An enthusiastic New York and Harlem resident, always ready to give the inside scoop and recommendations on Harlem or NYC. Very involved in the neighborhood. A product, landscape and interior designer with numerous awards and items in national museums. In fact, the building has also been published in several magazines and appeared in films. A world traveller, as I flew for Pan Am for over 7 years. Partner at the popular Harlem Shake, a restaurant I designed.
Dennis Decker purchased this apartment in 2000
This building is typical of the historic neighborhood. I was impressed that it still retained so much of its original form and material. However, I was very impressed by the atmosphere of the block, with friendly, open and involved neighbors.
The quiet friendly tree-lined street, proximity to express subway- only 4 stops to Times Square, closeness to neighborhood coffee shop and historic park, as well as the 125 St. corridor and Central Park.
I actually love sitting on the front stoop while having a coffee or a glass of wine. I love seeing the relaxed street life going by, and being a part of it. Since my block is dominated by private brownstones, rather than apartment buildings, it has a friendlier, small town feeling than most other neighborhoods.
Harlem Hideaway was a fantastic choice for our home away from home. Dennis is amazing and was helpful throughout the entire process. We are sad to be leaving and cannot wait to return.
We had a great time @ the Red Rooster our first night and the breakfast wraps @ Cafe Latte are a must!
To the core: we are working out another stay at Dennis¨ house for this year.
Do you need more information? With my wife we were there last June, a two weeks stay in the wonderful Harlem. As many times, a house is a projection of his owner and this house is a masterpiece. Also it is his home and that do a big difference. Dennis is helpful at any unusual need and always ready to add much more than expected.
The parlor is well equipped, confortable, artistic. It is homely.
The block is residential and around the corner are markets, stores, delis and street food. The buses stop is at 100 meters, an excellent option for sightseeing the city. The subway station at three blocks, quick to the south.
I shall not take your time writing about NYC; everywhere the information is available. Perhaps I can tell you something about Harlem. At evening, when we return from a full day walking on the streets, physically exhausted and emotionally plenty, arriving to Harlem was like to an oasis, where the life slow down to senses and spirits. The Harlem´s people made us feel as in our own neighborhood and Dennis¨ house as at our home.
Our overall experience was wonderful!
Dennis was warm and welcoming! The Harlem hideaway is clean, comfortable and stylish. It's conveniently located near the 2/3 express train which makes getting to lower Manhattan a breeze. 12 minutes to Times Square! There is a lovely little shared backyard or if you want to watch the neighborhood you can sit on the front stoop.
We explored the surrounding neighborhood and found no shortage of gems that make Harlem unique and special. There are a number of restaurants in the area - we loved cocktails at Dirty Taco, chicken & waffles at Amy Ruth's and my son's favorite was burgers, fries & shakes at Harlem Shake.
After long days of walking the Hideaway was a comfortable home away from home. We slept well each night.
Dennis was able to give suggestions, fix our air conditioner and print out tickets for shows. His love for the building and neighborhood is apparent!
Our stay at the Harlem Hideaway was wonderful. Property is beautiful and Dennis is terrific. We will definitely stay in this unit again on our next trip back to New York!
Thanks again Dennis!

First let me say that my love for New York is indescribable. This was my 8th yearly visit, and each year I try to stay in a different neighborhood so that the experience is something new every time. The Harlem Hideaway parlor apartment has captured my heart and I am hopelessly smitten with everything about it. The location is perfect. Just a few short blocks away from the northernmost entrance to Central Park, and a mere three blocks from the subway. The red line 2 or 3 trains (express) can get you to Times Square in 16 minutes. Don't worry about anything you may have heard about Harlem being a questionable neighborhood. It's not. People are friendly, and Harlem is really becoming very 'gentrified' and trendy. There are loads of bars and restaurants nearby, a few supermarkets and delicatessens for fresh food, an excellent wine store about 100 meters away. The apartment itself is on the ground floor of a quintessential New York brownstone building, so you get to feel like Carrie on Sex and The City. Dennis, the owner is the nicest, most accommodating landlords I have met on my extensive travels, and he will give you the absolute royal treatment from the moment you enter the building. No really, you'll feel as though you are the most important person ever to have stayed there. He lives upstairs and is always available if you need anything at all. The eclectic and delightful decor inside reflects his work as a designer, and the photographs of the apartment are more than true...if anything not doing it justice. It's fully equipped with everything you need to cook, rest or relax after a a big day in Gotham. The Museum of the City of New York to the east on 5th ave is within walking distance, as is the Riverside Church and Morningside Park to the west. Thanks Dennis, this is my new home in New York...thank you for everything and for the coming through on my special request for lots of snow. (The blizzard on 23rd/24th January was the 5th most intense in New York history!)
We were more than satisfied with the parlor apartment and it made for a fantastic base for visiting NYC. Well appointed with an artistic flair and well sized for our family if 4. The beds were very comfortable and it was quiet for a good night's rest. The neighborhood is safe, friendly and there are various cafes and restaurants within a short walk. I can highly recommend this property for anyone looking for a more unique experience than found in a hotel. We would definitely come back.
The very pretty and stylishand clean apartment lies in a nice quiet street. It has everything you wish to have. It was even better I imagined. Dennis was a very pleasant owner. I would say everything was top!!
Harlem Hideaway is on West 119th Street in Harlem, New York City. Marcus Garvey Park is just over a block away, with a public swimming pool, and the famed Central Park is only 9 blocks south of this rental. There is a grocery store and laundromat within 2 blocks, and the nearby Lenox Avenue offers a variety of restaurants and convenience stores. Also on Lenox Avenue, you will find Harlem Shake and the Red Rooster Restaurant, staples of Harlem. The West 125th Street shopping corridor includes Apollo Theater, Studio Museum of Harlem and major stores, such as H & M and Marshall’s, and on Frederick Douglass Avenue you will find restaurant row.
