About David and Holly Nielsen
We are enthusiastic traveller's who use our wonderful apartment as a base for seeing all of Europe. Everyday we spend in Pézenas teaches us new things about culture, food and wine. We call it 'l'Appartement des Artistes' because we both actively participate in the fine arts.
David and Holly Nielsen purchased this Apartment in 2011
Why David and Holly Nielsen chose Pézenas
When we decided to search for a property in France, we came directly to the Languedoc. The vibe is more laid back then the French Riviera, and the cost of living is far more reasonable. We looked at over 29 properties, and had basically given up. The day we first saw the apartment, the real estate agent was reluctant to show us this property because it was being completely renovated - it was a disaster! We knew it was our place the second we saw the front door to the building. As soon as we entered we noticed the old tiles a l'ancienne, and it's incredible staircase. We wanted a property that immediately made one feel that, 'there's no doubt about it, we're in France,' and this one was paying off with every step - and we had not even visited the apartment yet! Having done numerous home improvement DIY projects, we could see beyond the rubble, and saw this as the incredible property could be and now is. Of all the apartments in our building, this one retained most of it's original character. 4 meter high ceilings, gigantic light filled windows, original plaster moulding, the marble fireplace and original hexagonal red tiles on the floor. How could we not fall in love with this property. We know you will also!
What makes this Apartment unique
We wanted a place that had all the charm of a European apartment with modern conveniences. After we bought the apartment, we went about completely replacing the kitchen and bathrooms with modern energy efficiency equipment - while always maintaining the original charm of this 250 year old building. The modern and the traditional work together in this apartment, not compete. This apartment is also so well located, we walk everywhere when we are in town. It is in the middle of a thriving village, with everything mere steps away from the building: restaurants, the Old Town, and shopping either atthe local festivals or market. We are far away enough from the over crowded beach towns, but very close to the water. We are surrounded by history and culture, we only needs to ask, 'What am I curious about today?'

Amazing apartment!! Steps away from historic old town.
Holly & Dave are the consummate hosts. Everything you could need is provided. The apartment is so close (steps) to the Historic Old Town that you get such an authentic old world France experience. Market on Saturday, Les Estivales on Friday night, the quaint little shops, narrow streets, patisserie shops, boulangeries, and coffee. Tres bon! The area surrounding Pezenas is steaped in 1000 yr old history, and you are 20 min away from some great beaches on the Mediterranean Sea. Would definitely go back!
We come every year. This is a beautiful apartment and Dave and Holly make everything so easy. The town is truly special.
Dan and his family of 4 have stayed in "L'Appartement des Artistes #1" five times now. It has become a part of their annual visit to France from Barcelona, where they live. We are so thankful! This time around Dan shared the beauty of Pezenas with his mother and her husband. They stayed across the hallway in our other equally wonderful apartment "L'Appartement des Artistes #2" (HomeAway #4274763). The family was "together, but separate" They could share the two spaces as one large family unit, but at the end of the day, close the doors and have time apart as well. Give those grandparents a chance to relax after a busy day with active grandchildren. "Together, but separate" helps families or groups travel together and have their own space at the same time. So if you are planning to travel in two small groups or a large family to the South of France, we've got just the place for you!
nice apartment, great location, wonderful owners, noisy street
Pezenas is a great town to visit, lots of things to do and see in town, and then almost unlimited excursions within reach of town. Apartment is up two flights of stairs, in an old charming building. Apartment is spacious and comfortable. There is a nice produce store across the street, a fantastic bakery/pastry store a few buildings down, and you are a half block from the Saturday market and the old town. Owners are very kind and responsive. Our one major complaint is the night time noise - young kids racing their mopeds up and down the streets, loud conversations that easily penetrate the apartments windows and shutters. Sometimes the noises died down around 11 pm, but too many times it went on much longer. Some, or maybe much of this is a result of being in a city type neighborhood where there are many people nearby, including kids, who seem to have a very late bedtime. Some is due to being on a narrow stone road, that carries sound easily, and some is due to people just talking loudly, or calling to each other as they walk down the street, oblivious to the idea that their voices are carrying. I think if you live in a city or neighborhood where there is noise through the late evening and night, this may not be a problem for you, but we are used to quiet at night. We spent a week in Paris at the end of our trip, in a hotel on a very busy, noisy street, but it was absolutely quiet in the room. I'm guessing the windows were double or triple glazed.
Thank you very much for your review Dennis! We were so glad to know that you loved our apartment, building and Pezenas. We are always so excited to share our wonderful "quartier" with travellers.
When you stay at "Les Appartments des Artistes" (HomeAway #979853 and #4274763), you are right in the heart of this thriving market village. The moment you step outside of the front door of the building, you are in the middle of an area that has been teaming with commerce and restaurants for over 200 years. There is a rhythm to the day. Directly in front of our building is Danielle, owner of "Aux Quatre Saisons". Her small shop, which she took over from her father opens out into the streets with delicious fresh produce. Down to the right is Frankie and Eugenie, our neighbourhood boulangerie. "La Sca'pin" opens at 6 am, filling the air with the smell of fresh baguettes and "chocolatines". We are regular customers at "Coiffeurs Kadar". These gentlemen are not only great barbers, but are mentors and leaders to the local kids. Did we forget to mention the SPAR grocery store just below the apartments? These are our friends and neighbours. When you live in the middle of all this, you get a unique perspective of village life in France. You gain insight that perhaps other vacation rentals cannot offer you.
If you open your window, you will see the French greet each other, go about their day, and love.
You can look out the window from our apartments and be witness to all this. We always feel so lucky, that we can have these glimpses into this culture. Not everyone is receptive to this, and we at "Les Appartements des Artistes" have worked to ensure their comfort.
Every window in each of our apartments was long ago replaced with double paned glass. This not only insulates from the heat, but noise. Each window also has wooden shutters. We have found that if we close the windows and shutters we can have a peaceful sleep.
We have always advertised that we offer affordable family friendly apartments in the heart of Pezenas. We are confident that you will fall in love with our neighbours as we have. We pride ourselves on customer service, and encourage you to read the over 50+ 5 star reviews we have garnered over the years. If you are coming to the south of France, we would be so pleased to host you and your family; and share with you this amazing piece of France.
Home away from home.
This apartment was just perfect for our family of four. It's comfortable, decorated tastefuly and the kitchen is fully equiped. The town itself is spectacular. Plenty to see and the area is perfect for holidays as there are so many things to see and do nearby. We go every year and it just keeps getting better the more time we spend there. We always go back to this apartment. The hosts are very friendly and helpful. Highly recomended!
Thank you Dan,
It's true, Dan's family of 4 have stayed with us three times now. "L'Appartement des Artistes" has become their home away from home in France.

'Home from Home'
Just returned from a wonderful stay at this beautiful apartment which was very well equipped with everything required for our stay. The Apartment itself was very characterful and very conveniently situated 2 mins from the main square. Pezenus itself was beautiful. Lots of quaint streets and houses, lovely restaurants and a lovely Saturday morning market. David and Holly were very welcoming and particularly helpful during our stay in providing lots of tips for various places to visit. Would not hesitate recommending to family and friends and hopefully will return to Pezenas in the future.
We would love to welcome you back again Liza!

The 2010 Rough Guide to Languedoc Roussillon calls Pézenas, “One of the most singularly beautiful towns in the French Southwest, endowed with an almost overwhelming concentration of grand architecture”. Thanks to Armand de Bourbon, Prince of Conti, Pézenas was considered the “second Versailles” in the late 17th century. This drew wealth, artists and playwrights of the calibre of Moliere all seeking to gain favor and patronage from the court.
Today Pézenas has an incredibly well preserved Old Town filled with outdoor restaurants, artisans, and entertainment. Seasonal festivals, celebrations and a huge Saturday market take place year-round in Pézenas and it’s neighboring villages. Located in the middle of the largest wine growing region in all of France, and less than a half hour drive from the Mediterranean beaches. Simple pleasures are abound.
With so many things to see and do in the Languedoc-Roussilon, Pézenas is ideally situated. The town of Pézenas itself is beautiful and vibrant. From buying bread and tasty treats at the local boulangerie, to people watching at a one of the town’s outdoor cafés, or exploring one of the many antique shops (Brocantes), Pézenas has so much to offer. The Old Town is rich with history and fine architecture, and full of unique artisan shops and fine restaurants. What’s more, Pézenas has one of the best year-round Saturday Markets (Bio Marché) in the area. All of this and more is steps away from 'L’Appartement des Artistes'.
Some of the finest beaches in Southern France are a short drive away, but there is so much more to this area than sun and sand. Incredible sites like Le Pont de Gard, the medeval ramparts of Carcassone, or visiting cities like Montpellier, Narbonne, Beziers, Nimes and Arles. These all make wonderful day-trips from Pézenas. There are truly so many things to see and do, you will need more than a week just to scratch the surface of this enchanting region.
