A former boulangerie, we have converted it into a sweet little cottage. downstairs is the lounge TV DVD and SKY free to view, leading into kitchen with french doors that leads into the delightful dining conservatory
The cottage backs out directly on to the best view of the garden - the pond with it's fish, water lillies & hundreds of black & green frogs... quite often goosey goose too! As you dine in the conservatory you can watch the Llamas and the other animals go about their 'hectic' lifestyle!
Upstairs is a double bedroom... but please note the ceiling is sloping so anyone that is very tall this may not be for you!
I'm sorry but unsuitable for children... we are a child free zone for couple only breaks.
A former hay loft converted to a great self contained apartment with en suite, wifi & a south westerly facing private roof terrace over looking the countryside, OR our sweet little cottage - perfect for couples looking for a base to explore Normandy & benefit from peace, quiet and privacy...a child free zone.
3 star classification awarded to both units by Manche Tourisme we have all the safety measure installed to include smoke detectors etc as required by Ministry Tourism.
Set within the grounds of large country house set in 3 acres, both have separate entrances, secure parking and completely self contained... if you don't want to see us you don't!
We're 4 miles from Ste Mere Eglise & Carentan - 10 minutes from Utah Beach & in the heart of a National Park.
We've tried to think of everything! Free wifi, TV, free to view SKY TV, DVD player - masses of movies to include The Longest Day & Band of Brothers. Log wood burner, candles, bed made up with 100% cotton crisp linen, plenty of towels, toweling bathrobes...we leave out guest soaps, loo rolls and cleaning products as well.
This is a child free zone... no traffic jams, stress and certainly none of the hustle and bustle of city living.
Utah Beach & Regional Park: Set in Normandy within Cotentin and Bessin Marshlands Regional Natural Park which covers 145,000 hectare with 144 villages and towns within the Park.
WW2 Utah Beach the Invasion beach, located less than 10 minutes from us, is a significantly important coastal protected area of 12,000 acres with the Beauguillot Bird Sanctuary 1,200 acres.
The area is stunning countryside and completely different each season. For example in the winter the marshlands flood to create a beautiful watery scenery with the big skies reflected, then in the summer it becomes pasture with cows peacefully grazing.
This coast being slightly wilder than the west coast is very unspoilt especially with the government owning vast tracts of the coast line to preserve the natural beauty.
This area in Normandy is also famous for it’s horses with numerous stud farms and training stables. On Utah Beach world class Trotting Horses are trained everyday on the beach.
The beaches and seafood: There is something for everyone, bird watchers, beach lovers, gourmets, wine lovers, walkers, bike riders, horse riders, wind surfers, sand yachters, sailing, diving, horse racing, interest in the 2nd world war Normandy Landing Beaches, 101st Airborne or just generally exploring…the problem here is that there is too much to do!
Yet in the summer the beaches are paradise, miles and miles of golden sands a perfect spot for a peaceful read, a sun bathe or beach combing, shell fish gathering for your supper when the tide is out, it's safe to swim and it's not crowded. With the bird sanctuary on Utah Beach there is an amazing number of different species of sea birds and ducks If it is particularly quiet on the beach you may be able to spot the colony of seals.
Huge mussels and oysters beds with the produce destined for the finest restaurants and tables in Paris and other gourmet destinations – it is possible to purchase shellfish direct from the farm shops locally
Cycling & Walking & Invasion Beaches: We are set in the heart of the Normandy D Day Invasion beaches with WW2 Utah Beach 10 minutes away, Ste Mere Eglise & Carentan both 8 kms from us & as we are 2 minutes from N13 we are in an ideal location for easy access to go sight seeing, war tours etc.
Bayeux, Mont St Michel are just short drives away, it is even possible to go to Jersey for the day from here!
Animals - We're know as Arc de Noah here in our village! we have 2 Llamas, 3 Alpacas, 2 very friendly goats, 2 sheep, lots and lots of bantam & silkie chickens all at liberty, 1 goose, 3 young Jack Russell's that live for visitors plus Bella a rescue York-Chi weighing in at 3 kg! plus 8 rescue cats.
Cycling or walking holidays...1,000 km of trails for cycling with one of the 22km routes starting outside our gate!
If you like local produce then there are many farms open to the general public, where you can see the produce being made and buy some to take home. It's possible to have tours round the Camembert factories.
Do note though the cottage was built 300 or 400 years ago - the bedroom has limited head height as it is in the eaves., until June 2017 the bathroom is downstairs - we are currently working on installing a bathroom upstairs...but if you are above average height you may prefer the barn apartment with en-suite & super kingsize bed 6'x6'6" plus the roof terrace.
Please do not book here if you don't like:
Countryside noises: we are opposite the church - it has bells, there is a donkey in the next field and we have cockerels.
Cats : we have 8 rescue cats - 3 can be quite determined about visiting!
Dogs: we have 4 of them who adore visitors & want to say hello.
We were working & living just outside London before taking the decision to leave our careers take the plunge & move here to Normandy in 2001, we had no plans to start vacation rentals...it just sort of happened! For me it is the answer to my dreams as I had over 15 years in the Hotel & Catering Industry training as a Hotel Manager...I always yearned for my own hotel...so this is as good as it gets! 16 years later we are thoroughly enjoying running our business,we are passionate about this hidden area of France and offer more than just a vacation rental, we are more than happy to share with you where to go, what to see, how to get there, we've struck a deal with a local dealership to hire cars as there are no car hire companies locally - devised a WW2 tour which we will give you to do yourselves and we'll make reservations for you at restaurants. We have 3 rental vacation properties, the barn apartment & the cottage here at our little farm & a terrace house in the village of Sainte Marie du Mont the 1st village liberated (Band of Brothers) right opposite the church a 3 bedroom stone town house...
Here at the 'farm' we have 4 dogs, 8 cats, (all rescues), 2 Llamas, 3 Alpacas, 2 sheep, 2 goats, chickens & our old faithful goose now 13 years old... We like to think we do give great value, secure parking as many DVD's as you want, TV, dogs to play with, books to read and masses of tips re the area...I knit, embroider, Mike is a petrol head and also has other great interests apart from cars & the war!
Tansy Forster purchased this cottage in 2004
Our 1st farmhouse (on the west coast of the peninsula) was a renovation project taking 2 years and was a lovely house when finished, however as it was very isolated we felt no part of a community, we were drawn to the this side of the peninsula with the history and activity around the Invasion Beaches & National Park...we found Ferme de l'Eglise in 2003 and adored that it was in the heart of a village, yet you only had to go round the corner to see the house backs onto it's own fields... best of both worlds...village & countryside!
The location is amazing, 4 miles in 1 direction to Carentan, 4 miles the other to, Ste Mere Eglise, 10 minutes to Utah Beach, 4 miles to a mainline station with trains direct to Paris, our village is on a direct road to a junction onto the N13, we're 30 minutes from Cherbourg, 40 from Bayeux & an hour from Caen...the countryside is simply stunning with glorious coastlines and the wonderful marshes all around us that in the summer have world class horses grazing and in the winter create the most beautiful flooded areas as far as the eye can see. An area of outstanding natural beauty with Normandy having the most Chateaux per square mile in the whole of France...an unspoilt area with something for everyone!
Thank you Mike and Tansy ! We had such a great stay in the cottage over New Year. This trip really made us realise how much we love Normandy, we'll def be back !
NOTE!! NO check in after 6 pm - we are totally flexible for arrival & departure days EXCEPT SUNDAY...this rural part of France does not have Sunday Trading ...there are NO shops open except for a few butchers & bakers...
Please try not travel on a Saturday in the summer months.
Prices are inclusive of everything including the dishwasher tablets!
Arriving in Houesville we found a homelike, complete furnished Cottage, which was arranged with a passion for details. There is a comfortable living room, a lovely bedroom under the roof, an absolutely complete equipped citchen with a dining table and a newly build bathroom which gave us a wellness-feeling.
At the back side of the Cottage there is a terrace with table, seats and sunloungers and a beatiful view on a pond and the big garden, which is enlived by various animals (chicken, cats, frogs, dogs, etc.) - it's an idyll!
Houesville is well located (direct connection to motorway N13) to discover the Cotentin peninsula with their varied offers of nature, culture, history and recreation.
What made this holidays absolutely perfect were the pretty nice hosts Tansy and Mike who were attentively in every way and made us feel good from the very first second.

Tansy and Mike are helpful, knowledgeable hosts. Ferme d'Eglise is a charming cottage in the Normandy countryside of the Manche area.
We enjoyed getting lost, having adventures and discovering lots of, off the beaten track locations , as well as following Tansy's terrific guide to the D day landing sites and her restaurant recommendation.
This was our first trip from the states to overseas and we experienced the ultimate vacation!
Have you ever met someone and just knew from the start that you had friends for life? We did just this when we booked this beautiful cottage. Tansy was so helpful right from the start of our reservation until we departed on our last day. If we had questions ( and we did) she was prompt in getting back to us. She gave us a lot of great advice, but let us do what we felt was best without question. She definitely made our vacation seamless!
Our cottage was well appointed and we didn't need for anything. I can't even say how comfortable the bed was! We slept so soundly every night. The pups and cats would come and go as they pleased ( with our permission of course) and that was just fine for us since we had left our dog with friends and were missing him.
Tansy gave us maps and so many hints about the locals, which all came in handy.
Our trip was made complete when we were invited to partake in the festivities on the first day of the Tour de France. The riders were coming right in front of one of the homes that Tansy and Mike rent, and on that day we were introduced to nine of their closest friends and family. We were welcomed into their circle and everyone was so attentive to us and our wants and needs! It was so special, and we've got memories that we'll cherish forever!
We'll definitely be going back! ( I want to go now!)
Thank you Tansy and Mike for a memorable trip!
We had a lovely week in this cottage in the beautiful country side of Normandy, even though it was a very busy week, it was so relaxing. The cottage is so comfortable and is equipped with everything you could possibly need for a thorally enjoyable holiday. Mike and Tansy we're brilliant hosts, very knowledgeable and helpful with information about things to do around this beautiful area, and with the information they emailed before our trip was very helpful.
I can't go without mentioning all the animals on the farm, it was lovely to watch them all, and the dogs and cats we're real characters, especially Madge and her tennis ball,

If you have a real interest in D-Day you will learn so much, if you are there to enjoy Normandy Tansy can inform you of all the good places to go and the bits of local advice that get you ahead of the game.
The location is in a beautiful farming village with stunning walks all around the area, if you wish there is always the possibly of walking with Ferdinand the Llama who Tansy often walks around the village, Carentan is literally 5 minutes away from the house with Utah and Museums around 10 to 15 minutes away, and the location is very close to the N13 which will take you in any direction you wish to travel.

We fell in love with the property, animals, and the owners.
Will we go back - You bet your life we will.
A great week spent in the heart of Normandy, visiting WW2 Landing Beaches, Museums and Memorials. Also relaxing at beautiful fishing harbours, empty beaches and Norman towns and villages.
The Gite was superb, very comfortable and provided with everything you could possibly imagine to make your stay comfortable.
For us, the icing on the cake was the attention of the dogs and cats throughout the week, especially Madge and her tennis ball.
This isn't the cheapest Gite to hire but, as they say, you get what you pay for!
Thanks to Tansy and Mike for making us feel so welcome. We really do hope we can visit again in the future, hopefully with the Midget next time :)
