Utah Beach & Regional Park: Set in Normandy within Cotentin and Bessin Marshlands Regional Natural Park which covers 145,000 hectare with 144 villages and towns within the Park. WW2 Utah Beach the Invasion beach, located less than 10 minutes from us, is a significantly important coastal protected area of 12,000 acres with the Beauguillot Nature Reserve/Bird Sanctuary of 1,200 acres.
The area is stunning countryside and completely different each season. For example in the winter the marshlands flood to create a beautiful watery scenery with the big skies reflected, then in the summer it becomes pasture with cows peacefully grazing.
This coast being slightly wilder than the west coast is very unspoilt especially with the government owning vast tracts of the coast line to preserve the natural beauty.
This area in Normandy is also famous for it’s horses with numerous stud farms and training stables. On Utah Beach world class Trotting Horses are trained everyday on the beach.
The beaches and seafood: There is something for everyone, bird watchers, beach lovers, gourmets, wine lovers, walkers, bike riders, horse riders, wind surfers, sand yachters, sailing, diving, horse racing, interest in the 2nd world war Normandy Landing Beaches, 101st Airborne or just generally exploring…the problem here is that there is too much to do!
Yet in the summer the beaches are paradise, miles and miles of golden sands a perfect spot for a peaceful read, a sun bathe or beach combing, shell fish gathering for your supper when the tide is out, it's safe to swim and it's not crowded. With the bird sanctuary on Utah Beach there is an amazing number of different species of sea birds and ducks If it is particularly quiet on the beach you may be able to spot the colony of seals.
Huge mussels and oysters beds with the produce destined for the finest restaurants and tables in Paris and other gourmet destinations – it is possible to purchase shellfish direct from the farm shops locally
Cycling & Walking & Invasion Beaches: We are set in the heart of the Normandy D Day Invasion beaches with WW2 Utah Beach 10 minutes away, Ste Mere Eglise & Carentan both 8 kms from us & as we are 2 minutes from N13 we are in an ideal location for easy access to go sight seeing, war tours etc.
Bayeux, Mont St Michel are just short drives away, it is even possible to go to Jersey for the day from here!
Animals - We're know as Arc de Noah here in our village! we have 2 Llamas, 3 Alpacas, a kune kune pet pigs, 2 very friendly goats, 2 sheep, lots and lots of bantam & silkie chickens all at liberty, 1 goose, 2 turkeys, 3 young Jack Russell's that live for visitors plus Bella a rescue York-Chi weighing in at 3 kg! plus 8 rescue cats.
Cycling or walking holidays...1,000 km of trails for cycling with one of the 22km routes starting outside our gate!
If you like local produce then there are many farms open to the general public, where you can see the produce being made and buy some to take home. It's possible to have tours round the Camembert factories.
Do note though the cottage was built before plumbing was invented so the bedroom is upstairs & the bathroom is down, plus the bedroom has limited head height as it is in the eaves...you may prefer the barn apartment with en-suite & super kingsize bed 6'x6'6".
We were working & living just outside London before taking the decision to leave our careers take the plunge & move here to Normandy in 2001, we had no plans to start vacation rentals...it just sort of happened! For me it is the answer to my dreams as I had over 15 years in the Hotel & Catering Industry training as a Hotel Manager...I always yearned for my own hotel...so this is as good as it gets! Almost 13 years later we are thoroughly enjoying running our business,we are passionate about this hidden area of France and offer more than just a vacation rental, we are more than happy to share with you where to go, what to see, how to get there, we've struck a deal with a local dealership to hire cars - devised a WW2 tour which we will give you to do yourselves and we'll make reservations for you at restaurants. We have 4 rental vacation properties, our beach house on Utah Beach which is 10 minutes away from where we are based, has 4,bedrooms & 3 bathrooms with sea views and direct access onto the WW2 Invasion Beach Utah Beach Normandy, in the village of Sainte Marie du Mont the 1st village liberated (Band of Brothers) right opposite the church we have a lovely 2 bedroom stone town house... then, here where we live we have our 2 couples only units on our little 'farm' where we have 4 dogs, 8 cats, (all rescues), 2 Llamas, 3 Alpacas, 2 sheep, 2 goats, a kune kune pig, chickens & our old faithful goose now 11 years old... We give great value, secure parking as many DVD's as you want, TV, dogs to play with, books to read and we can give masses of tips re the area...
Tansy Forster purchased this apartment in 2004
Our 1st farmhouse (on the west coast of the peninsula) was a renovation project taking 2 years and was a lovely house when finished, however as it was very isolated we felt no part of a community, we were drawn to the this side of the peninsula with the history and activity around the Invasion Beaches & National Park...we found Ferme de l'Eglise in 2003 and adored that it was in the heart of a village, yet you only had to go round the corner to see the house backs onto it's own fields... best of both worlds...village & countryside!
The location is amazing, 4 miles in 1 direction to Carentan, 4 miles the other to, Ste Mere Eglise, 10 minutes to Utah Beach, 4 miles to a mainline station with trains direct to Paris, our village is on a direct road to a junction onto the N13, we're 30 minutes from Cherbourg, 40 from Bayeux & an hour from Caen...the countryside is simply stunning with glorious coastlines and the wonderful marshes all around us that in the summer have world class horses grazing and in the winter create the most beautiful flooded areas as far as the eye can see. An area of outstanding natural beauty with Normandy having the most Chateaux per square mile in the whole of France...an unspoilt area with something for everyone!
My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights in October. It is difficult to describe how comfortable and convenient this little cottage is. There are all the mod cons and it is quaint, too, on top of that. You feel as though you have your own little nest in the countryside. Tansy and Mike are gracious and helpful hosts, with all the information you need to visit the historic beaches and other sights in the area. The glassed-in patio overlooking the pond and the animal enclosures is ideal for breakfast or enjoying a glass of wine in the evening. This cottage was all that was promised and more! I highly recommed this gite for a couple looking for a romantic and convenient location.
NOTE: NO check in after 6 pm - We are totally flexible for arrival departure days EXCEPT for a SUNDAY...this area is not a Sunday Trade area, the only shops that are open are a few butchers & bakers & none of our cleaning staff will work on a Sunday...so I'm sorry Sunday's do not work for us at all!
Prices include everything right down to dishwasher tablets.
Please do not travel on Saturdays during the summer season!

Our six day stay at the apartment over the barn at Ferme de l'Elise was a perfect end to our vacation in France in August 2016. Communication and planning with Tansy prior to our arrival was timely and efficient and made for an easy arrival to Houesville. We enjoyed every minute of the countryside. Tansy and Mike are amazing hosts going above and beyond to ensure our stay was fun and relaxing. They are just the nicest people you will ever meet!
The apartment was beautiful with everything we needed, and we made use of the outdoor patio at the end of our busy days. We loved all the country sounds, the animals, and the sounds of those church bells... just beautiful! All of Tansy's recommendations for sightseeing were spot on, we only wished we had a few more days to see more. Tansy arranged a car for us during our time there, and because we left on a Bank Holiday, we were unable to return it as most businesses are closed. Tansy and Mike helped us with that and ensured we made our train on time. We would love to return one day to the Normandy area and would not hesitate to recommend this property to our family and friends who may travel there.
Thanks again for a memorable stay!

We were really impressed from the moment we arrived at the apartment - it is clean, well equipped and like a home from home. A lot of thought has gone into the interior, and the grounds provide the perfect setting to relax in.
The area is so peaceful (other than the occasional 'eeyore' from Stavros the donkey next door!) and Tansy and Mike are perfect hosts - nothing is too much trouble.
There is so much to do in the area, and Tansy's guidance as to the 'must do' activities really helped.
A week in this area was not long enough, and with so much still to see, we would certainly hope to return to the apartment again in the future.
Catherine and Simon.
Our stay at the Barn loft apartment could not have been better! The picturesque and peaceful farm setting combines with spotless, luxurious accommodations in the apartment to make a perfect holiday spot. Every little detail receives careful attention, from the fully stocked and convenient kitchen, to the comfortable furniture and helpful reading materials, to the beautiful modern bedroom and bathroom complete with luxurious linens and hand-embroidered plush towels. The large skylights make the apartment bright and cheery, but pull-down shades darken the space completely for sleeping. After day trips to the Normandy beaches and cemeteries, Mont St. Michel, San Malo, Bayeux, and Calvados country, we enjoyed wine and dinner on the patio, surrounded by beautiful gardens.
Tansy and Mike were perfect hosts who helped us plan the trip months in advance. They told us exactly what train to take from Paris, and they arranged the rental car that met us at the Carentan train station. They welcomed us warmly and were always available for questions and fun conversation, but they also allowed us privacy. Their recommendations about what to see (and what to avoid) were spot-on, and they stepped in to help us bridge the language barrier when we had a question about the rental car.
This property, and these hosts, receive our strongest possible recommendation. We would stay here, or at any of their properties, if our travels took us back to this region.
This little farm in Normandy was a real gem. No detail was spared in the beautifully renovated loft apartment and we were able to dine out at a nearby restaurant or eat in thanks to the elegant kitchen and spacious dining room. Tansy was well organized and helped us out with the car hire, planning our daily activities and offering to make restaurant reservations. Waking up in the morning was a wonderfully relaxing experience between the assortment of happy barnyard sounds and the morning church bells from the ancient church right across the road. We could definitely have used more time to explore the region and will just have to return to finish off our tour!
We stayed in the cottage for 4 wonderful nights. The listing photos and description are spot on and what drew us to the rental, but nothing can do justice until you arrive in person. We were welcomed by Mike and Tansy (and the jacks!) like we were family. We decided to tour the beaches and countryside on our own and Tansy was a wealth of information. I regret not taking her advice on two things...One: only staying 4 nights, as we would have given up our time in Paris had we not had a rental already booked for the end of our vacation and Two: we took the train from Paris to Caen and rented a car. Next trip I we will train to Carentan and use Tansy's car hire there. Driving in Caen was not our cup of tea. I cannot say enough about this property and the owners. I miss the conservatory dining room for my morning coffee and evening wine. I miss the local fresh baguette and pastries. I miss the church bells and the walks on the property to visit the animal friends! I miss Normandy period! And you will not find a better place to fall in love with this beautiful countyside than this listing. I piece of my heart has been left there. Thank you Tansy and Mike, and God willing we will see you again. PS: Tell Mike that "cracking good" is a regular phrase in the Williams household now!
In the heart of WW2 June 6th 1944 Invasion Beaches close to Utah Beach, 4 miles from Ste Mere Eglise, 4 miles from Carentan, from our village you can see the memorial where General Pratt crashed in Heisville...we're half a mile from all the Command Posts!
Set in the heart of a conservation area of significant importance we are in the beautiful and stunning Parc Naturel Cotentin et du Bessin we are less than 2 miles from the Parks Head Office.
Ste Marie du Mont was the first village in France to be liberated on June 6th 1944. Ste mere Eglise still has the parachutist effigy hanging from the church tower.
Band of Brothers story featured around here for parts 2 & 3.
Further up the coast the other invasion beaches Point du Hoc Arromanches, Mulberry Harbour, are all easy access and well worth a visit. The museums, memorials and information are superb with films in most museums, all of them are really worth visiting...we highly recommend the 360 degree cinema at Arromanches. There is so much to do here, not just the invasion beaches....Bayeux Tapestry, Mont St Michel, Caen, UNESCO St Vaast la Hougue & the Isle Tatihou, Barfleur where William the Conqueror (set sail from), Briquebec, St Saveur Vicompte & Valognes where castles exist from the 100 years war. We have Roman remains, the 1st stone built castle against the Vikings, Hitlers defenses in the Atlantic wall...it's all here!
