John bought Wilderness Haven in 1995. This classic fishing resort consisted of 5 cabins. He named each cabin after a different North woods animal: Loon's Nest, Fish Shanty, Bears Lodge, Wolves Den, & Moose Shack.
Owner/Manager JohnPrickette purchased this cabin in 1995
The local atmosphere is so friendly and unique. For a small town to have world class events such as the Fat Tire bike race in September or the Birkiebeiner Cross Country Ski Race in February, local theatre, street festivals, unique shopping, and all the outdoor activities make it not only desirable to visit, but also to live here!
We enjoy being on Spring Lake, where the fishing is always great. Being close to town (4 miles) has it's obvious perks!
Staying at A Wilderness Haven was so amazing. My wife and I were staying there the second week in September and stayed in the Loon’s Nest, which was a great place for a couple to hang their hat at the end of the day. The cabin was very clean and had everything you would need, with a great porch/patio to walk out on to look at Spring Lake and even some of the wildlife walking in late at night, along with lighting that trims the cabins at night. All the cabins have a great view of Spring Lake and also of the beautiful cabin grounds with an awesome large fire pit for many to sit around and roasting hot dogs or making s’mores. The ride into town is very quick with great access to a Market Place grocery store and a Super WalMart along with many great restaurants such as the Angler’s Bar and Grill, which has great fish and chips, but do understand that the restaurants do close earlier in the off season. We paid for a whole week and full access to a pontoon boat for fishing. As Spring Lake is not very big, it was a blast being able to walk around on a pontoon boat and fish more freely, but there are canoes, row-boats and kayaks that are always available for free with your stay. Fishing was great, especially on our last day. One previous group caught many crappies and we caught many sun fish. Many fish of all kinds can be caught on Spring Lake. We are very excited to come back and see John and Angie again at A Wilderness Haven again.
Wilderness Haven was the perfect place to reconnect with my family. I can't say enough good things about John, the owner. He is very knowledgeable and more than willing to share his information. The cabins face the lake and have a wonderful sunrise view!! After being at the cabin for four days, my initial thoughts about John, the cabins, the area where confirmed! Very welcoming, very safe for children. I would not have a problem if my wife wanted to take the kids there by herself. John would have their back and be there to take fishing or exploring or whatever they needed... We will be back over and over!
We have stayed in many places in the Northern Hemisphere and find this place to be one of the most enjoyable. Nature is so beautiful here...we learned about bears and animals and birds with guide and owner John. He took us on several walks through the woods behind the cabins. We also enjoyed having our own pontoon boat and enjoyed several fishing outings. Hayward was so close that we could run into Wal-Mart or go to so many really great restaurants, shops, spas and The Fresh Water Fishing Museum. Two days wasn't enough. We'll have to come back soon.
My husband and I just spent the long Labor Day Weekend in the Loon's Nest at Wildernass Haven. I don't think I have enough space here to tell all the great things about this place. The minute we arrived, John met us and it felt like we'd known him forever. And forever is how long I could simply sit and talk to him about all of his life's adventures. He makes the place. Our cabin was everything we needed...Bedroom, bathroom, living room and kitchen; and it was spotless. The pictures shown are exactly how it is, In fact, they don't even do the place justice. The price is fantastic and affordable for everyone. I've paid much more and gotten much less. We rented a pontoon for the day for what most charge per hour.(which John let us take it out a day and a half for one price) All the other guests were so nice and most told us that they come back every year, which we will be doing from now on. I cannot wait to take my whole family there, kids, grandkids and parents. I will tell you that I book through VRBO all the time. I've had good experiences and bad experiences, but this experience was the best. I booked only a day or two before we were leaving and only got in because he had a cancellation. So, needless to say, I looked at alot of places and I am so thankful that John called me back and we got The Wilderness Haven. We can't wait to go again.
My family and I really enjoyed our time at Wilderness Haven. We stayed in the Fish Shanty which has a porch overlooking Spring Lake. It was so peaceful and relaxing. Our grandkids (age 4 and 5) wanted to fish all the time. This is a great lake for fishing. Almost every time you throw out your line you will catch a fish. The owner, John, was a delight. He was so accomadating and enjoyable. He was a wealth of information. This is a great getaway. Very clean, well maintained and reasonable? We will be back.
We had a wonderful time at Wilderness Haven. John, the owner, is extremely kind and accommodation. The cabins are updated with full kitchens. They have boat rental for a low price. You can also bring your dog. Great Deal! We stayed two nights and had a great time out on the lake fishing. The loons sounded so beautiful! We both would highly recommend this resort to anyone looking for a vacation. Almost forgot to mention, John will do guided fishing tours, there’s kayak rental and ATV trails. LOTS TO DO! There is a ton of wildlife.
