About Donya Knudsen

My family has lived in Louisiana for about 300 years, dating back to the Cajun Expulsion. We have owned homes in New Orleans for over twenty years, raised our children here, become grandparents here, and truly love living in this wonderful city. We hope and believe that the next thousand generations of Causey’s and Knudsen’s will have a connection to this place that we cherish as it has become a journey both appreciated and worthwhile.

Donya Knudsen purchased this house in 1997

Why Donya Knudsen chose Faubourg Lafayette

I recall looking for weeks with nothing that really met my expectations. I wondered whether my home as I imagined it did not exist. I finally tried an agent that completely understood. She showed me one property and I knew the moment I walked in the door. My first home is now my guest house. May you feel much as I did at that first viewing many years ago.

What makes this house unique

This nineteenth century New Orleans home is ideally suited for families and friends who want to enjoy Mardi Gras, French Quarter Festival, Jazz Festival, Saints home games, weddings, and reunions while centrally and comfortably located at the edge of the Garden District. Easy access by streetcar to Audubon Zoo, Parks, Tulane and Loyola Universities, The Superdome, restaurants such as Commander's Palace, Delmonico, and the beautiful veranda at the Columns Hotel. The French Quarter and historic Marigny neighborhoods are only minutes away by streetcar or short taxi ride.

Inside you will find items from Pakistan, Greece, Spain, Indonesia, Korea, Nigeria, Honduras, Scotland, Florida, Texas, and Louisiana. You will find an extensive home library of good books including children’s books.

You will find places to be together as well as plenty of places where you can have privacy. All of the bedrooms are located upstairs including the master suite which enjoys its own bathroom. In addition to a more formal parlor, there is also sun room which is bright and cheerful. The kitchen is fully furnished with modern appliances, and there is a washer and dryer for your convenience. It is comfortable and unique home and we believe you will truly enjoy staying here.

This home has nineteen windows and twelve foot ceilings which give the house an airy comfortable feel. Throughout the home you will find original crown molding, ceiling medallions, and Venetian glass light fixtures. It has two sets of French doors in the sun room that lead out to a private courtyard shaded by a magnificent crepe myrtle, and surrounded by camellias.

This fully furnished home is ideally priced for groups of people requiring more than one room at peak celebration times in the city. The convenience of its location and the bonus associated with the privacy of a home makes this location ideal for groups or families wishing to have a unique experience living as a 'local' New Orleanian.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in your beautiful home!! We appreciated all the hard work that you have put into maintaining and decorating it. And we were very comfortable.

My father had a great time, getting to visit his old neighborhood and the family plot in the cemetery, plus the aquarium, zoo, and insectarium. Our best meal was at Mandinas, and we have several other fine meals.

Many thanks.

Frigid New Years Not Exactly Right Time for Visit

  • 3 of 5

The home was clean and welcoming on our arrival. It is convenient to the trolley and the many restaurants on St Charles and Magazine Streets. We made full use of the RTA system, visiting the French Quarter and museum district. We were seven adults and comfortable in the three bedrooms and garden room. When the outside temperatures sank into the 20's & 30's the garden room space heater was barley adequate for the space. Heat in the rest of the home was spotty, as well. The master bedroom was cold. To be honest, many of the restaurants and shopping also suffered from the cold temperatures. Hot water for showers ran out by the last bather. The shower in the master bathroom had very little pressure.

Just what we needed for our stay.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the review. This was a group of Geology graduate students in New Orleans for a national seminar on their various areas of interest. It appears that the house worked well for a large group with somewhat diverse interests ( there are many facets to the field of Geology) and had rented the house as individuals coming as a group as opposed to families or friends. This meant that the number of sleeping areas needed to accommodate single sleepers. I am pleased to hear that this worked for all. Just to let people know I have upgraded one of my televisions to a flat screen digital version. This now puts three of the five units in the house as media that meets the modern era. One of the review comments from several years back (conveyed to me privately) was that it would be worth the effort to upgrade the audio visual equipment in the house. I added this to my list of improvements for the future and have made some progress towards replacing all TV's that are not from this century. As an aside to this story, the need to buy a new TV was driven by the demise of a 26" RCA floor standing color TV. This was one of the first items my husband and I bought when we moved to NOLA. It has like our marriage lasted twenty five years. Just sharing. Donya

Perfect House!

  • 5 of 5

It's elegant, rustic, original, old, new (appliances, gadgets), grill, garden, patio, birds, good for kids, quiet neighborhood, centrally located, 2 min walk from street car station.

Uber is cheap, as its located close to French Quarters. Yet its far enough to return home to some quiet time.

This was our first visit to New Orleans! All of us had a great time !

Thank you Temple/Donya for being such kind hosts!

Lovely home for our New Orleans stay

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed staying in this lovely older home in New Orleans. It was a short 2 block walk to the St. Charles trolley . Very conveniently located. The owners were very accommodating in getting us additional tables for our large family early Thanksgiving. The additional blow up airbeds were a plus for the 4 small grandkids. It was convenient having a clothes washer/dryer off the kitchen for our use.

Great location in a great city!

  • 5 of 5

The house was very large and spacious for our family of six. We had an extra guest for the weekend but there was no problem fitting her into the house. We loved being near the trolley so that we could come and go without the hassle of parking our car downtown. There are many good restaurants in walking distance. If you enjoy walking, you don't even have to use the trolley. Our kids walked to the French Quarter to enjoy the many shops and tourist attractions there. Occasionally we did drive but upon our return we were always able to find a space to park near the house. The. neighborhood was very quiet. We always felt safe during both day and night. The owners have provided many extras to make the stay pleasant. I would recommend this home to any that are looking to enjoy NOLA!

Owner's Response: Y'all were some of the first July guests I have ever had. The house had just completed its annual spring clean and maintenance and the week was one of the warmest on record. The HVAC was certainly going to have to perform well. It appears that it did. I am aware that a yearly family vacation is one of your interests. What a wonderful thing. I am very pleased that the home you chose was one that made your yearly travel something to remember. Regards, Donya

Located off of St. Charles and Jackson Avenues within walking distance of the street car line; fine and casual dining; jovial drinking establishments; Magazine Street antique shopping; and the Mardi Gras Parade routes. The French Quarter is two miles distant and accessible via the street car that passes several times an hour. The Fair Grounds where the annual Jazz Festival is celebrated is a fifteen minute ride by car or bicycle and additionally accessible by public transport for the more adventurous. The beauty of Audubon and City Parks with access to walking, picknicking, golfing, tennis, and museums is also only a fifteen minute drive by auto. The house is a two story, fully furnished, 1897 side hall victorian with a private patio area in the back. It comfortably sleeps four couples. You will be ideally positioned to fully enjoy New Orleans in the same way that people who live in this wonderful place do.
