In the fall of 2017 our family had the very good fortune to be able to stay at Villa Le Caggiole in Montepulciano. It was a holiday that is made of dreams. We were anticipating a wonderful trip but when we arrived the charm and the beauty of the Villa far exceeded our expectations. The beauty of the surroundings was only surpassed by the graciousness and generosity of our wonderful host Francesca Lucci.
We are a multi generational family and were lucky to stay for a week, but we felt we could have stayed forever. Our twenty-something boys swam in the outdoor pool and rented bicycles to tour the amazing countryside. There were many evenings of family games of Bocce on the front lawn. My husband has a prosthetic leg and can struggle with getting around easily, the villa was very suited to his needs and Francesca made sure that we had everything we needed and shared wonderful recommendations of nearby towns to visit.
In addition to those wonderful day trips (Sienna, Pienza, and several others) we all enjoyed our daily trips to the town of Montepulciano to delight in the generosity and hospitality of the local shop keepers.
Francesca was so attentive and so incredibly generous that we formed what I hope to be a lifelong friendship. Her knowledge and recommendations for our daily trips to the beautiful surrounding villages helped us so much to enjoy this incredible vacation.
There were so many amazing aspects of Villa Le Caggiole itself; the lavender and rosemary gardens, the vineyards and the wine produced there, and the terrace overlooking the countryside just to list a few.
We live in the heart of the beautiful Finger Lakes in upstate New York, and have been fortunate to travel to many beautiful places in the world, but our trip to Tuscany stands out by far. It is a trip that we will never forget as a family and hope to have the good fortune to be able to visit again in the fall of 2019.
A Sublime Paradise in the Heart of Tuscany
Perfectly situated with a large terrace overlooking the magnificent Tuscan countryside, Villa Le Caggiole is a stunning villa managed by Francesca, the most charming of hosts. We were a group of women (later joined by our partners) looking for a special vacation. The location could not be a better home base for day trips to not only well-known destinations like Siena and Florence, but also to nearby picturesque hilltop villages for long lunches and staggeringly beautiful photo opportunities.
The spotless, completely equipped villa has a historic relaxed elegance, with generous bedrooms and gathering spaces for large parties to spread out. Early morning walks, coffee by the beautiful pool, aperitifs on the huge terrace decorated with summer flowers quickly became routine. Best of all, Francesca was a perfect host, respectful of our privacy but quick to answer questions, offer suggestions, advice and guidance.
I could not imagine a better place to relax and call home away from home, and do not hesitate to recommend it to friends and family. This property deserves 10 stars!!
A fantastic spot in Tuscany.
We had a fantastic vacation in Montepulciano. The house is incredible with a spectaculaire vore and Francesca is the best hostess you could wish for. Our best recommendation.
We had a wonderful stay at Villa Le Caggiole and would recommend it to anyone intending to visit this part of Italy. Situated near the beautiful hilltop town of Montepulciano the Villa itself was perfect for our group of 8 and the photos do not do justice to the beauty of the views and the Villa itself. The hosts, Francesca and Jim, were so gracious and provided some great recommendations and we would suggest that anyone who stays at the villa ask Francesca to arrange for a local cook to prepare and cook food for them for the evening, which was a real highlight. The location was perfect for us to explore this part of Tuscany, which includes the wonderful towns of Montepulciano, Montalcino and nearby Siena. Grazie Francesca and Jim. We cannot wait to visit again.
Villa La Caggiole exceeded our every expectation and we hope to return soon. Francesca and Jim were gracious and welcoming hosts, who made us feel completely at home during our time there - it felt like we were staying at a friend's guest house rather than a property managed by total strangers. We have stayed in many vacation properties rented on VRBO and similar sites in Europe and the US, and have generally had very positive experiences, but Villa La Caggiole is incomparably the best we've encountered and the first we've reviewed.
The Villa is spacious and elegantly appointed, but homey and comfortable at the same time. We were a party of four adults and one toddler, so we barely used half the house and it could have easily supported a party several times our size. The rooms are all tastefully decorated, the bathrooms are modern and clean, and the kitchen is perfectly provisioned - it was a joy to cook there during our stay.
The Villa and its grounds are immaculately maintained - Francesca diligently cleans the pool daily and the landscaping was thriving despite the summer heat: it was never less than 100 degrees during our stay, so we were very glad of the pool and the natural air conditioning afforded by the house's insulating stonework and high perch above the surrounding vineyards. We ate every day on the Villa's terrace with its breathtaking views overlooking the Val di Chiana towards Arezzo, Cortona and the Central Apennine Mountains - it was easy to loose your sense of time drinking in the scenery.
The Villa is conveniently located just off the main road between Montepulciano proper and Montepulciano Stazzione in the valley, but it is tucked in a secluded grove at the end of a long driveway, so privacy and road noise were never an issue. Conveniently across the street is Locanda Cicolina, a quiet, family-run restaurant that serves traditional Tuscan cuisine done to perfection - we ate on their patio overlooking the family's vineyards several times and were never disappointed.
As a base for exploring eastern and southern Tuscany and western Umbria, we could not recommend a better option than Villa La Caggiole. Montepulciano itself is less than 2 miles away, while Pienza, Montalcino, Siena, Arezzo, Cortona, Lake Trasimene, Perugia, Orvieto and much more are all within 60 minutes by car. We cannot wait to return and explore more!
Montepulciano's position in southern Tuscany is an ideal base for excursions to the major artistic, cultural and recreational resources in Tuscany, Umbria and Northern Latium. Nearby can be found sport/athletic facilities (stables, tennis, golf, hiking), spas and health centres (Chianciano, S. Albino, Bagni S. Filippo, Bagno Vignoni) and some of the best eno-culinary touring in Italy (wine, cheese, local products, restaurants).
