An enthusiastic New York and Harlem resident, always ready to give the inside scoop and recommendations on Harlem or NYC. Very involved in the neighborhood. A product, landscape and interior designer with numerous awards and items in national museums. In fact, the building has also been published in several magazines and appeared in films. A world traveller, as I flew for Pan Am for over 7 years.
Dennis Decker purchased this apartment in 2000
This building is typical of the historic neighborhood. I was impressed that it still retained so much of its original form and material. However, I was very impressed by the atmosphere of the block, with friendly, open and involved neighbors.
The quiet friendly tree-lined street, proximity to express subway- only 4 stops to Times Square, closeness to neighborhood coffee shop and historic park, as well as the 125 St. corridor and Central Park.
I actually love sitting on the front stoop while having a coffee or a glass of wine. I love seeing the relaxed street life going by, and being a part of it. Since my block is dominated by private brownstones, rather than apartment buildings, it has a friendlier, small town feeling than most other neighborhoods.
We enjoyed NY, for an important part due to your charming, comfortable and quiet apartment (and its friendly and helpful landlord).
We certainly will advice friends who plan to go to The Big Apple to see whether you have plavce for them.
And may be one day we will be back in your city.
Very clean and VERY quiet. We enjoyed the location and we were connected to everything in NYC with a short subway ride (various lines within several blocks). Central Park was an easy 10 minute walk. There were also a number of places to eat nearby. We walked in the area after midnight and felt very safe. We didn't use the kitchen facilities as we were out so much, but did put fruit and yogurt in the large frig. Dennis was very friendly and available, and eager to provide us with information about the area. Highly recommend the Harlem Hideaway
Dennis was very helpful/ welcoming and we enjoyed all his suggested spots. The hideaway was clean, very comfortable bed, great music playing on iPod and nice candle lit when we arrived . Easy access to subway and we felt safe late at night coming back from downtown . Nice small kitchen and sitting area where we enjoyed making coffee and relaxing . We would highly reccomend the hideaway !!!
Our stay at Harlem Hideaway was great, apartment perfect for two with all that we needed. Dennis was brilliant, with fantastic advice.
WiFi was good - very helpful for last minute planning !
We both enjoy our stay in Harlem, feeling comfortable and safe well into the night.
Our suggestions to get started ;
- First day book the Circle Line Tour, gives you chance to get a real feel for the city.
- Buy a 7-day Metro card (a must!)
- Book tickets for 'Top of the Rock', for a late afternoon to watch the city light up.. not Empire State as that is one of the amazing things to see in the city!
- Don't book too much before going, Dennis has plenty of good suggestions
Thank you Dennis !
Our stay in Dennis Apartment has been really really beautiful and Dennis, of course, is a super nice host.
We arrived a bit late, almost midnight, although he'd been very warm and friendly. The room was very cool and cozy, with the candles light on and a very pleasant fragrance inside.
We fall in love with Harlem, a real American place, not touristic, and most important safe with all the necessary to reach Manhattan.
We definitely suggest Harlem Hideaway! :)
The building is beautiful & very well maintained. The studio is gorgeous & had everything I needed to feel at home. Dennis was so helpful & had excellent advice about everything from transportation to & from the airport, to great restaurants in the neighborhood. People in the neighborhood were friendly and welcoming, too! I would definitely recommend staying at Harlem Hideaway!
My wife and I were in town for the weekend to see some Broadway shows and to eat too much before summer was over and our work responsibilities reclaimed all of our energies. Dennis was a fantastic host and in addition to being available at all hours and providing us with a cool and comfortable place to rest our heads (the studio was perfect for our needs), he also turned us onto Harlem Shake and Red Rooster - fabulous eateries within easy walking distance. We will certainly be back again and highly recommend the Harlem Hideaway. Thanks, Dennis.
