About Pete Messick, Property Manager

We are from Cape May County New Jersey. We have our own business which takes all of our time in the summer. We have decided to offer our unique home for rental to allow our guests to see why we love Harborton and the Eastern Shore of Virginia

Pete Messick, Property Manager purchased this house in 2001

Why Pete Messick, Property Manager chose Eastern Shore Virginia

Coming from the Jersey Shore, we tire of the crowds during the summer and wanted a getaway which would provide respite for off season visits. This house seemed to fit all of our wishes, a secure location, fabulous view, a unique home with a real Coastal Living vibe. It is the polar opposite of our shore towns, which is what we were looking for....a place to relax and decompress

What makes this house unique

Although this is an older home, it is completely renovated with all the modern conveniences. We've kept the décor light and bright to offer a coastal flair. It's large enough to accommodate a houseful of family and friends, yet cozy enough when it's just the 2 of us!

My family, friends and I enjoyed our stay in this beautiful home which was very comfortable. The area was quiet and the few people we met were very friendly. The house had an abundance of room both inside and out. The rooms were all spacious and the views were beautiful. Due to the fact that the house holds as many people as it does and the store is not a quick ride a second refrigerator would have been wonderful to have as we made numerous trips to get ice but other than that we loved the waterfront access and spent most of our time outside enjoying the beach and surrounding islands.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your great review. My husband and I enjoy quiet weekends, and although we sometimes have quests, it's often just the 2 of us, so no additional refrigerator space is needed. We do however, have an extra freezer in the garage and will be sure to make that available for future guests! I appreciate your feedback. It's guests suggestions and comments that help us make improvements to the property to enhance our guests vacation. Thanks again and hope to see you again in the future!

Beauty, serenity in a quaint village

  • 5 of 5

This is a simply wonderful place to escape the stresses of daily life. We spent much of our time there relaxing and dining on the screened porch or sunning on the deck enjoying the view of the water listening to the amazing variety of birdsong. Shorebirds and songbirds are in abundance here. The home itself is lovely with beautiful views from every room, each flooded with light. We particularly liked the walkability of the town of Harborton. It is filled with lovely historic homes and a charming harbor where working fishermen depart from the docks each day. Sunrise from the master bedroom is breathtaking and we loved walking to the harbor in the evening to see the sunset over the Chesapeake Bay. On our walks we met a number of artists who live in the village and work from studios on their property. Beyond Harborton there's plenty to see on the peninsula. We drove only 20 minutes to get to a sport fishing dock on the Atlantic Ocean (Wachapreague) and watched fishermen weigh their catch (huge tuna) as we had dinner at a waterside restaurant. The historic town of Onancock is definitely worth a visit. If you have the time to devote an entire day, plan on exploring Chincoteague Island and spotting the wild ponies there, then spend the rest of the day at the beach on adjacent Assateague Island. Bottom line: If you're gathering your family or friends for a vacation that captures the beauty and serenity of unspoiled Eastern Shore life look no further than this listing.

Lovely waterfront home!

  • 4 of 5

My family, consisting of four adults and three children, thoroughly enjoyed a week-long stay at this beautiful home in quaint little Harborton. As nice as the pictures appear, they honestly do not do any justice to the ambiance of the home, property, or town. It is well and tastefully furnished and the scenic view is breathtaking. There is not much in town but there is a great history and very friendly people. Be prepared to take time to get places though as the nearby town of Onancock (lovely place to walk around for a little while during your stay) takes approximately 20 minutes from the house. We had an issue with the AC's in the main living area of the house during the stay but after contacting the property manager (on a Sunday) he managed to get a technician out fairly early the following morning and we had no further problems during the visit. The kitchen is nicely outfitted for cooking and there is a nice selection of books and magazines to use while there including two copies of one that I would highly encourage looking over early in your stay called "Off 13." We knew from the listing that there was no WiFi or landline but we were very unprepared for just how bad cell phone coverage in this town was (Verizon and AT&T services at least). Texts had occasional difficulty, voice was intermittent, and data connection was rare. The one part of me didn't mind but it did make looking up info about places we wanted to go difficult or if an emergency had come up... All in all, we thoroughly loved the place and would happily come back again.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review of our home. This is our first season renting after owning the property for several years so we tried to think of everything our guests might enjoy. We are aware of the sketchy cell service which seems to be widespread on the Eastern Shore. Our visits are confined to weekends only and we welcome the respite from a ringing phone, but we can imagine that lack of cell and internet service for a whole week might be an inconvenience, so we are immediately looking into options for phone and internet for next summer. It's the feedback from our guests that will enable us to make improvements to our home which in turn will enhance your vacation. Harbor Haven is truly a gem and we are glad you enjoyed your stay. We, along with our property manager, Pete Messick, thank you for your visit and hope to see you next summer!
