About the property

Summer Onsite Swimming, Boating and Fishing! Some Boats Included! Wi-Fi Too!

I have the cabin of your dreams here on Spider Lake not far from beautiful Traverse City, MI. This clean, two bedroom cabin sleeps one or up to six . It has a bath, kitchen, living room, deck, grills, dock, boats and more! The Jurgens Cabin shares this beautiful piece of property with the Waller Cabin (HA #979945 or #4191259) and they both have the same floor plan only reversed. Here you can relax or be as active as you like on site or off. You can visit Traverse City, the Sleeping Bear Dunes or the many unique Villages and many sites within an hour's drive. Spider Lake has good fishing, swimming and boating. Take a pedal boat, kayak, canoe or row boat to the sandy, wooded, public Island where you can beach it and rub elbows with the locals, regional visitors and vacationers. These boats are included in the cost of a cabin; try and find that elsewhere! Outboard motors and pontoon boats are available for a nominal charge. This property has safe swimming on site and a strong and sturdy dock. Fire pit as well!

Thank you and sincerely,

About Shawn Smith

I grew up near Detroit and made a temporary move to the Spider Lake/Traverse City area to take some classes at Northwestern Michigan College in the winter of 1991. Upon waking, my second morning in February, I was lying in bed on the second floor looking out the window half asleep. All was white when a black squirrel was spotted down and about thirty feet away bounding across a split rail fence. The fence had about six inches of fresh snow and each time the squirrel would jump it would knock some snow off the fence to the ground. The morning was still except for this black squirrel on a pure white landscape. It was like a living painting. I watched this for about thirty seconds and realized at this moment that this is where I belonged. And, here I am today sharing my good fortune with others looking for that special getaway.

Shawn Smith purchased this cottage in 2000

Why Shawn Smith chose Traverse City

Why this Property? Because you get a cabin at an affordable price, on a very nice piece of property with great views not to far from Traverse City, the Sleeping Bear Dunes, wineries, casinos, small towns, shopping and so much more. Plus, and maybe the most important thing to me is the sandy lake bottom and you can swim right out front!!

There are Beautiful and breathtaking views and I like the change of seasons and the innumerable places to go and visit within a short drive. I will say this, I think the best place is Spider Lake!

Guestbook comments from the manager

Hi Shawn, I'm a granddaughter of the original owners/builders of the Buckles' seeing your site & what you have to say about them, as well as the reviews from the renters, I had to write & thank you for not only taking such good care of them but appreciating & enjoying them too! Me & my extended family have precious memories there from many summers spent with our grandparents & miss them and the cabins so. Only our first 2 (of 5) kids got to see them so we hope to visit one day to show them a part of our family's history. We will be in contact when that looks like something we can do in the near future.. Again, thank you for caring about and tending to them like you have, and "carrying on the Buckles' family tradition"!! We hope to meet you some day "soon"!

When we can make it up there (we live in Tn), we'll contact you to see if we can come by and maybe bring some pictures of the cabins "way back when" if you haven't seen them already. :)

God bless,

Perfect place for exploring TC area

  • 5 of 5

We had two couples and two children at the cabin for the weekend. It was a little tricky to find in the dark at first, but once there we had a great time. Everything you need is there to hang out lakeside, cook/eat, and just relax. Plus, being out in the country but still able to order pizza when you are tired from your day is nice!

Everything it says it is and more!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I rented the Jurgens cabin for 4 nights. It is the cutest and most quaint cabin we have stayed in. All we initially asked from Shawn is that the cabin be clean, and it was very clean. It was equipped with everything we could have possibly needed for a comfortable stay. We felt so at home that we ended up staying an extra night. We plan to make Shawns cabins our home away from home every year and hopefully bring our children and grandchildren with us next time. Thank you Shawn for our perfect get away.

Needs to be cleaned and updated!

  • 2 of 5

What would make this cottage a great place to stay, since it's located on Spyder Lake, is some attention. The carpet was very dirty and the furniture was old and uncomfortable. The cottage also had a very musty smell and you need to bring your own pots & pans, since what was there was not usable. (old and rusty). With some TLC it would be nice. Although we were busy and away most days, it would have been nice to come back and relax.

Owner's Response: First, I would like to say I am very confident and excited with the investments and progress we make on the boats and cabins I have to offer. We strive to make improvements every year like the remodeling of Buckles Cabin #2 in 2015 and #3 in 2016. Yes, the carpet needed to be cleaned. It does clean up well so if you are here and feel you would like the carpet cleaned let me know. All my cabins have a considerable number of antiques-I like old. The comment about uncomfortable is vague. It is the first I have heard anyone suggest any furniture in this cabin uncomfortable but I will be asking customers going forward so as to locate the uncomfortable piece or pieces. Musty: I have not heard that before; I am looking into it. I know I have no water leaks. I asked the gal staying there this week and she said “no musty smell and never has been.” I looked at the pots and pans with one of the housekeepers and she thought they were fine and we could find no rust. I asked the gal staying in the cabin this week and she thought the three frying pans, due to normal wear and tear (some Teflon scrapped off), should probably be replaced but that I didn’t need to replace them for her and her family. Neither of us could find any rust. Anyway, I keep new stuff in the shed so I put three new frying pans in the Jurgens Cabin. When the two customers arrived that submitted the review I met with them at the cabin shortly after their arrival to make sure everything was in order. We had a nice 20 minute conversation and again later in their stay we discussed a good place to eat. They stayed their four nights and never said or alluded to anything like this review. It is a bit of an enigma to me. Most of us in the business rely on personal customer recommendations or notes regarding cleanliness and functionality or a simple “it is time to replace that Shawn” would have sufficed but, a review of this type is just plain mean and cowardly. Of course they will not be invited back. And FYI to them it is Spider Lake not Spyder Lake. I invite you to come here and judge the details for yourself. Please share your thoughts with me. I expect you will find the place not to be perfect but just right, healthy and relaxing. I am just as enthusiastic today as I was when I started renting boats & cabins on Spider Lake in 1991. Sincerely, Shawn Smith

Fall colors and mirror like reflections

  • 5 of 5

The most beautiful colors. even the roads that lead you to the cabin in the hills and the curves is an adventure. The water was so calm and clear that when we rented the pontoon boat we went as slow as possible not to break the feelings of peace. The memories are priceless and we highly recommend Shawn's Place.

Owner's Response: I want to thank you for the fine review; it simply promotes what I am trying to do. And, that is to provide a nice, clean place for people to come and relax and enjoy what Spider Lake and the surrounding area have to offer. I grew up in the Detroit suburbs and although I love Detroit, the area and the history, this part of Michigan is priceless to the health of ones soul. I recommend on an annual basis a week's stay and a long weekend. There is more than enough to enjoy! Also, thank you for the beautiful card and commentary. I will hang it in your cabin, Buckles Cabin #2! Shawn

Peaceful and Relaxing

  • 4 of 5

Our family had a great time at the Buckles cabins. The teens loved the use of the kayaks and canoe and we felt very safe with them paddling out to the island. We have stayed on Spider Lake before and we love being close to TC. We kayaked the Platt River and visited the casino, both were close drives. Campfires completed each night and was very relaxing. But the fire pit was so far away and the stairs were not fun at night time. Fishing was good even though we didn't catch anything till the last day! Glad we had the pontoon boat to cruise around the lake, we caught a 34" monster pike! The deck was very large and spacious, we spent most of our time there! Thanks Shawn for a great relaxing week.

Owner's Response: Thanks for choosing one of my places on Spider Lake near Traverse City. I think a “great relaxing week” is paramount to all else. To address some concerns: The cabins are about 50 feet from the lake; the decks are about 40 feet. There are about 25 steps down from the cabins to the fire pit and dock. This elevation gives a very nice panoramic view of the lake from the cabins and decks. It also promotes better wildlife viewing and depth perception. I try to keep the light pollution low (yellow bug lights) for better night vision and sky visibility so bring a flashlight if you have trouble seeing at night. And remember if you are looking into a bright fire at night and then get up and leave the fire it will take some time for your eyes or night vision to adjust to the darkness. I’m glad you caught a 34” monster pike and you know it got that size from eating other fish. You never can guarantee the fishing but the DNR and our private lake studies verify numerous types and numbers of fish. I hope you return sometime as I have two properties and five cabins total. Loved it

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Shawn's Cabins in the Buckles Cabins was absolutely amazing. The Cabin itself was quaint and old fashioned, fully stocked kitchen with great entertainment for the cold weather. The view of the lake was gorgeous and the mood was perfect for a couples getaway. All four of us thoroughly enjoyed our stay and hope to be back in the warmer months. Definitely stay at one of Shawn's cabins if you can, they are wonderful.
