The Rough Guide to Languedoc - Roussillon calls Pézenas, “One of the most singularly beautiful towns in the French Southwest, endowed with an overwhelming concentration of grand architecture”. Thanks to Armand de Bourbon, Prince of Conti, Pézenas was considered the “second Versailles” in the late 17th century. This drew wealth, artists and playwrights of the caliber of Moliere all seeking to gain favour and patronage from the court.
Today, Pézenas has an incredibly well preserved Old Town filled with outdoor restaurants, artisans, and entertainment. Seasonal festivals, celebrations and a huge Saturday market take place year-round in Pézenas and it’s neighbouring villages. Located in the middle of the largest wine growing region in all of France, and less than a half hour drive from the Mediterranean beaches. Simple pleasures are abound.
With so many things to see and do in the Languedoc-Roussilon, Pézenas is ideally situated. The town of Pézenas itself is beautiful and vibrant. From buying bread and tasty treats at the local boulangerie, people watching at a one of the town’s outdoor cafés, or exploring one of the many antique shops (Brocantes), Pézenas has so much to offer. The Old Town is rich with history and fine architecture, and full of unique artisan shops and fine restaurants. What’s more, Pézenas has one of the best year-round Saturday Markets (Bio Marché) in the area. All of this and more is steps away from "L’Appartement des Artistes"
Some of the finest beaches in Southern France are a short drive away, but there is so much more to this area than sun and sand. Incredible sites like Le Pont de Gard, the medeval ramparts of Carcassone, or visiting cities like Montpellier, Narbonne, Beziers, Nimes and Arles. These all make wonderful day-trips from Pézenas. Truly, there are so many things to see and do. You will need more than a week just to scratch the surface of this enchanting region.
We are enthusiastic traveller's who use our wonderful apartment as a base for seeing all of Europe. Everyday we spend in Pézenas teaches us new things about culture, food, wine. We call it 'l'Appartement des Artistes' because we both actively participante in the fine arts.
David and Holly Nielsen purchased this apartment in 2011
When we decided to search for a property in France, we came directly to the Languedoc. The vibe is more laid back then the French Riviera, and the cost of living is far more reasonable. We looked at over 29 properties, and had basically given up.
The day we first saw the apartment, the real estate agent was reluctant to show us this property because it was being completely renovated - it was a disaster!
We knew it was our place the second we saw the front door to the building. As soon as we entered we noticed the old tiles a l'ancienne, and it's incredible staircase. We wanted a property that immediately made one feel that, 'there's no doubt about it, we're in France,' and this one was paying off with every step - and we had not even visited the apartment yet!
Having done numerous home improvement DIY projects, we could see beyond the rubble, and saw this as the incredible property could be and now is.
Of all the apartments in our building, this one retained most of it's original character. 4 meter high ceilings, gigantic light filled windows, original plaster moulding, the marble fireplace and original hexagonal red tiles on the floor. How could we not fall in love with this property.
We know you will also!
We wanted a place that had all the charm of a European apartment with modern conveniences. After we bought the apartment, we went about completely replacing the kitchen and bathrooms with modern energy efficiency equipment - while always maintaining the original charm of this 250 year old building. The modern and the traditional work together in this apartment, not compete.
This apartment is also so well located, we walk everywhere when we are in town. It is in the middle of a thriving village, with everything mere steps away from the building: restaurants, the Old Town, and shopping either atthe local festivals or market. We are far away enough from the over crowded beach towns, but very close to the water. We are surrounded by history and culture, we only needs to ask, 'What am I curious about today?'
Dear David and Holly,
We just spent 2 weeks at your apartment, and we were very impressed how well equipped it was. The apartment is very well located with all shops one might need very close by. The building is old, but the inside of the apartment is certainly new. The kitchen has everything one can think of, the bathroom and shower are great. The beds are very comfortable and the apartment is very nicely furnished, incl. TV, radio. We bought croissents 25 meters away, a fruit and veg store in front and next to that Charcuterie and a small supermarket.
Pezenas, is a very old town that is well maintained and really lovely. Beautiful old buildings, good restaurants and high quality artisan shops; as opposed to run of the mill tourist shops in other towns. It really is special. We had easy visits to other places on roads, which all appeared to have been repaved recently. The countryside is lovely. The distance to the Mediterranean is only about 18-20 kms. During our stay, we visited many interesting places and towns known worldwide. We ate our noon meals at outdoor restaurants every day but one. In short we enjoyed ourselves immensely.
A great place.
The apartment was lovely, attractive, comfortable and well equipped. It is perfectly sited near the centre of town in an area both residential and commercial. David was helpful and easy to deal with. We enjoyed our stay and look forward to coming again.
I highly recommend this beautifully equipped and comfortably elegant apartment. It is in the historic centre of Pezenas- easy walk to all historic landmarks, great restaurants and cafes. Loved to smell the croissants baking in the morning - then just cross the road and pick up breakfast at the bakery and the fruit stall. Later, a short walk to the square to buy my fish and veg and have a coffee. Every day walking through the old town I would see something new and wonderful. A 30 minute drive in any direction brings you to great beaches and amazing medieval towns. The owners are friendly and helpful and they ensured I had all the information I needed. This one will be a definite repeat for me and one that I will highly recommend to my friends. Indeed, this apartment has all the elements for a perfect stay.
The owners were so helpful in ensuring that the property was prepared for our visit and they gave great advice on areas to experience, where best to park, etc. Our 5-year old son was so excited about the bucket of legos that they had for kids to play with and the beach toys. Nice touch.
We enjoyed the surrounding area; our favorite activity was the beach in Marseillan. It was family-friendly and the water was calm - plus, a sandy beach! The olive oil tour was so much fun, make sure you do that. The restaurant behind is named L'Hacienda and it was absolutely amazing and one of our favorite restaurants during our two-month tour of Southern France, run by Chef Jose and his wife Diane. (We also took a quick trip down to Barcelona during our stay and it was quite convenient to drive there from Pezenas.)
Immaculate apartment; and very nicely appointed. The furniture and the art was very pleasing, and we found everything that we needed for the stay. Appreciated having a dishwasher, and the laundry. It was easy to arrange our stay, and the communication with Dave (host) was excellent and timely. I don't think I ever waited longer than 2hours for an answer or an email. The town is charming. If you want a very "French" experience, then Pezenas is a good choice. There are, for instance, no chain restaurants or Starbucks, but there are excellent bistros and "hole in the wall" places, and no shortage of things to wander and see. For instance, we saw free art installations, and the Friday Night market with the local winemakers was really fun. The market on Saturdays is awesome - very large and a good variety of sellers. I really hope that we return sometime soon! Thanks.
The property is larger than we expected and easily allows for 2 couples or a family of 4 or 5. All appliances are contemporary and the added convenience of grocery, patisserie, deli and high quality restaurants within 100m can't be beat. The apartment comes equipped with everything you will need for a memorable time in the south of France. We highly recommend this property.
We enjoyed eight nights at Holly and David's apartment in Pezenas. For anyone exploring the Languedoc-Roussillon area of France, the location is ideal. We explored the region around us during the day and spent our evenings in the village. We tried a different restaurant each night...the cuisine exceeded our expectations. Our favourites: Maison Conti, Le Saint Roch and Les Palmiers. The people of Pezenas welcomed us with open arms. The village is a delightful old labyrinth of laneways filled with artisans and their studios. Be sure to take in the Saturday market!
The apartment was as described in a historic building tucked within the town centre. The bedrooms are quite large and comfortable. There were only two of us, but the flat could easily accommodate a family of four with room to spare. We liked that the shower room was separate from the WC, and both rooms were very clean and modern. The owners provide a nicely stocked kitchen with all the necessities should you choose to eat in. A welcome bottle of wine was waiting for us too! The Wifi worked well, which was appreciated as it allowed us to easily keep in touch with family back home.
The flat comes furnished with modern, easy-to-use appliances, including a dishwasher (which we did not use) and washing machine (which we did). The Nespresso machine is a great touch to grab a quick cuppa while getting ready in the morning before heading out to the patisserie. Holly and David provide useful resources for exploring the region, including recommendations, guidebooks and brochures, which we appreciated. They were also quick to reply to any email inquiries we had.
We drove and had no trouble finding the place. The parking at first seemed confusing, as we had never been to Pezenas before and we were a little overwhelmed from the overnight flight. However, once we got our bearings we realized how close everything actually is! The free parking lots always had spaces for us and there were no issues leaving the car there for days at a time. The farthest we parked was an easy five-minute walk through the village, and by the end of our stay we were so comfortable with the trek, we carried our luggage to the car rather than drive to the apartment to get it. It's that convenient.
We would absolutely recommend Les Appartments des Artistes to anyone looking for a place to stay in Pezenas. We can't wait to return!
