Utah Beach & Regional Park: Set in Normandy within Cotentin and Bessin Marshlands Regional Natural Park which covers 145,000 hectare with 144 villages and towns within the Park.

WW2 Utah Beach the Invasion beach, located less than 10 minutes from us, is a significantly important coastal protected area of 12,000 acres with the Beauguillot Bird Sanctuary 1,200 acres.

The area is stunning countryside and completely different each season. For example in the winter the marshlands flood to create a beautiful watery scenery with the big skies reflected, then in the summer it becomes pasture with cows peacefully grazing.

This coast being slightly wilder than the west coast is very unspoilt especially with the government owning vast tracts of the coast line to preserve the natural beauty.

This area in Normandy is also famous for it’s horses with numerous stud farms and training stables. On Utah Beach world class Trotting Horses are trained everyday on the beach.

The beaches and seafood: There is something for everyone, bird watchers, beach lovers, gourmets, wine lovers, walkers, bike riders, horse riders, wind surfers, sand yachters, sailing, diving, horse racing, interest in the 2nd world war Normandy Landing Beaches, 101st Airborne or just generally exploring…the problem here is that there is too much to do!

Yet in the summer the beaches are paradise, miles and miles of golden sands a perfect spot for a peaceful read, a sun bathe or beach combing, shell fish gathering for your supper when the tide is out, it's safe to swim and it's not crowded. With the bird sanctuary on Utah Beach there is an amazing number of different species of sea birds and ducks If it is particularly quiet on the beach you may be able to spot the colony of seals.

Huge mussels and oysters beds with the produce destined for the finest restaurants and tables in Paris and other gourmet destinations – it is possible to purchase shellfish direct from the farm shops locally

Cycling & Walking & Invasion Beaches: We are set in the heart of the Normandy D Day Invasion beaches with WW2 Utah Beach 10 minutes away, Ste Mere Eglise & Carentan both 8 kms from us & as we are 2 minutes from N13 we are in an ideal location for easy access to go sight seeing, war tours etc.

Bayeux, Mont St Michel are just short drives away, it is even possible to go to Jersey for the day from here!

Animals - We're know as Arc de Noah here in our village! we have 2 Llamas, 3 Alpacas, 2 very friendly goats, 2 sheep, lots and lots of bantam & silkie chickens all at liberty, 1 goose, 3 young Jack Russell's that live for visitors plus Bella a rescue York-Chi weighing in at 3 kg! plus 8 rescue cats.

Cycling or walking holidays...1,000 km of trails for cycling with one of the 22km routes starting outside our gate!

If you like local produce then there are many farms open to the general public, where you can see the produce being made and buy some to take home. It's possible to have tours round the Camembert factories.

Do note though the cottage was built 300 or 400 years ago - the bedroom has limited head height as it is in the eaves., until June 2017 the bathroom is downstairs - we are currently working on installing a bathroom upstairs...but if you are above average height you may prefer the barn apartment with en-suite & super kingsize bed 6'x6'6" plus the roof terrace.

Please do not book here if you don't like:

Countryside noises: we are opposite the church - it has bells, there is a donkey in the next field and we have cockerels.

Cats : we have 8 rescue cats - 3 can be quite determined about visiting!

Dogs: we have 4 of them who adore visitors & want to say hello.

About Tansy Forster

We were working & living just outside London before taking the decision to leave our careers take the plunge & move here to Normandy in 2001, we had no plans to start vacation just sort of happened! For me it is the answer to my dreams as I had over 15 years in the Hotel & Catering Industry training as a Hotel Manager...I always yearned for my own this is as good as it gets! 16 years later we are thoroughly enjoying running our business,we are passionate about this hidden area of France and offer more than just a vacation rental, we are more than happy to share with you where to go, what to see, how to get there, we've struck a deal with a local dealership to hire cars as there are no car hire companies locally - devised a WW2 tour which we will give you to do yourselves and we'll make reservations for you at restaurants. We have 3 rental vacation properties, the barn apartment & the cottage here at our little farm & a terrace house in the village of Sainte Marie du Mont the 1st village liberated (Band of Brothers) right opposite the church a 3 bedroom stone town house...

Here at the 'farm' we have 4 dogs, 8 cats, (all rescues), 2 Llamas, 3 Alpacas, 2 sheep, 2 goats, chickens & our old faithful goose now 13 years old... We like to think we do give great value, secure parking as many DVD's as you want, TV, dogs to play with, books to read and masses of tips re the area...I knit, embroider, Mike is a petrol head and also has other great interests apart from cars & the war!

Tansy Forster purchased this apartment in 2004

Why Tansy Forster chose Manche

Our 1st farmhouse (on the west coast of the peninsula) was a renovation project taking 2 years and was a lovely house when finished, however as it was very isolated we felt no part of a community, we were drawn to the this side of the peninsula with the history and activity around the Invasion Beaches & National Park...we found Ferme de l'Eglise in 2003 and adored that it was in the heart of a village, yet you only had to go round the corner to see the house backs onto it's own fields... best of both worlds...village & countryside!

What makes this apartment unique

The location is amazing, 4 miles in 1 direction to Carentan, 4 miles the other to, Ste Mere Eglise, 10 minutes to Utah Beach, 4 miles to a mainline station with trains direct to Paris, our village is on a direct road to a junction onto the N13, we're 30 minutes from Cherbourg, 40 from Bayeux & an hour from Caen...the countryside is simply stunning with glorious coastlines and the wonderful marshes all around us that in the summer have world class horses grazing and in the winter create the most beautiful flooded areas as far as the eye can see. An area of outstanding natural beauty with Normandy having the most Chateaux per square mile in the whole of unspoilt area with something for everyone!

Guestbook comments from the owner

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights in October. It is difficult to describe how comfortable and convenient this little cottage is. There are all the mod cons and it is quaint, too, on top of that. You feel as though you have your own little nest in the countryside. Tansy and Mike are gracious and helpful hosts, with all the information you need to visit the historic beaches and other sights in the area. The glassed-in patio overlooking the pond and the animal enclosures is ideal for breakfast or enjoying a glass of wine in the evening. This cottage was all that was promised and more! I highly recommed this gite for a couple looking for a romantic and convenient location.

This is a perfect place for a couple exploring the area who like peace and tranquility... as long as you like country noises then this is great. Stavros the donkey can't help himself when he sees someone - he brays, he's not ours but is totally convinced he belongs to us! We also have a flock of chickens, quite a few cockerels (that chant in the morning), as well as a goose, they have complete freedom to wander over all our land, our freshly laid eggs are available. We do have 4 small dogs and quite a few cats... none of which are allowed in the apartment or the cottage - but they all love visitors so if you are missing yours Madge will oblige - so before you decide to come please be aware they will expect you to say hello when you come and go or you are in the garden! Our Jack Russell's do not understand being ignored! We're very close to the motorway (can't hear it) equidistant 8kms to Carentan, Ste Mere Eglise and Utah Beach. We're in the heart of the WW2 American sector

Owner's Response: Thank you so very much - the Llama arrived today - how I wish you could have been here... still it means you have to come back to meet Fernando & take him for a walk! This is the google translation ... This house is wonderful for two people - cozy and comfortable. The equipment is described, for initial supplies are provided. the bed is prepared and on arrival the fire was burning in the oven and Madge (one of the dogs) was waiting with a ball - it was immediately at home. Tansy and Mike are two wonderful hosts - thank you for that relaxing week. We like to come at any time. Sabine and Jurgen We recommend this house and the place full of people who seek peace and quiet, loves animals are (There are goats, pigs, donkeys, chickens, geese, cats and dogs on the property) and no in close proximity to the hustle and bustle. The baker in Boisville for breakfast baguette is 5 km away and easily reached by bicycle.

Perfect accommodations on beautiful Normandy property.

  • 5 of 5

Our six day stay at the apartment over the barn at Ferme de l'Elise was a perfect end to our vacation in France in August 2016. Communication and planning with Tansy prior to our arrival was timely and efficient and made for an easy arrival to Houesville. We enjoyed every minute of the countryside. Tansy and Mike are amazing hosts going above and beyond to ensure our stay was fun and relaxing. They are just the nicest people you will ever meet!

The apartment was beautiful with everything we needed, and we made use of the outdoor patio at the end of our busy days. We loved all the country sounds, the animals, and the sounds of those church bells... just beautiful! All of Tansy's recommendations for sightseeing were spot on, we only wished we had a few more days to see more. Tansy arranged a car for us during our time there, and because we left on a Bank Holiday, we were unable to return it as most businesses are closed. Tansy and Mike helped us with that and ensured we made our train on time. We would love to return one day to the Normandy area and would not hesitate to recommend this property to our family and friends who may travel there.

Thanks again for a memorable stay!

Owner's Response: Thank you so very much for your gracious are very welcome, we enjoyed your stay with us. As we don't have Sunday trading here and certainly when it's a big holiday nothing is trading. The main car hire companies close for a 2 hour lunch still, even in the major cities and Sunday's are tricky too! We work with a local Renault dealership, as you know, because they know us we are able to help they stay open the whole day so it's not a problem to catch the 10.08 train to arrive at 12.47 from Paris... This summer, Saturdays were incredibly busy again on the motorways, we encourage folk to arrive mid week & enjoy the weekend here as there is always something going on especially in the summer months...the only day of the week we can't operate is a Sunday, after 16 years here, we've had to adopt the French way of life!

Beautiful apartment in a lovely setting

  • 5 of 5

We were really impressed from the moment we arrived at the apartment - it is clean, well equipped and like a home from home. A lot of thought has gone into the interior, and the grounds provide the perfect setting to relax in.

The area is so peaceful (other than the occasional 'eeyore' from Stavros the donkey next door!) and Tansy and Mike are perfect hosts - nothing is too much trouble.

There is so much to do in the area, and Tansy's guidance as to the 'must do' activities really helped.

A week in this area was not long enough, and with so much still to see, we would certainly hope to return to the apartment again in the future.

Many Thanks,

Catherine and Simon.

Everything we hoped for, and more!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at the Barn loft apartment could not have been better! The picturesque and peaceful farm setting combines with spotless, luxurious accommodations in the apartment to make a perfect holiday spot. Every little detail receives careful attention, from the fully stocked and convenient kitchen, to the comfortable furniture and helpful reading materials, to the beautiful modern bedroom and bathroom complete with luxurious linens and hand-embroidered plush towels. The large skylights make the apartment bright and cheery, but pull-down shades darken the space completely for sleeping. After day trips to the Normandy beaches and cemeteries, Mont St. Michel, San Malo, Bayeux, and Calvados country, we enjoyed wine and dinner on the patio, surrounded by beautiful gardens.

Tansy and Mike were perfect hosts who helped us plan the trip months in advance. They told us exactly what train to take from Paris, and they arranged the rental car that met us at the Carentan train station. They welcomed us warmly and were always available for questions and fun conversation, but they also allowed us privacy. Their recommendations about what to see (and what to avoid) were spot-on, and they stepped in to help us bridge the language barrier when we had a question about the rental car.

This property, and these hosts, receive our strongest possible recommendation. We would stay here, or at any of their properties, if our travels took us back to this region.

Luxurious loft apartment in a beautiful location.

  • 5 of 5

This little farm in Normandy was a real gem. No detail was spared in the beautifully renovated loft apartment and we were able to dine out at a nearby restaurant or eat in thanks to the elegant kitchen and spacious dining room. Tansy was well organized and helped us out with the car hire, planning our daily activities and offering to make restaurant reservations. Waking up in the morning was a wonderfully relaxing experience between the assortment of happy barnyard sounds and the morning church bells from the ancient church right across the road. We could definitely have used more time to explore the region and will just have to return to finish off our tour!

Owner's Response: Delighted you enjoyed your time here, as you know we work with local Renault dealership in Carentan who pick up our guests & drop them back to the station which is mainline to Paris which I think better than waiting in Caen for the car offices to reopen after a 2 hour lunch which coincides with the arrival of the Paris train! Indeed we do hope you do return to finish off your exploration of this area and you did have a good time in the 1st World War area.

Above and beyond our expectations!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the cottage for 4 wonderful nights. The listing photos and description are spot on and what drew us to the rental, but nothing can do justice until you arrive in person. We were welcomed by Mike and Tansy (and the jacks!) like we were family. We decided to tour the beaches and countryside on our own and Tansy was a wealth of information. I regret not taking her advice on two things...One: only staying 4 nights, as we would have given up our time in Paris had we not had a rental already booked for the end of our vacation and Two: we took the train from Paris to Caen and rented a car. Next trip I we will train to Carentan and use Tansy's car hire there. Driving in Caen was not our cup of tea. I cannot say enough about this property and the owners. I miss the conservatory dining room for my morning coffee and evening wine. I miss the local fresh baguette and pastries. I miss the church bells and the walks on the property to visit the animal friends! I miss Normandy period! And you will not find a better place to fall in love with this beautiful countyside than this listing. I piece of my heart has been left there. Thank you Tansy and Mike, and God willing we will see you again. PS: Tell Mike that "cracking good" is a regular phrase in the Williams household now!
