The Moanakai Cottage is in a great location, and essentially right on the beach but down a grass driveway so there's privacy. The cottage is set up with a lot of nice touches, including a fully operational kitchen with gas range, a washer and driver, coffee makers with filters, utensils. Also beach supplies and various odds and ends that provide a lot of convenience. This is our second stay at the cottage and hope to again soon. Highly recommended.
My husband and I enjoyed the week we spent in this home. It was very comfortable and included all we needed (even seasonings in the kitchen). In addition to the general home supplies, there were beach towels, beach chairs, coolers, and freezer packs. The washer and dryer, complete with laundry soap, was a bonus. The breezes coming in from the beach and flowing through the house kept it cool with the help of the ceiling fans. Air conditioning was available, but we never used it. We slept in the front bedroom with the window open to hear the sound of the ocean. The beach was at the end of the driveway, across a two-lane road. The house was walking distance to the nearest grocery store (Safeway) and Starbucks. It was also along a walking and bike path that took us near the shopping district in Kapaa and past other beach areas. We loved that the house was centrally located in Kapaa. We were able to easily drive to the North, South, and West island areas for site seeing and activities. Larry, the owner, was a delight to visit with and very accommodating. He truly wanted us to have a good stay.
We decided to visit again. Property 66571 was just perfect.
Centrally located and convenient. Host is great.
Lots of good restaurants in walking distance.
Rental bikes were a great idea. Ride out the front yard to restaurants or to the beaches.
We absolutely loved this place, a sweet, comfortable, cozy cottage -- it had everything we needed, was clean and well-maintained, was quiet, and the kitchen and bathroom were well stocked (the pictures are an accurate representation). The front porch is a great place to sit in the morning with coffee and watch the sunrise over the beach. And at night you can hear the ocean and get its breeze. There is a road between the property and the beach but it's rarely used -- folks walk and bicycle on it and it really doesn't feel like a road. The path along the beach is right outside your door, definitely use it to explore the area when you first arrive, and find the resident monk seal that pulls up on the beach most days. Larry the host was very good in responding about any questions we had (he lives in the main house on the property), and also went the extra mile; one of us left something behind when we checked out, and he mailed it right away.
We also really liked the community -- mainly residential, not many tourists. Grocery stores and restaurants are nearby (we highly recommend Verde). And Kapaa turns out to be a great central spot for exploring both the north and south parts of the island. It's an incredible place to experience, and when we plan our return trip, we will plan it around availability of the cottage. Enjoy!
My husband, 16 and 10 year olds, and I stayed at the cottage for 6 days. The cottage is very well stocked. We found thick, soft bath/beach towels in the bathroom. The shower is wonderful with great water pressure. The very clean kitchen has pots, pans, spices, a bottled-water dispenser, gas stove, and immaculate full-size refrigerator/freezer. Inside the freezer are reusable ice packs we used with the mid-size collapsible cooler found in the kitchen. The washer and dryer work great and we found laundry soap outside. The air conditioners in the back bedroom and living room worked very well at night, while open windows were great during the day. Although not "home" much, WiFi worked really well with DVDs and books throughout the cottage - fun reads and many Kauai guidebooks. On the porch was a full-size gas grill that we never used but was clean and seemed ready to go. There was a chest with lots of beach toys for younger children. The back bedroom had 3 boogie boards and I must mention the outside shower, which was great in taking off sand.
The beach in front of the cottage is great! It's shallow, warm and protected by a lava reef. A monk seal used the area to rest and it was neat to see one so close. The neighborhood is very quiet and as previously mentioned, you can walk to stores and restaurants....and Ono's where you will find the tastiest shave ice, acai bowls and halo halo. There are chickens and roosters that roam freely all over the place but you will find earplugs in the bathroom should you need them.
The location is also awesome as you are halfway to the north or south shores allowing exploration of all areas with minimal drive time. Traffic can be heavy heading north as it's one way each way but we were never in a hurry and enjoyed our adventures both north and south of the cottage.
As a final note, would like to thank and commend Larry for being outstanding. The first day there, we lost the cottage key. Although willing to pay for a replacement, Larry very kindly, thoughtfully, and graciously replaced it with several keys. My husband and I also chatted with Larry one evening and he was engaging, kind and helpful with island tips.
Now back in Alaska, everything seems like a dream.
Mahalo, Larry, for a wonderful place we dream of returning to!
My daughter, granddaughter & I stayed at Larry's beach cottage for 6 days in December. It was perfect for us. Across the road from a safe beach that's protected by a reef - the pool that is created is swimmable by adults at high tide, but is a little shallow when the tide is low. However, my granddaughter & I did some snorkeling in the pool and saw some fish and a sea turtle.
The cottage is located in a nice neighborhood within walking distance of grocery stores, restaurants etc. This is a real benefit as the traffic in Kapaa is very very heavy for hours during the day and it's much faster to walk a mile than it is to drive!
The cottage has everything one needs for a self-contained vacation and despite the fact that it rained for almost 3 days solid while we were there we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
In summary, the cottage lived up to our expectations (and then some) and we'd highly recommend it.
