Enjoy all of the comforts of home at this spacious 3 bedroom/2 bathroom lakefront cabin. When you enter the cottage, it is hard to overlook the welcoming atmosphere of the living area. It offers a one level floor plan featuring a living room with vaulted ceiling and large windows that provide a breathtaking view of the beautiful Big Manistique Lake. A door wall opens up to a large deck that faces the water so that you can start your day with a brilliant sunrise or relax in the evening to the comforting lull of an unforgettable Michigan sunset over the water. There is even a game closet with various board games for hours of indoor fun and entertainment. Also included for added convenience, there is full size washer and dryer that you may use during your stay at no additional cost. We've provided everything that you and your guests would need to make your vacation experience a time to remember.
Big Manistique Lake is 5 miles across, over 10,000 acres, and is the 2nd largest inland lake in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The Big Manistique Cottage is located just north of Cooks Bay, on the Western side of Big Manistique Lake. There is a private dock on the property with an easily accessible launch site nearby. You may choose to bring your own boat, or take advantage of the boat rental and delivery service that is just a short drive away in the quaint little town of Curtis. If you decide to rent a boat, it will be delivered right to the cabin dock, the only thing you have to remember are your bathing suits and fishing poles!
Other outside amenities include both propane grill and a charcoal grill, a fire pit with seating area (folding chairs can be found in the game closet for use since there are no permanent seats around the fire pit), and plenty of private outdoor space for sunbathing, yard games and any other outdoor activities that you may want to enjoy.

Tahquamenon Falls: 1.5 hours northeast
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Fish Caught: Walleyes, Northern Pike, Smallmouth Bass, Yellow Perch, Rock Bass, Brook Trout, Lake Herring, Bluegill, Pumpkinseed and Largemouth Bass
Boat dock: Depending on the water level, it is generally easy to park up to 2- 18 foot boats alongside the dock. However the dock needs to be used only for unloading and loading items and people. Please pull it up and anchor and use eye lets, don't leave it next to the dock. When there is a storm, the winds can get very high. You may need to pull your boat(s) at night to protect them from hitting the dock. Please bring your own bumpers. We now have large, steel eyelet bolts in the stumps you can use to help tie your boat off. Please use them as you would use tie-off poles in the water. For maximum protection of your boat, please pull your boat each night. The large Big Manistique Lake can be rough on a boat through a storm.
Boat rental: We do have a dock if you wish to bring your own boat to use on vacation. If you would like to rent a boat a great place to consider is Watson's Marina (W17225 Main St, Curtis, MI 49820).
Cable: Yes-We do have Direct TV in the living room at the Big Manistique Lakefront Cottage.
Cell phone service: AT&T and track phones generally have good service around the cabin. Still, cell phone service is generally unreliable in the Upper Peninsula, when you travel outside of Marquette and Escanaba.
Internet: We don't currently have Internet at the Big Manistique Cabin. The closest Internet service would be at a restaurant in Curtis.
Kitchen/Bath: For your convenience, the kitchen is supplied with basic utensils and stocked with paper towel, plus there is a dishwasher and coffee maker for use during your stay. Also, you will find that the bathrooms are stocked with bathroom tissue and there are bath towels available for use.
Fans/Air Conditioning/Heating: While we do not have air conditioning at the Big Manistique Lakefront Cabin, in our experience it would rarely be needed. The ceiling fan and room fans, plus the cool evening air in the Upper Peninsula, makes your experience a comfortable one. Thermostats for heat are located in every room.
Firewood: There may be some firewood available for your use at the cabin, but due to rain or other weather conditions, it could be too wet to burn. In the instance that you need firewood, you may pick up some in Curtis for approximately $5/bundle. The indoor wood burning stove is for decorative purposes only, therefore we ask that it not be used.
Grilling: We have provided a gas grill for guests to use.
Privacy/Neighbors: There is definitely a lot of privacy at the Big Manistique Cottage. The nearest neighbor is about 200 feet away and separated by a region of trees.
Pets: We do allow pets, but please ask that you pick up after your pet both inside and outside of the cabin. *Pets are welcome! Freshwater Vacation Rentals currently charges $50/per pet.
Roads: In arriving to the Big Manistique Lake Cabin, you do need to drive on some gravel roads to get to the cabin. The roads are not 2-tracks and they will be bumpy in places, but with caution, it is easy to maneuver directly to the cabin.
Swimming: We do swim on Big Manistique Lake, yet generally the bottom of the lake is quite rocky, so we strongly suggest bringing water shoes. The dock has a ladder attached to it at the end for swimming. You can swim around the end of the dock. It is fairly shallow out 30-40 yards or so. (3-5 ft. deep) There are also 2 public beaches in the Manistique Lakes area.
1. The best swimming beach is on Round Lake (North Manistique Lake) at the Luce County Park (3266 County Road 478, McMillan, MI, about 13 miles northeast of Big Manistique Lake. $4/day parking for cars.
2. Portage Township Park - Down the street from the Erickson Center (9246 Saw-Wa-Quato Street, Curtis, MI) toward Manistique Lake.
Water: Our well provides clear, clean water for your use. The well water is treated and filtered. Here is the challenge: This is an older plumbing system. Therefore, you will experience very low water pressure, if any at all, if you use both showers at the same time or run the dishwasher, washing machine or shower together. This is an older cottage, with an older plumbing system. Enjoy the nuances of this quaint seasonal cottage.

We had a fabulous stay at the house on Big Manistique Lake. Great location for all the different things we planned. The view is fabulous. The house is stocked nicely with all the tools and equipment you need for cooking/eating. The only thing I would say is that it would be nice if there had been blinds on the windows in the bedroom. We would definitely stay here again!
Thank you for the suggestion about the blinds. We are looking into it. We are happy you enjoyed your stay. Let us know your 2018 dates so we can reserve!
Gorgeous fall weekend
We absolutely loved our time at Big Manistique Lake. Right when we stepped into the cottage, we felt welcomed. Everything was ready for us. We enjoyed the weekend with family. The place was clean and neat. Everything that was mentioned on the website was there. No surprises. The place was just as it was described. The directions to the place were easy to follow. The pictures provided were helpful. We had invited some of the family and the pictures of the bedrooms were helpful, especially when figuring out the sleeping arrangements. Also, the kitchen and dining room were plenty big enough to accommodate all of us. We did all of our own cooking which was why the size of the kitchen and eating area were so important to us. While the pictures provided were helpful for that, they didn't do the view justice. The view of the lake from the cottage was beautiful. The yard was huge and partially wooded. Even though there were cottages nearby, the size of the yard and location of the cottage we stayed in gave us the feeling no one else was around for miles. The front room had big picture windows overlooking the lake. With the exception of the bathroom, every room had windows. The sunrise was spectacular. The sun shining in the cottage during the day made the place warm and cheerful. While the fall weekend was cool, it was not cold. We did a lot of sitting out on the deck which overlooked the beautiful lake. The evenings got a little chilly so we started a fire in the woodstove. It was the weekend of the Ocktoberfest in Curtis. On Saturday, we wandered back to town which was 8 miles away for the festivities. On Sunday we took a drive to see the ghost town of Fayetteville which was about an hour a a half away. Mostly, we just sat around, talked and relaxed. What a wonderful weekend.
I'm so glad you had a fabulous stay at the Big Manistique Lakefront Cottage! We would love to have you back again in the near future. Thank you for taking the time to write such a thorough review which totally captured your experience.
Quiet, relaxing, and beautiful place to stay.
We truly enjoyed our time. The house was clean and very comfortable. Our dog loved the large yard and yet we felt very secluded.
I love that feature of the house myself--I love feeling the privacy without the houses being on top of each other, as with other lakefront homes. This place is a gem! I'm so glad you enjoyed yourselves. We'd love to have you back again in the future!
Great place to stay in UP Michigan
This is a nice house to use as a home base for visiting a variety if sights in the UP. There were only three of us so we had lots of room. The sunrises over the lake were breathe taking and all we had to do was walk down the hallway to see them. Right after the summer season ended was a perfect time to visit. Thank you for sharing the house with us.
Thanks for being great guests and sharing your experience.
We hope to have you back again.
Some attractions in Germfask are Tad Lake, Seney Wildlife Refuge, Mezik Lake, Driggs River and many more! Come experience the same area where Ernest Hemingway found inspiration for his writings.
