A bit more 'true Hawaiian' than we anticipated
First the positive. The decorations were cute and the kitchen and bath functional, and the location was very central for walking into town. Equally, you can sit on the front porch and hear and see the ocean so in case of bad weather, as we had, it was lovely to sit outside and watch the ocean.
The owner also provided a well stocked kitchen, W/D, beach towels and fun items for water fun.
Now the other reality. While across the street from the ocean, a lot of traffic both local auto and foot traffic abound. Equally frustrating parking is allowed all along this section of the beach so there were always cars present (some with homeless folks camped there all day and night).
The cottage shows a significant lack of maintenance, dryrot is present in the front and inside woodwork, the floor in the bath unsanitary with missing grout and seemingly dryrot under the toilet area - honestly the whole bath needs to be redone. The grout in the kitchen could use a good scrub. The furniture was great 15 years ago but is really showing its wear - i.e. The couch really needs updating.
We stayed over a week here in March 2018 and during that stay the owner was not available we were notified he was out of country and could not be reached with no local contact - so if we would have had trouble with the house there was nothing we felt would resolve it. Much like the satellite TV connection that did not work from day 1. Lastly, don't leave your slippers or shoes on the porch as we had my husband's shoes taken assuming from a local/homeless in the area.
While alll this is true we made the best of the location and had a fun time in the Kapaa area.
The Cottage is scheduled to closed for repairs from June 8 through June 26, 2018
Modest cottage that’s centrally located for someone who wants to visit the whole island!
Kitchen is well equipped for homemade dinners. Speaking of dinners, foodland and safeway are just a couple of steps away from the cottage - bars and restaurants are also at walkable distance. The cottage is well equipped with many beach towels, snorkeling gear, boogie boards, and more! The place was generally clean, however we spotted some baby roaches which didn’t bother us... and to be expected given the location and proximity to the beach. We had trouble getting in touch with the owner throughout our stay but managed to get by ok. Overall, we would recommend it for a budget stay in a great location!
We loved our time here!!
Visited Kauai for the first time with my young daughter to celebrate her upcoming 10th birthday. This was a perfect spot to start our adventure in Kauai, and a great location to venture out from. Kapa'a Old Town is a sweet place to walk around. Larry's Beach Cottage is in a location that makes it very easy to get onto the walk/bike trail that runs for miles along the beach. The cottage has everything you need for cooking your own meals using the tasty ingredients available at the local farmers markets and Kapa'a stores. We'll definitely be returning to Kauai, and to this cottage. Thanks Larry!!
Close to the beach
We rented this place because of the rave reviews. It was very rustic which is fine as long as it is clean, which it was. The shower was great. Short trip to grocery store or shops. Just walk across street to beach. Weather was iffy enough to not have direct tv working, also couldn't watch movies as DVD wasn't plugged in and couldn't find anywhere to plug it in so just read. Front door is very hard to open and close due to moisture. Sheets on beds and the towels were great. Overall it was fine.
Good location very badly maintained and extremely dirty!
When we first showed up there was an extensive presence of cock roaches (dead and alive), dirty toilet, dirty dishes, the washing machine only half worked and the dryer took forever to dry our clothes.
It’s sad that someone would go to such extremes out of lack of responsibility. There is no smoking on the property but they continue to not only smoke inside the cottage but left a large amounts of butts outside the cottage. They where very off keel about leaving on time and left a note with the language of a drunken sailor. In addition they made a gallent effort to trash the cottage with intent and would not leave on time until an hour later. It took us twice as long to clean the cottage. The washing machine and dryer are brand new. We recently had the cottage fumigated. We have had problems with baby roaches but it is being contain. It would take more than a civil tongue to share the issues we encounter with these guests
Amazing location budget amenities
If location is important this is a great place. It is beach front and walking distance to restaurants and bars and you step off the drive way onto a running /walking path that runs along the ocean for miles. If you want luxury or deluxe this is NOT for you. A/C in only 1 of the 2 bedrooms, everything old and mismatched, bed not comfortable, bugs in the kitchen every time you turn on a light, TV not so great and neighbors behind house were loud. That said I would stay there again because of the location and privacy! If you are ok with rustic cabin and are more interested in being outside then inside this is a great place that is close to everything.
