Acadia Sunset Seaside Cottage is a 3-bedroom, 3-bath house right on the water with your own access to a private stretch of shore. It has a game room, reading room, and relaxing, screened-in porch in addition to living, kitchen, and dining rooms. It is well suited to accommodate multiple generations or a small group of friends, where you can both enjoy common rooms and preserve your privacy.
You can enjoy any of several cozy nooks to settle in with a good book. Or play ping pong with friends or family on a day at home. You are surrounded by gorgeous sunsets that you can enjoy in your private screened-in porch every evening. And you are steps away from your own private stretch of beach, where you can put in a canoe or kayak, beach comb for shells and sea treasures, or simply enjoy the view out to Maine's famous island-dotted shore, with the Nature Conservancy's Placentia Island in the distance, and Swan's Island just beyond. Every room has a water view and en suite bath. You are less than five minutes' drive from the Acadia National Park trails called Wonderland and Ship's Harbor, which bring you out to gorgeous rocky bluffs along the open ocean and Maine's famous rocky coast. A minute more and you're at Bass Harbor Head Light, the most photographed lighthouse on the U.S. East Coast. In five minutes you’re in Southwest Harbor with ample opportunities for shopping, dining, and boating; in two more minutes you’re hiking Acadia Mountain or swimming in Echo Lake; and in ten minutes you're in Bar Harbor, with its quaint shops, restaurants, whale watching, naturalist boating, sailing, deep-sea diving, Park tours, and many other opportunities.
Few locations in the United States can compare to the beauty and diversity of Mt. Desert Island (MDI) and Acadia National Park. Acadia National Park and its famous gateway towns are treasured the world over as some of the most beautiful spots “where the mountains meet the sea.” Ocean, lakes, mountains, miles and miles of hiking trails, dedicated bicycling and walking trails, gorgeous countryside, and the towns of Tremont, Southwest Harbor, Northeast Harbor, and Bar Harbor provide unlimited opportunities for relaxation and recreation. A beautiful, peaceful place by the water.
Acadia Sunset is a wonderful place to stay. The cottage is clean, comfortable and welcoming. The screened-in porch was a favorite place to relax, with views of Duck Cove and lovely ocean breezes. The cottage is well-stocked and has plenty of games, puzzles and books for those rainy days. The location on the "quiet side" of the island is ideal. None of the crowds, yet easy drives to anywhere you wish to go. It's the perfect place to stay.
for the animals...
this is a tricky review for me to write, as i’ve become a fan of the owners, and don’t want to affect their business (especially since they are animal rescuers as myself). but, i also want to be honest to other families who work hard all year and look forward to one vacation (also like me & my family) and expect the place they rent to be what it says.
although we'd not recommend this property (especially for people with young kids or elderly), we would recommend the owners. we had a handful of concerns upon arrival, but they worked hard to amend, and - for that - we are most grateful.
*we spent the first day cleaning (sticky floors, “hairs” in tubs & around toilets, unvacuumed carpets & rugs, and more), and - although we declined - they offered to buy us dinner. they also offered to send a cleaning staff out, of which we were most appreciative (and accepting).
*the beach steps were a bit misleading. in the original listing, we didn't read anywhere of them being so steep or numerous... nor crooked & overgrown. upon mentioning this concern to the owners, a gardener came out to trim back all of the overgrowth immediately, & we even saw a man out with a tape measure (guessing he was there measuring for a new flight of stairs?) the next day. we were glad we didn't rent kayaks either, as pulling them down a steep flight of beach steps would have been a bit challenging.
*bugs were also a problem (spiders, roaches, & earwigs), so that was unsettling. the owners did tell us these leggy creatures are common in maine, though we've been to maine for years and only had to swat at flies & mosquitos… and always *outside* the homes we’ve rented. never inside.
on a better note: the rest of the property summary listed is as it says, and a place worth visiting.
so, again, it's not the place for us, but all concerns were taken seriously, and addressed promptly.
please note: these folks run a horse rescue, and that right there tells me these are good people worth renting from.
thank you for having us peter & joy, and best of luck with the rescue.
having a voice for those with none, is true compassion.
We were disheartened to hear about Kate's experience halfway through their stay. As she noted, we immediately responded to remedy the situation as soon as we were notified. Our cleaning crew reacted swiftly and normally is consistently appreciated for their thoroughness, but nonetheless something was off that week so we've replaced the cleaner for this cottage and employed a safe bug preventive. While most of the 30+ families who visit every year also kayak in the cove, and don't have an issue with the stairs to the water, she is right that we took her feedback seriously and are now looking at additional investment there. We'll always continue to strive to exceed our guests' expectations and take measures to ensure you're happy with the experience.
Private, peaceful and very clean!
We had a great week at the cottage! It was spotless and well stocked with fresh towels and paper products. Peter and Joy have thought of everything. If you forgot to bring something, you can probably find it in the cottage! The beds were very comfortable. We had 3 couples in our group and each of us had our own bathroom. That was great! The upper level bedroom with the double bed has a gorgeous view to wake up to. It was great to have a washer and dryer available to use. We really appreciated the entirely screened in porch.
Peter and Joy were easily accessible and responded to emails quickly. The binder that they provided with information about the cottage and the area was very useful to us. We appreciated their recommendations of the good restaurants in the area.
Everyday we drove over to the Acadia National Park/Bar Harbor area. We went on a Whale Watch tour, a Lighthouse tour, and we hiked and biked. It's a beautiful place!
We are so glad you had a lovely visit and really enjoyed the cottage. Thank you very much for sharing your experience, and you're welcome back any time! Our best, Joy & Peter
Absolutely wonderful home.......
We thoroughly enjoyed our recent week in your seaside cottage.. Everything was exceedingly clean & neat..It is a lovely home & beautiful location....we have stayed at several other locations on the island ; this location is by far our favorite...hope to return next summer.
Quiet and peaceful!
We recently returned from renting this cottage on the quiet side. Each morning the fog would roll in and out. It was interesting to see how much the tide went out after a morning of kayaking. Beware-it is like 25 steps straight down to the water. We were easily able to maneuver the boats down and up with some effort! In the evening we would sit on the porch and watch the sun set over the water. The screened in porch was a blessing as the mosquitoes were huge! The cottage has everything you need. If you are cooking for a large crowd you may think about bringing an extra non stick frypan. There are several very small ones. The others, the food really sticks. We had plenty of bath towels, starter paper towels as well as toilet paper. It was easy to travel to the busy Bar Harbor side in under 30 minutes. There is grocery, liquor, and restaurants all close as well as some nice hikes. We definitely would book again if we decide to return to the area. Joy and Peter were very easy to deal with and accommodating. They respond quickly and can give many suggestions about what is local.
Thank you, Lynda! We're so glad you enjoyed the cottage amenities. (Those nonstick pans seem to be an annual consumable - we'll keep replacing them!) We really appreciate your sharing your experience and glad those local tips helped you enjoy your stay! Welcome back any time. - Thanks, Joy & Peter
