Find shells, watch for porpoises and swim in the clear blue waters of the gulf. It's a short drive to several great golf courses, or shopping in gulf shores and the Foley (tanger) outlet centers. Dine at local favorites 'lulu's' owned by Jimmy Buffett's sister, Sassy Bass a local favorite , Behind the Pines great hamburgers Tachy Jacks less than a mile from the house, papa Rocko's for pizza and many more. At the west end of the pleasure island peninsula are the remains of Fort Morgan. One of the two forts that protected mobile during the battle of mobile bay, the fort dates from 1812. After touring the fort, there are opportunities to stroll the white beaches, swim, fish or crab, shell hunt, and sunbathe. This spot is a favorite with birdwatchers, who have been known to make rare sightings of migratory birds. A marina, golf course, and extra lodging are all nearby.

Recreate among endangered species and migratory birds. Over 4,000 acres of beach dunes, scrub dunes, fresh water marsh, salt water marsh, and maritime forest make up the Bon Secour national wildlife refuge just west of gulf shores. This coastal refuge is part of the central gulf ecosystem unit part of the migration route of the monarch butterfly, the refuge is also known for its more than 120 species of birds - making it a paradise for bird watchers. Along with birding, the refuge offers opportunities for hiking, swimming, photography, collecting sea shells, and boating. Fishermen enjoy both fresh and saltwater fishing.

Ride the auto ferry to dauphin island for a tour of the sea lab and historic Fort Gaines. Bird-watching and sunbathing are two of the favorite activities on this island paradise. A campground and hiking trail are part of the sanctuary, giving visitors opportunities to spend time observing the neotropical migrant birds and native wildflowers. In the spring, the park is visited by bird lovers anxious to view the annual bird migration.

very nicely painted and decorated with great kitchen.

I was there really to just get away from the business of life. It was rainy but that was fine. The house was very nice. I would suggest that it may be time to change out the mattress pads and pillows and perhaps get new couches or if they could be restuffed. They are pretty but a little worn. The property was very clean and that was the most important aspect for me. Thank you for a lovely beach experience.! i would definitely stay here again and again and again! Ft Morgan is awesome:)

A winters delight

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I just returned home from 6 plus weeks at Sun Place. We found it to be very comfortable, had everything needed for a long stay and most of all just a short distance to the beach. We enjoyed it so much that we are staying for 2 months next winter.

Great location close to the beach. Sun Place was very tidy with nice flooring and good furniture.

  • 4 of 5

We had a very good experience. The weather was great - especially on the first day. We found the provided instructions simple to follow and liked the house very much. The easy access to the beach was the greatest asset. People living in neighboring houses were very friendly as well. We particularly enjoyed watching the dolphins every day as they came really close to land. Fort Morgan was also very impressive and fun to see. We also enjoyed hiking the wildlife refuge.

The only few really minor minuses were the missing dishwasher brush and the missing laundry detergent. We also had some trouble with the lock to the shed downstairs. We had no problems with it the first couple of days, but after that we couldn't even get the key all the way into the lock. Not sure what happened there, but it wasn't a big problem for us.

This was our first time on the Gulf Coast and it was a really good experience. We didn't expect to see this many oil rigs so close by, so that was a new experience for us. I wouldn't say we exactly enjoyed looking at these oil rigs but it was certainly different.

Great place to stay- walk to the beach

  • 5 of 5

This was our first trip to Fort Morgan. Very relaxing away from the crowds. There were four adults and one pet in the home and we had more than enough room to move around and even cook when we were inside. Most of the time, however, was spent on the front deck or in the swing downstairs. The beach is just steps away and not crowded at all. Our lab loved being able to run around and play in the water. The beach buggy and chairs that were provided came in handy for our beach time. We did not have to leave the Fort Morgan area at all for those last minute items. There is a small grocery store about 3 miles away and the Sassy Bass is connected. The food was great there. We also ate a Tacky Jacks which is even closer at the marina. It 's a great place to sit on the water and watch the sunset. We visited Fort Morgan park and you can even take the ferry over to Dauphin Island. Great long weekend trip and we would definitely stay at Sun Place again.

A place of history, leisure and nature, the Fort Morgan peninsula extends like a long finger west of Gulf Shores, Alabama. If you're looking to get away from crowded beach bars and tacky souvenir shops, this section of the Alabama Gulf Coast is a good option. Much of the peninsula is part of a protected wildlife refuge, but many beachfront accommodations are available. You may have to drive to Gulf Shores to pick up major supplies, but it's well worth that small hassle to experience these pristine, sparkling sugar-white sands on your beach vacation.
