Homey cabin

  • 4 of 5

This was a very comfortable place to stay for the week that we worked in Highlands, NC.

All the things we needed were available & we used the grill daily.

Loved that the water was HOT & you didn't have to wait long for it to get that way.

Appeared to be what was described & seen in the pictures. Relatively clean for a "rental" property.

Cozy Cabin!

  • 5 of 5

We spent a long weekend here and could not have been happier! The cabin was warm and inviting. The proximity to Highlands is ideal, less than a 5 minute drive. Lisa was easy to work with and responded quickly as we prepared for the trip. Next time we visit Highlands, this home will be top on our list.

Great Girls Weekend and Birthday Celebration

  • 5 of 5

When I thought about where I wanted to go celebrate my 60th birthday with my girlfriends there was no doubt and I immediately said "lets go back to the Wright cottage!" I have been here 2 other times with couples but I must say our girls weekend was awesome! We hiked White Mountain, shopped downtown and just enjoyed! We even had a dance party in the main living room. Lots of laughs and great memories created once again. Thank you for keeping your home a great place to come back to year after year!

A Wonderful Visit at Wright Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We spent three nights in Wright Cottage prior to Thanksgiving and could not have been happier. It's a rustic, country cottage, but clean, spacious, very comfortable and more than we expected. We also had our dogs with us, and it was perfect having the privacy of the surroundings with no other houses close by. Lisa provided everything we needed to get in, and the other instructions were quite clear and helpful. We'll definitely be back in the coming year.

My friend and I spent a wonderful rainy weekend at the Wright Cottage. The cottage is so comfortable--well maintained, clean and kept in A-1 shape. We didn't want to leave!

Not much RIGHT about this rental.

  • 1 of 5

We have rented in this area off and on for the last 50 years. This is without question our worst rental experience. We asked about the mattress condition, and the date of purchase before we paid. We were told 2011 and that it was in good condition. We complained on the second night after waking up with a severe backache - checked the date on the label. It said 1984! It was totally sprung and felt like sleeping in a giant pothole. We contacted the owner Lisa who had many excuses, took a week to get back to us and finally said they wouldn't do anything. We offered to move but she would not give us our money back. This was a two month rental and we could not afford to lose our money. Their way to make the mattress better was to turn it over - apparently they actually believed this took care of the problem - Scary huh!. What a joke! There was a dirty, stained foam topper on it - it had probably been on there since 1984 as well. We bought bed boards and used lot of linens and did our best to make the bed level and usable. The house was not clean. There were dirty pots, pans and dishes in the cupboard, chipped drinking glasses , dead bugs in the tub, hot water heater had to be reset so we could both take showers, dirty shelves in the MB closet which we had to wash down twice before we could put clothes there since there were no hangars, cobwebs behind the doors and under the lampshades, and a shower curtain that kept falling down. We were told the trash would be picked up on Tuesday and it was for a few weeks - then it wasn't and we came home to find trash all over which the really cute neighborhood bears (love bears)had emptied for us. After the 2nd time this happened - we took our trash ourselves! The plumber fixed the hot water valve since it cut off in the middle of our shower. We saw MICE - the exterminator came , put out traps, checked the basement and there was a broken water pipe and the basement was beginning to flood. If we had not complained about the mice the pipe would still be spewing water all over. The plumber fixed the pipe. This is a house where no maintenance is done unless someone complains. Our "welcome guest gift" was a jar of preserves that had EXPIRED a year before we arrived. Feel welcome yet? Neither did we. We left it for them to enjoy. Many nice rentals around - Don't settle for this! Under pressure from VRBO with 3 weeks left - they offered us a partial refund - too little too late. We're over it!

Owner's Response: The issues that I was made aware of by this renter were all addressed by me in a timely and professional manner. The mattress discussed was purchased in the original packaging in 2011 which can be verified by my receipt. We have not had any complaints by other renters. The water heater was adjusted the 2nd day of this rental above the manufacturer’s recommended temperature. The baking sheets were replaced on the 2nd day of this rental. The frying pan was washed again to meet the renter’s approval. There might be a chipped glass or dish in the cupboard. We don’t inspect the dishes at every cleaning, but we do clean and replace as necessary once a year. This was a 2 party rental, so I feel confident that there were enough glasses and dishes sufficient to meet the renters’ needs for the duration of their stay. The trash was picked up weekly, in some cases, it did not occur on a Tuesday. We provide a heavy board and bungee cords to tie the trash lids down this time of the year to deter the bear(s); unfortunately, it doesn’t always work. The house is serviced quarterly by Terminix. Upon notification of the mice, I immediately called Terminix for a service call; they came out and serviced the house. No traps were put out by Terminix as they use a chemical deterrent. When food is left out, it invites the four legged friends and the nuts left by the renters on the counter on the day of their departure were an invitation to mice. The plumber was called on both occasions when the shower valve broke and the leaky pipe in the crawl space was detected. The first issue was normal wear and tear and the second was the result of the Terminix technician pulling on a pipe while entering the crawl space. It had not been leaking prior to that. Regardless, both issues were handled timely. Our rental contract includes a standard cancellation clause that addresses the time frame required for cancellation and our refund policy. This rental included our peak rental months of late June, July and August. The unwillingness to refund any or all of this rental was made because of 1) the rental contract executed by these renters and 2)the inability I would have to book adequate rentals to make up for any refund. The Wright Cottage has been on VRBO since 2009 and our rentals have grown over the years, including repeat renters who enjoy the cottage. It is not new, but it is clean, well maintained and a family treasure.
