For a house built back in 1870, I was impressed how well it has been maintained. The owners have added all modern conveniences and each room is nicely decorated with paintings, etc. The kitchen has all needed utensils, plates, cups, glasses and spices which is a real plus since Bucchan does not overflow with places to eat (especially on a Sunday evening). The beds were comfortable as well as the furniture. I found everything to my liking and highly recommend it.
For the fourth year in a row, my group of cyclist passed a wonderful week in Buchanan. See you next year!
My family was very comfortable at the James River House. Everyone said the beds were great. The kids loved the dungeon (basement). I loved all the cool boating and camping magazines. Everyone agreed that we would love to come back. Thanks for having us.
We had an amazing time! Beautiful house and comfortable beds! It was a great place to spend Thanksgiving with friends!
this house had all the charm and character of an old house including nicely sized bedrooms, front porch, wood floors, interesting architecture. there were plenty of towels for everyone, coffee for the coffeepot and enough sheets and pillows for all the beds. parking was literally at the front door, or behind the house right outside the fenced in back yard area. the "dormitory" area downstairs was perfect for our young adults and having a bathroom in all the bedrooms made it so easy to accommodate 14 people. sometimes we would have to wait for the hot water heater to kick in if multiple people were trying to shower at the same time - water went from warm to cold pretty quickly. again, one of the interesting qualities of an old home. i would highly recommend this house for larger groups or families with teenage and older children. john mays was easy to work with and responded to questions quickly.
This is a beautiful, historic home in a quiet town with plenty of room for all 11 of us! The huge dining room table was perfect for family meals and we loved sitting on the balcony and front porch in the evenings. The rooms were all well appointed and nicely decorated. We loved the close proximity to the Twin River Outfitters, the Roanoke Bagel Company next door, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Monticello, and Roanoke. It was the perfect location for all of our day trips. The townspeople and shop owners were all so friendly! The owners were very nice and quick to respond to all of our questions and needs. I would highly recommend the James River House!
