Come and enjoy the long warm evenings under the pergola running along our 19th century country house and taste the wine from our characteristic cellar. You can relax in the long garden which slopes down to an ancient Franciscan monastery still in use. You may have your meals either inside the house or outside in the garden. The accommodation to rent consists of one flat on the ground floor and two other bedrooms each with its own bathroom on the first and second floors. These can be rented together or just in part. The owners, one of whom is English, also live in the house and are happy to advise and help their guests in any way.
What to do: We are placed in a convenient position as we are near many cities of artistic interest (Milan, Como, Monza and the beautiful medieval walled city, Bergamo). For those who enjoy hiking there are many good walks (On Montevecchia, at Sartirana, along the River Adda and in the Alps). For those who enjoy sight-seeing it is possible to visit the attractive lakeside villages. If you would like to know a very romantic story (The Betrothed by Alessandro Manzoni), which describes our area, we will explain it to you.
We will be very pleased to give you any tourist information you require and take you on our guided tours.
The accommodation consists of a ground floor flat (70 square metres large) in which there is a double bedroom, a bathroom with shower and window, a fully equipped kitchen and a living room with french windows opening onto the garden. In the kitchen there is a microwave, an oven, a fridge, a gas cooker and cupboards containing saucepans, plates and cutlery. The table in the living room is suitable for 6 maximum 8 people to eat. In this room there is a television.
On the first floor we have a double bedroom with a private bathroom with a window and shower.
On the second floor there is another very large double bedroom, again with shower and window. From the window in this room one can see Milan Cathedral in the distance on clear days. These two bedrooms of the first and second floors can be reached by an internal staircase running us the center of the house.
It is possible to rent either the ground floor flat on its own or with one or both of the other bedrooms.
In the garden there is an enclosed car park. For the children we have a children's house and a sand pit. The garden is fenced in and so it is safe for children.
Italian conversation: If you wish to improve your Italian we shall be happy to help you.
We can let you taste the vegetables grown in our garden by Andrea and our grandchildren.
Hello, we are Andrea and Felicity!! We enjoy meeting people from other countries and like showing them the beautiful places around us. We have had visitors from many parts of the world and as we speak five languages we have been able to spend much pleasant time in their company. The languages we speak are: Italian, English, German, French and Chinese.
Our guests often return as they have become our friends.
Andrea enjoys organizing events in the town and has been an ambulance volunteer for almost 30 years. Felicity likes singing in the choir and playing the piano. They both like walking in the mountains and visiting the historical sites nearby.
Felicity Ashton purchased this apartment in 1974
We bought this house above all because of its beautiful position. It is on a hill overlooking a Franciscan monastery and from the top windows we have a wonderful view of the plain . We can even see the Milan cathedral on good days. The house has a strong personality as it is 200 years old.
Our home is unique in that permits privacy as the bedrooms are on three different floors, but on the other hand it provides comunal spaces where people can enjoy each other's company, for example in the garden or at the table under the gazebo. Children can play in a safe area while adults can relax drinking wine from the cellar or reading under a tree. The thick walls of the house guarantee cool air in the summer so air conditioning isn't necessary. Its proximity to a little village with a beautiful lake and to the old market town Merate makes shopping convenient. Several restaurants are within walking distance and three churches are also nearby.
Samantha and Matthew were perfect guests.they were always very good company and were very appreciative of any suggestions we made. They were only with us for a few days but we really enjoyed having such easy and pleasant guests. They left the apartment in very good condition
Our company of 7 adults and 3 children (2, 4 and 6 years old) were lucky to spend a few days in this wonderful place in Merate in the middle of July 2016. Everything in Palazzetto is according to the apartments description (see www.beb-palazzetto.com too). The bedrooms are spacious and have private bathrooms; the kitchen has everything you need; there is a comfortable spacious gazebo in the garden and parking place for 3 cars.
The Palazzetto owners Felicity and Andrea are very friendly and helpfull hosts, they know a lot about places around and they are happy to tell you about sights which should be visited.
We highly recommend this place and these wonderful people.
Felicity and Andrea, thank you very much from Belarus!
My friend and I had never traveled to northern Italy before, and got extremely lucky to have found this place online. Our expectations were far surpassed by the experience we had, and I only have great things to say. We arrived in the middle of August, and our experience began by Felicity and Andrea offering to pick us up from my hotel about 15 miles away. Not only did they pick us up and take us back to their house, but they immediately offered some suggestions on where to go to dinner that evening (a wonderful pizza place about a ten minute walk from there). They also gave us suggestion after suggestion on everything from where to go for a nice day trip to where to find the best lunch place in Bergamo.
The apartment we rented from Andrea and Felicity was perfect for our needs. It had a small kitchen which allowed us to buy things and cook in, when we didn't want to go out. The doors opened up to a grape vine canopy with a beautiful view of the garden. The train station was a 20-25 minute walk, but it was doable. We stayed for 4 days, and at the end of the stay, they graciously drove us all the way to Milan to catch our flights.
I highly recommend this place, for both the beautiful countryside charm and the warm and welcoming wonderful people who own the place.
We had a wonderful experience, and hope you will too!
We were there in August 2014, 7 persons- 5 adults and 2 children. Owners are very friendly and helpfull, they know a lot about places worth to see Palazzetto is a cosy, peacefull place , good for your Lake Como visiting. Good price, good place.
We have recently returned from an extended stay in Italy, and Felicity and Andrea could not have been better hosts. From the very beginning they were so gracious--picking us up with no complaint from the Merate train station HOURS after our expected arrival time late at night due to a flight "glitch." They were very attentive to our every need, stopping in once a day to check in without being intrusive. They explained the layout of Merate, suggested activities, and informed us of scheduled events and things to see near Merate.
We stayed with them for 3 weeks because my husband and I wanted to give our children an immersive experience in Italy--exposure to the language, culture, history, etc. And that is exactly what we got. We practiced our Italian with Andrea and Felicity. They took us on a few outings. We cooked with them. Ate with them. Our children played with their grandchildren--our children's favorite part of the trip! The property has a great yard, where they spent many hours playing. Wonderful time!
A small market and bakery are about a 10 minute walk away. The larger grocery store is more like a 15 to 20 minute walk, if I remember correctly. The walk to the train station can take as little as 20 minutes if you push it, but with 3 kids, it took us more like half an hour. The people in Merate were in general very eager to try and understand and help us with our limited Italian. All in all a great experience.
Thank you Felicity and Andrea for a wonderful stay!
Our family with 2 children aged 16 and12, have just returned from a fabulous holiday at Palazzetto, Merate. Felicity and Andrea were the perfect hosts, making us feel welcome from arrival to departure, leading up to our stay the communication was great too. They checked on us daily and gave us lots of tips about where to go, nothing was too much for them. During our stay they took us along the River Adda and told us the Love story linked to the area, showed us the works of Leonardo da Vinci, also the story of the donkey, all very interesting. The house itself is very traditional and has a lot of history having been built in 1880's, again our hosts were happy to tell us the history of the building and the area which are fascinating. The accommodation is clean, comfortable and felt like home. There's a pretty garden with dining area, grape vine, parking and even a washing line. Merate is a lovely place and a great base for seeing the surrounding area. There is a restaurant 10 minutes walk away called Tre that serves delicious pizzas, we had takeaway a couple of times which was around €20. To eat in was a little more expensive and there was a range of other Italian specialities on the menu. There are several supermarkets close by for supplies, as well as outdoor swimming in Imbersago and Cisano from €7-€8 per adult, cheaper for children and cheaper still if you go after 2 p.m. Imbersago is more for older children and Cisano for younger, we spent a few days at the pool in Imbersago, it has lovely views of the river Adda. During our stay we hired a car which I would say is essential if you want to see the sights. We travelled to many places including a market at Pasturo. Montevecchia, Brivio, Madonna del Bosco and Lake Satirana which are all very close by. Also, beaches/shops at Mandello del Lario, Varenna, Dervio, Bellano and Colico. Colico being at the top part of the lake and taking a maximum of 1 hour 15 minutes to drive to from Palazzetto. All of these were on the right side of Lake Lecco/Como as you look at the map. Lecco itself is a very pretty place, only a 20 minute drive from Palazzetto with some amazing views, shops and restaurants. We packed a lot into our 12 day stay, and would definitely return as there is still so much more to see and do. There is a website www.BEB-Palazzetto.com with photos and lots more info. Italy is a beautiful country particularly Northern Italy, the views are spectacular and lifestyle spot on!
We had a very warm reception by Felicity and Andrea. The rental is as described, with an apartment on the ground level where we stayed, with small but adequate kitchen, and a bedroom/bathroom on the floor above where our two boys stayed. The furnishings are modest, but the unit was clean. Felicity and Andrea were very responsive, checking in on us, going out of there way to provide recommendations (e.g. tips for traveling into Milan or Bergamo) as well as accommodating the needs of our boys (Andrea removed the bolt to their bedroom so they couldn't accidentally lock themselves in).
Good value for the money, considering the cost of accommodations in Milan, and excellent communication leading up to our stay.
Merate is situated in the first hills above the Padana plain just below the Alps and near Milan and Lake Como. It is near the River Adda famous for the hydraulic projects designed by Leonardo da Vinci. Walks in parks and the mountains.Sightseeing on Lake Como. Easy to reach Formula 1 racing track, as well as interesting cities such as Milan, Bergamo, Lecco, Como and Monza. 30 minutes by car or by train.
We can provide tourist information and guided tours if required.
The place is suitable both for those who love nature and for those who wish to visit art cities. There are several Romanesque churches. It is possible to go for walks away from the traffic, both for families with children as well as trekkers. There are several nature parks in the area, where if you are lucky you can see unusual flora and fauna. Ideal for bird-watching as well as experts in photography.
For those who love the mountains there are places which can be reached within half an hour, where you can walk up to mountain huts and enjoy a typical meal for mountaineers, at a very reasonable price. As we also love the mountains, we can suggest the best places to visit, according to weather you have children or other interests.
Lake Como is also 30 minutes away and in the summer there are several beaches where one can swim in safety. On the lake there are also ferries where you can admire the landscape for a different point of view. All around the lake there are beautiful villas many of which are famous, such as Villa Balbianello used in the film Starwars. If George Clooney has decided to come to live here for the beauty of the place, why not trust his judgement and come and visit the lake too? You might have the chance to drink a cup of coffee with him!!
The climate is usually pleasant, never too warm or too rainy, as the presence of the lakes makes the weather quite mild.
The proximity of Milan offers many opportunities, above all as regards fashion and shopping. Booking in advance one can see Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper. For football fans San Siro can easily be reached. Rho Fair can easily be reached by train as well as by car. The underground takes you directly into the fair, so you wouldn't get lost. Trains in Italy are cheap and practical, so it is easy to move about at a reasonable price.
The beautiful medieval walled city of Bergamo is close by. The square in the old city is considered to be the most beautiful in Italy. The walls surround the old city which can be reached by funicular.
The nearist town on the lake is Lecco, famous for being the scene of Alessandro Manzoni famous novel 'The betrothed' (I promessi sposi). Apart from Formula 1, Monza also possesses the evocative Iron Crown, in which is enclosed one of the nails from the Holy Cross. It was used to crown Charlemagne and Napoleon. It can be seen without having to book.
Other Activities: sight-seeing, trekking, art, theme park for children.
