Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

One bedroom, one bath, galley kitchen, sleeps 4

Rejoice in Nature, relax your mind and rejuvenate your soul at this secluded private cottage on a park-like estate at the 2400 foot level of Mauna Kea in Hamakua. Thoughtful and artistic decoration add to the pastoral feel of this solar powered two story dwelling with carport and covered lanai. A galley kitchen with cook top and refrigeration will allow on site meal preparation. The wood burning stove provides warmth on cool evenings and the queen bed upstairs and foldout full size futon sofa downstairs encourage peaceful rest. Wireless high speed internet access allows you to connect with your mobile devices to entertainment and communication options. The Hamakua district offers easy access to the beaches of the Kohala coast, a glimpse into plantation era life in Honoka'a town and Laupahoehoe, hiking and exploration in Waipio valley, shopping and cinema in Hilo and enjoyment of the open vistas not available to many in the Hawaiian islands.

We, as your hosts, are willing to share our knowledge of photo-voltaic power (all structures on the property are off-grid) and provide you with tours of our working art studio (raku ceramics and jewelry are produced here and marketed in several galleries in the state) gardens and monumental lily pond. As decades-long residents of the Big Island, we are happy to share our love of this land and its people and provide guidance for touring.

About Randal Sutton

We hail from the Midwest and Pacific Northwest, have called Hawaii home for 34 years and chose this area of the Big Island for its peaceful natural beauty. Residing on the same property, but out of sight of the vacation cottage allows us to provide privacy yet permits immediate response to any questions or problems that may arise from visitors. Having a long experience with hosting friends and family prompted us to offer our home to those who desire a more personal look at life in Hawaii than a hotel could provide.

Randal Sutton purchased this cottage in 1994

Why Randal Sutton chose Paauilo

Paauilo mauka drew our interest and ignited our passion for its cool upcountry climate, vistas of Mauna Kea and rolling pastureland. A 'green' mentality and sensitivity to Nature is fostered by this off-the-grid area.

What makes this cottage unique

Since we are working artists and avid gardeners, we enjoy sharing our knowledge of the land and our enthusiasm for raku-fired ceramics. The art studio which is housed in a former horse barn on the property is a space to which we welcome visitors.

Dog friendly cozy cottage has everything you need

  • 5 of 5

Randal's cottage was perfect for a couple. It's well appointed and has a lot of nice touches like a wood burning stove (which we used every night), a nice private garden, and comfy bed. We were welcomed with fresh flowers throughout, a bottle of wine, and he also provides good coffee, a grinder and French press. There's bikes to use, books and games. No TV is a bonus! Highly recommend! Mahalo from Oahu locals!

Comfortable, Idyllic and Cozy

  • 4 of 5

Mele Manu was comfortable, located in an idyllic setting and made a cozy retreat during a heavy rainstorm the day we arrived. The fresh cut flowers and orchids were a nice touch. The kitchen was well appointed and had everything we needed to make our own meals. We particularly appreciated the kitchen essentials (such as oil, salt, pepper, etc.) that were available for our use. The bedroom is located in the relatively large loft and as you would expect the roof slopes into the sleeping area. Mele Manu is truly off the beaten path and is a wonderful retreat. The 1.4 miles of one lane road to get to the cottage may be intimidating for some but we found that after a few times back and forth it was relatively easy to navigate during the day as there isn't a lot of traffic on it.

Tropical Garden Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Charming, comfortable cottage near Honoka’a on the Big Island’s NE coast. Randal’s thoughtfulness was evident throughout the cottage: live and cut orchids, and flowers cut from the garden; lemons and oranges from their trees; robes and slippers; Occitaine bath products; and fresh coffee beans ready for the grinder. About 30 minutes east of Waimea, where there are a number of good restaurants and grocery stores, and close to the valleys, waterfalls, and tropical gardens along the Hamakua Coast, where the spirit of “old Hawai’i” begins. We stayed 5 nights, enjoying falling asleep to the sound of peepers and waking up to cool mountain air. The cottage is very comfortable for a couple and a great base for exploring the island. We’d strongly recommend it.

Off the beaten path and the grid but not far to sights and services

  • 4 of 5

A great option for artists, garden enthusiasts and anyone thinking of going off grid. Small cottage has all you need and most things you want. No tv, microwave, hairdryer or oven as these draw too much energy from the solar powered batteries. Toaster is a throwback to camping days. Close to Honoka’a for food and meals out and near Waipio Valley. Only 25 minutes to Waimea for other shopping and, from there, another 30 minutes to amazing Kohala beaches and resort area. It was clean, host was helpful and I’d recommend it to anyone who wants a respite from the hustle and bustle of the resort areas

The perfect combination of rustic and chic!

  • 5 of 5

This well-appointed cottage has everything you need in either a home base for exploring Waimei / Honokaa or a stay-in remote refuge for lounging around all day. The artist's touch is seen in every corner and I especially appreciated the beautiful fresh flower arrangements. We were warmed by the hearth prepared for our arrival by our lovely hosts and throughout the stay felt welcome and cared for on their beautiful estate.

Perfect Getaway

  • 5 of 5

This was a great place to stay to explore the Hamakua Coast of the Big Island.

Peaceful and very well thought-out cottage nestled in a park-like setting. The pictures really don't do the place justice because they leave out the sounds of the birds and the wind and the shifting light of the sun coming through the mist.

The cottage has everything you could possibly need for your stay. Well-supplied kitchen, nice bathroom, plenty of towels and sheets. Bikes, beach stuff, books, etc.

Probably a little less than an hour away from Kohala and North Kona beaches, 30 minutes to Waimea.

We would definitely stay here again, and wish this visit were longer.

Two things to keep in mind if you stay here: The property is located a couple miles up a fairly steep and winding single-lane road, so try to get there before dark. The closest town is Honoka'a, which has a lot of eating options, and if it is getting dark or if you feel you just don't want to go out again after settling in, think about bringing your dinner up with you. Hosts do provide a very nice snack basket, so not a big deal if you forget to bring food.

Great place to stay!

The Hamakua district is an historically agricultural and ranching area with plantation era towns, Buddhist temples, gift shops, cinema and vistas of the Pacific ocean and Mauna Kea, topped with observatories. Waipio Valley, with its spectacular overlook, black sand beach and taro ponds is a 13 mile drive away. Access to the valley is either on foot or via 4 WD vehicle (tour vans are available). Hiking beyond the valley along the coastline is challenging but visually rewarding. The Hawaiian Vanilla Company is 1 mile hike or drive away, can provide ecotours and has a gift shop. Waimea (Kamuela) is 20 miles away, nestled against the Kohala mountains and is the headquarters of Parker Ranch. The beaches of Kohala (Spencer beach, Hapuna beach and the resorts of Mauna Kea and Hapuna) are 32 miles by car. Laupahoehoe point, 20 miles by car, is a spectacular setting for a picnic at sea level and the former site of Laupahoehoe school where many lives were lost in the tsunami of 1946.
