Our Wonderful Vacation in Maine

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a great time at the Chalet in the woods on Panther Pond. We felt right at home from the time we arrived and were all sad to leave at week's end. Great location to do other things in the area, comfy house, incredibly quiet and peaceful, sandy, kid friendly beach area and use of canoe's and a rowboat. What else does one need on a family trip? The hosts are great and very thorough explaining everything to us upon arrival. House was very clean with everything you need for a week's stay. Kids loved swimming, fishing, canoeing and just exploring the woods in the area. All in all maybe our best family vacation spot yet!

Gorgeous and Very Enjoyable

  • 5 of 5

We had a blast at Dee's Chalet. The cabin was stocked with everything we needed, and our host, Nancy, even had pie and ice cream waiting for us when we arrived. The cabin was comfortable, the beach delightful, and there were canoes and a rowboat available for use. We enjoyed exploring the pond and the surrounding woods. Even on the few rainy days, there were games to play in the cabin. My ten year old daughter was enchanted by the whole experience. Hopefully, we'll be able to return next year!

A beautiful spot!

  • 5 of 5

We just got back from a wonderful week at Nancy and Don's place at Panther Pond. The dock leads you to a beautiful lagoon-like setting filled with aquatic life and lily pads. The atmosphere calls for relaxation and you can just feel the stress float away as you sit by the dock watching the dragonflies buzz by. The chalet is more than comfortable and has everything that you possibly need. Nancy and Don are welcoming and generous hosts and are very informative. Although there is a television at the chalet, none of us turned it on, not even our teens! This vacation will remain one of the more memorable ones as it allowed the 4 of us to catch up on each others' lives before the stress of school and work set in in a few weeks. Thanks Don and Nancy for sharing your piece of paradise with us!

A beautiful quiet spot!

  • 5 of 5

Nancy and Don are warm and friendly hosts who welcomed us with open arms to their piece of paradise on earth. The chalet is on quiet Panther Pond with a dock that leads you to a lagoon-like spot filled with lily pads and aquatic life. The peacefulness and beauty of the pond did its trick as we felt the stress of city life float away from us. The chalet was very comfortable and had everything that we needed. Although there is a television available, none of us watched it, not even our kids!! This vacation will be a memorable one as it allowed the 4 of us to relax and get caught up in each others' lives before the madness of work and school set in in a few weeks. Thank you, Nancy and Don, for sharing your place with us.

Hideaway cottage on the side of a beautiful lake

  • 5 of 5

We chose the location because our son was attending a nearby Scout camp - and what a lucky find!

The cottage has a retro (1950's) style and was equipped with every possible thing we could need - right down to sellotape and plastic storage boxes. It was like a home from home. There is masses of space upstairs in the bedrooms and a good sized living area downstairs so it was very comfortable to stay in and read. The TV channels were limited (which we didn't mind at all as most US TV is unwatchable) and internet access was intermittent - but we coped with that through using the numerous local venues having free wi-fi. The owners provide canoes and a row boat and there is access to swim on the lake from a private beach which we made considerable use of during our stay as it was SO hot! And our son caught a sizeable fish in the lake during his weekend off, so he was very happy.

There is plenty to do in the area so lots of day trips out and there are plenty of amenities (restaurants, supermarkets, laundry, cinema etc.) within a short drive. Can particularly recommend "the Good Life" nearby for awesome salads and good breakfasts. Also the "Black Bear cafe" just outside Naples is worth a short drive for food and atmosphere (and live music some evenings).

The owners provided lots of local information as well as recommendations and our week just flew by. The only complaint - and this is probably insurmountable - was the population of mosquitoes which was virulent. It would have been nice to sit outside (especially in the heat) and take full advantage of the picnic table and BBQ but we tried it one evening and were just eaten alive.

A lovely, lovely week which we hope to repeat sometime.

Fantastic family getaway!!!

  • 4 of 5

The house hidden in the woods on the lake was exactly what my family and I were hoping for. It had everything we needed: dishes, linens, canoes, and grill. The fire pit was a hit with the kids for s'mores. Everything was very nearby, including shopping, markets, lakes and boating. We had the best time. Nancy and Don were very accommodating. Thanks again!! We'll be back next Summer.

Waterfront seasonal chalet nestled in the woods with dock and lake access. Some of the best fishing on Panther Pond is in the calm protected cove in front of the chalet. Natural sandy beach at the opening of the cove, great for children because it gets deep so gradually. Canoe available for use and boat ramp avail for launching your own boat. Trails through the woods for hiking or biking on the woods road. Quiet, peaceful retreat for families to reconnect. Other activities include barbecuing on the deck, with TV, DVD, WIFI available. Great central location for many other activities. Only 30 minutes from outlet shopping in Freeport, ME, or 45 minutes from Conway, NH. The White Mountains near Conway, NH offer many activities. Twenty minutes away is Oxford, ME, home of the Oxford Plains Speedway stock car racing. Portland is 30 minutes away with lighthouses, forts, museums, beaches, wonderful fresh seafood restaurants, and shopping in the 'Old Port'. Also in Portland, is Casco Bay Lines with many ferry rides out into the Casco bay stopping at many of the Islands. Or from South Freeport you can take a ride on a working lobster boat going to Eagle Island to see the museum home of Admiral Perry. Grey Wildlife Park is 5 miles away and is a wonderful place to view Maine's wild animals up close, great for children. Also in Grey is Cole Farms restaurant with down home cooking. Windham is 9 miles away featuring Seacoast Fun Park, with disc golf, miniature golf, adventure trails, a zip park, a sky swing, and race cars. Point Sebago Golf in Casco, 10 miles away, is an 18 hole championship course featuring 4 sets of tees for different skill levels. Naples and Long Lake, about 13 miles away, offers boat rides, sea plane rides and a ride on the Songo River Queen, an old fashioned paddle boat. The location is very central for taking day trips to Saco, water park, York Wild Kingdom, Old Orchard Beach and the Palace Playland. Also going north up coastal Route 1 is Boothbay Harbor with boat rides out in the harbor to see seals, whales and much more.. Come to Maine, 'the way life should be' for a memorable family vacation.
