Eight Agree, Once Is Enough

  • 3 of 5

Burt Lake is a beautiful lake but next time we will be looking for another house. The owners clearly take pride in their decorating but the house smelled very musty and some of the windows did not open and close properly. We could not use the dresser drawers as they smelled of mildew and the shower curtain needed laundering to remove thigh high orange mold. They boasted a gourmet kitchen which was missing basic necessities like a basting brush for grilling. The living room furniture was pretty, but very uncomfortable...which might have been on purpose as we were greeted with house rules posted everywhere including don't eat anywhere but at the table and don't sleep on the sofas. In spite of being respectful renters, we felt followed by the proverbial wagging finger all week long. Oh yeah, forgot to mention the noise from construction on the next lot over and the run away toilet. On the positive, we enjoyed the hammock, kayaks and canoe, the beach area for fires, and the yard was large enough to set up our badminton set. The large size kitchen and table seating eight was perfect. The pie was also nice, but did not make up for the shortcomings we encountered.

Owner's Response: Was quite surprised to read this review, in light of the fact that you wrote a wonderful review in our guest book at the cottage. You also were kind enough to give us a nice bottle of wine as a thank you. We have had many wonderful families stay at our home and have always had very positive comments. The musty smell may have come from the fact that your family followed a week of heavy rain last summer. That being said, we are one of the few cottages in our area that have central air and all of the windows do open and close. Running the AC or opening a few windows would have been solutions to the damp smell you intimated. The drawers are wooden and we did not notice a smell but have since put cedar in them at your suggestion. The shower curtain was due to someone using hair color in the shower and has been replaced. The basting brush is in the cupboard with the grilling tools. We provide much more in the kitchen than most rentals as well as spices, oils, and baking supplies. We are surprised about the furniture complaint as many people have made positive comments about the furniture. Every house we have ever rented has had house rules and information. I put a few signs around for kids, etc that might forget to use coasters, etc. Remember we want to keep our home nice for everyone and not everyone in your party will read the house rules/info. The runaway toilet could have easily been fixed by calling us. We are sorry about the noise from our neighbor's construction, we have no control over their project which is now complete. Again we are very committed to having our guests have a pleasant experience and we go the extra mile to make your vacation a wonderful one. We have many returning guests as well. Thank you for your suggestions.

Beautiful, secluded, relaxing vacation home

  • 5 of 5

At the risk of sharing this "secret" called Burt Lake, I had to share our positive review of this home. Our group of 10 arrived to a welcome gift in the kitchen - cookies and pie - and all the wood stacked for a bonfire on the beach. What nice touches.

The home - inside and out - is just as pictured. One nice surprise, the common areas are wide open - the kitchen, living room, dining room and sunroom all flow together. The kitchen and bathrooms are updated and much nicer than a rental house needs to be. The bedrooms are small and comfortable. Two of the bedrooms are master suites, which is perfect for two families traveling together.

This home itself is in the perfect location. It is on a quiet dirt road, set back far from the road and close to the water. You hardly notice the neighboring houses due to the gorgeous, mature trees and each house has such a huge lot. The lake frontage is sandy, shallow and not weedy. The homeowners just added a mooring buoy so we were able to tie up our pontoon boat and fish every day. If you bring or rent a boat, the community boat launch is a very quick two-mile drive away.

Burt Lake is amazing! It is a huge lake with clear water, a sandy / shallow bottom, and hardly any boat traffic even when it is busy. During our visit we learned just how desirable the west side of the lake is - where this beautiful home sits. The water was as calm as glass for 6 of our 7 days. The breezes cool the house in the afternoons and evenings (of course there is air conditioning, but we didn't turn it on during our stay in August).

Although it would be easy to travel to other northern Michigan cities from this house, we appreciated how secluded and relaxed it was. We ventured out to Petoskey (25-30 minutes) for ice cream at the Bob-In Again, Pirates Cove putt-putt golf and last-minute groceries.

The owners were easy to work with during booking and very helpful when we forgot multiple items at checkout. Overall, we highly recommend the home and we can't wait to return!

This clean and well-maintained cottage was perfect for our family of 10--kids and grandkids on one end and grandparents on the other! Comfy beds, well-stocked kitchen, large washer and dryer, big dining room table, extra refrigerator in the garage, free Wi-Fi, the canoe and kayaks and the rope hammock were all things we enjoyed. The cottage is set on a quiet road and we made use of the 4 bikes in the garage to explore the woods behind us. We also loved the large seating area at the end of the dock and spent many happy hours sunbathing, reading, fishing and snacking there. The steps leading down from this area shown in the photos are no longer there, but this was not a problem. Firepit on the beach was great for making s'mores in the evening. The screened porch was a delightful surprise and our favorite gathering spot for coffee in the morning. The water is quite hard and not good for drinking, but the owners supplied extra water and jugs to be filled at the free artesian well in Alanson. Scott and Cynthia were very helpful with suggestions and answers to questions we had. They made us feel very welcome with fresh flowers in every room and a cherry pie on the kitchen counter when we arrived. We had a great week and would highly recommend this beautiful home to everyone.

Cottage on Burt Lake

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic time during our August week. The cottage was gorgeous and just like the pictures. The layout was conducive for relaxing, sleeping, and eating. Plenty of room although we only had four it was much larger and could accommodate ten easily. The dock was beautiful to watch the sunset from. We used the fire ring once and it was very nice. The cottage was immaculate and well maintained. We treated it as if it were our own. The owner was very good in communication and we had no issues. We would recommend the property for others. Any store or restaurant is a bit of a drive but Douglas Lake Bar & Steakhouse was very nice and one of the closest to the cottage. Hoppies Tavern and Legs Inn are also interesting dinner locations. Burt Lake is a very peaceful place and the weather can fluctuate from swimming to sweaters in a matter of hours. A Mackinac Island day trip can be done easily from this location. Be sure to bring back some fudge for everyone to enjoy!
