This was my husband's and my first experience with booking a rental home instead of a hotel while traveling. We had a great experience here. Larry the owner is easy to reach if you need anything. The location in Kapa'a allows for easy access to the north and south sides of the island. I found the bed really soft and comfortable. The beach is right across the street. The home has some beach gear: chairs, noodle, body boards, etc. The neighborhood is quiet and with walking distance of restaurants and stores. We even saw a monk seal on the beach right across the street from the place! Would absolutely consider staying here again if I return to Kauai.
Our stay at Monakai Beach Cottage was very enjoyable. We honestly felt as if we were home. The kitchen was fully equipped. Beach chairs, buggie boards, cooler, and even sand mats were supplied to us. Larry was a great host. Not to mention, a really nice person. We enjoyed speaking with him. The cottage is located right in front of Baby beach, also known a Fuji beach. We even saw a monk seal. The location is great as it is central to get to both North and South of the island. We were also on the walking/bike path. We rented bikes and enjoyed our rides every day along the coastline. We would definitely stay there again if we return. If you'd like to hear the ocean while sleeping, this location is perfect. Mahalo Larry!
I wish I was there RIGHT NOW. I mean who wouldn't want to be in Kauai versus just about anywhere else?
For the price, the cottage was really wonderful. It sleeps five-- we were only two but could have enjoyed it with more for sure. Here are just some of the many things we loved most about it:
1- Larry! The host and owner of the property, Larry, has fantastic energy and is super on top of things. Just an all-around helpful and upbeat guy!
2- As soon as you turn onto the little street that leads you to the cottage you see the shore and the ocean and just feel a sense of "ahhh" relaxation :)
3- The cottage faces east so the sun rises right out the front bedroom and living room windows and the front porch so every morning we chose to let the sun naturally wake us up and didn't set an alarm. Like nature intended. Then when we returned at the end of the day, the sun was setting behind the cottage. Also lovely.
4- The sign on the cottage that greets you when you pull in the driveway sets the tone for the place which is: wonderfully old-school beach bungalow charm! All sorts of little touches that Larry has thoughtfully and endearingly dressed the walls and doorways and floors with truly made us feel immersed in that feeling of relaxed island life.
5- Larry provides tons of beach gear and we loved having the beach chairs and noodles to use on the sand and in the water. He has a big water cooler, too, so we stayed hydrated with fresh spring water, refilling bottles before we would leave each day.
6- The location is so central. It's a wonderful jumping off point for ANYWHERE on the island. The way the Kauai highway is, if you stay too far in one direction/towards the "end of the road" on either end, you'll have to drive for hours (that's plural) a day to go to let's say the north shore from the south (i.e. to Na Pali) or the south shore from the north (i.e.: to Waimea Canyon) , etc.
The only drawback was that while the property is literally across the slow and pedestrian/bike-friendly one-way, one-lane street from the beach and the ocean, there are some somewhat intimidating people who, for the three days and nights we were there, liked to hang out on, next to, or in their cars, cars they also seemed to live out of. But that IS their right as all of Kauai's beaches are public!
Aloha and mahalo from my mom and myself who left the Moanakai Beach Cottage as two very appreciative wahinis, one of whom (me) was almost crying from not wanting to leave!
This cottage is REALLY right on the beach! Do not book it if you're looking for luxury accommodations, though. It's quiet and comfortable, but it's not the Sheraton. We used the grill several times to cook dinner, and spent every morning sipping coffee on the front porch, watching the waves crash onto the reef at Baby Beach. Larry is very responsive and will fix minor issues quickly. The location really can't be beat. I think the chipped plates and bowls need to be replaced.
The Moanakai Cottage is in a great location, and essentially right on the beach but down a grass driveway so there's privacy. The cottage is set up with a lot of nice touches, including a fully operational kitchen with gas range, a washer and driver, coffee makers with filters, utensils. Also beach supplies and various odds and ends that provide a lot of convenience. This is our second stay at the cottage and hope to again soon. Highly recommended.
My husband and I enjoyed the week we spent in this home. It was very comfortable and included all we needed (even seasonings in the kitchen). In addition to the general home supplies, there were beach towels, beach chairs, coolers, and freezer packs. The washer and dryer, complete with laundry soap, was a bonus. The breezes coming in from the beach and flowing through the house kept it cool with the help of the ceiling fans. Air conditioning was available, but we never used it. We slept in the front bedroom with the window open to hear the sound of the ocean. The beach was at the end of the driveway, across a two-lane road. The house was walking distance to the nearest grocery store (Safeway) and Starbucks. It was also along a walking and bike path that took us near the shopping district in Kapaa and past other beach areas. We loved that the house was centrally located in Kapaa. We were able to easily drive to the North, South, and West island areas for site seeing and activities. Larry, the owner, was a delight to visit with and very accommodating. He truly wanted us to have a good stay.
