About Claire Lighting

Cupid's arrow struck when we arrived in Biarritz in 2001. We never planned to live in France but events seemed to be Divinely planned and so it was that we came to the Bearn and found a delightful home in the magnificent countryside. When my Uncle died he left his house in England to me and my sisters and being real Francophiles we decided to sell in UK and buy a house for our family to enjoy holidays in the sun in France. Villa Veronique was the result and we renovated this delightful house to a very high standard. In 2015 we bought a new roof for the main house and garage and installed blown fibre loft insulation making the house very cosy in Winter. I like people to feel welcome and at home in the house because it contributes to its already calm atmosphere.

Claire Lighting purchased this villa in 2006

Why Claire Lighting chose Bearn - Orthez

Quality construction and built by a local builder and gifted as a wedding present to his beloved daughter and her new husband. The house has seen families grow up and has a gentle, maternal atmosphere. You are guaranteed to sleep well on the comfortable beds and as a family we have supplied everything we think you need to be comfortable during your stay. Outside there is a one acre garden laid to lawn on river rock, with speciality shrubs and fruit trees. Book in October and you can leave with kilos of delicious walnuts.

What makes this villa unique

In a world of ever moving technological advancement and so many living within inches of their smart phones and tablets. Our house is off the beaten track, it is animal friendly and my dogs love the countryside and the river. As a family we love the solitude and peace but also appreciate the activity in the tiny farming hamlet. The only sounds are various animals and the pleasant church bells. Cycling and swimming in the nearby river, the Gave d'Oleron allows families or individuals private space to become totally ZEN. Even in high season it is possible to stay for hours on the pebble river 'beach' and feel you have the entire world to yourself.

Thank you Claire and Andrew for contributing to one of our best Christmases ever! 'Villa Veronique', is lovely. Beautifully clean, everything we wanted provided for. The house was very warm, and deceptively spacious. My children loved the garden, plenty of places to play and the village and surrounding countryside offers clear air and a deeply peaceful atmosphere. We plan to return in the summer time now that we have discovered this treasure trove.

Lovely holiday house

  • 5 of 5

A lovely comfortable house in a beautiful, peaceful area. A great base to explore the mountains, coast and beautiful medieval towns. We loved the river which is only a short walk away and is great for swimming. It is an idyllic spot - we often had the local river beach to ourselves where we and our three boys spent many happy hours swimming and building piers and damns out of the stones. We also had a great time canoeing at Sorde L-Abbaye where they were very friendly and helpful. The owner, Andrew, who lives a few miles away, was very helpful and available if needed. All in all a very enjoyable stay! Jane, Mike and boys

Great holiday house

  • 5 of 5

Great, clean, spacious and fully equipped house. Our children really enjoyed the huge garden and the river wich is just a 10 minute walk away.

Lovely area, lots of markets during the summer in the surrounding villages.

So much to see, daytrips to spain, the sea, the mountains or just stay in the garden and enjoy the sun with a BBQ and some fine bottles of wine.

Perfect house to discover the most beautiful region of France.

Lovely property in a beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

The house was exactly as described. It was very clean and very well equipped with everything needed for a very comfortable stay. Andy was very helpful and friendly and made us feel very welcome. The area itself is beautiful and we did a lot of touring around to ensure we saw a much of the area as possible. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this property to friends.

Sauveterre de Bearn: 5 minutes drive by car to this old medieval town. Built originally as a walled refuge from the turbulent times of the Dark Ages, Sauveterre grew in importance as on one of the main routes to Spain, used by pilgrims going to Santiago del Compostella. There are restaurants in both Salies de Bearn and the outskirts of Sauveterre. Details given in our ‘house guide’. There are two supermarkets and petrol , 5 minutes from the villa outside Sauveterre town.

Ideal for cycling holidays - bikes on request.

Salies de Bearn is a popular spa town. The Thermal baths are a treat to experience, where the hot mineral waters are noted for being seven times more salty than the Dead Sea, with two pools, full facilities. Salies is known as the Venice of the Béarn because of the way the houses overhang the river on stilts, an unusual and charming architectural feature.

Other Activities: Canoe and Kayak, White Water Rafting

Golf: Salies de Bearn Golf Helios.
