couldn't tear ourselves away from the beach and fun things to do at and around the house. Our younger ones rolled down the front hill, made friends with the cows in the back and visited the sheep down the road. Our older boys fished, swam, hiked and ran through the back fields. Our teenager girls went horseback riding on the local beach and took extensive walks through the area. All of us spent many happy hours at the local Rath beach, napping, reading, swimming, fishing and kayaking, as well as on the hills behind the house taking in the amazing view. My husband and I enjoyed every minute of it, relaxing and bonding with our kids, and delighting in the local towns around Caherdaniel. It was truly the vacation of a lifetime, and we'll cherish the memories forever.
Perfect family holiday destination. Nine of us (four adults, five kids) spent a week at the house in Caherdaniel and a marvellous time was had by all. It was a long time since I'd been to that part of Kerry - and it was as scenically spectacular as I remembered. The house comfortably accommodated us all including the 3 teenagers and all their stuff - it was immaculately clean with a spacious family room with all mod-cons, great showers. Views were amazing - house (with outside seating) overlooks a bay which has a little beach (with jetty for kids to dive off) 10 mins walk away. Derrynane beach is just around the corner (7 mins in car) - best beach with lifeguards and lots of families and water sports hire. Two Kayaks (1 single, 1 double) and life savers (jackets) were provided in the large garage. Kitchen (with plenty of utensils etc) was perfect for a large family. Hill at the back - with incredible views - is well worth climbing in an afternoon but wear walking socks to protect your legs from the gorse (bitter experience). If you're eating out - the Blind Piper in Caherdaniel is a vibrant family-friendly busy pub with very friendly staff and great food - make sure to try the Chorizo and Spinach soup. Food elsewhere in other villages and towns was average to poor and almost always hilariously overpriced - except for Caherciveen which had some good spots on the high street. So stay local and have a pint before heading back to the house after a day on the beach - but remember to book for dinner as it can get very busy with young hungry families (lunch not so busy). Freddies shop (opp Blind Piper) will have most of what you'll need for day-to-day top-up supplies. It's an incredibly beautiful part of the world, very relaxing (despite five kids). Us grown-ups sat outside early every morning (while kids exhausted from kayaking slumbered) to sip fresh coffee, stare out across the stunning bay and chat - simple pleasures don't get much better than that. Highly recommended.
A few weeks ago, our family went on an absolutely fabulous vacation to Ireland. We stayed at this beautiful family home perched on a hillside with magnificent views overlooking the ocean. The house is very spacious, extremely clean and includes all the modern conveniences of home. The house is stocked with family games, DVD’s and access to the Internet. However, to be honest, we rarely took advantage because we were always out on some adventure or on a walk down at the beach. There is a local beach about a 5 min. walk from the house and several others in the immediate area. A short drive down the street, are two local pubs, both full of local charm and good food. We especially enjoyed the seafood chowder at one of the pubs.
Keep in mind the side road that the pubs are on because down that road you will get to Derrynane National Park. This is a small park full of local history which includes a large beautiful beach. From this beach you can access by foot Abbey Island during low tide. On this small island is a centuries old Abbey ruin with many tombstones. This is certainly a local area that should be explored.
Back on the main road, a relatively short drive away you will run into the town of Waterville. This is a local port town. We took a quick stroll through the town and then a short drive onto Valentia Island. There we poked around the island which has views off to Puffin and the Skellig Islands on one side and the Dingle Peninsula on the other. These two destination points can all be done in a morning or afternoon, but we took our time and made it into a day trip. Our other longer adventures and certainly more “full” day trips included Dingle (a must see for beautiful countryside and coastline), Killarney National Park for its mountain ridges and country charm and of course Blarney, Cork to kiss that stone.
Other key towns to visit on your trip are Kenmare and Sneem. Sneem is a small town that has a great little bakery that we enjoyed sneaking into early in the morning on our trip to Killarney to get hot pastries and Kenmare for both shopping and late lunches.
We thank owners of this home for making this trip so easy to plan and for the fabulous accommodations. We experienced such a wonderful trip, full of great memories. This journey we took we will all remember for a lifetime. Thank you!
